NC Novice and Outreach Tournament- November 14 (online but in NC only)

Post by bkmcavoybickford »

What is this tournament?

This is a tournament meant for novice players and schools with limited quiz bowl experience in the state of North Carolina. It will occur on November 14, and be run online using the Discord platform. Students must have some ability to connect to Discord for the purposes of this event. Neither a microphone nor a video camera is necessary. It will be hosted on the MOQBA novice set. Please see viewtopic.php?f=109&t=23197 for more details about the set.

Please note that this tournament will occur for much of the day on November 14. We will have an introductory meeting at 9:00 a.m. Eastern time, and teams should be prepared to go until as late as 5:00 p.m., although we anticipate ending slightly earlier. There will be a lunch break at some point of roughly 45 minutes, and a closing ceremony after the tournament. The format of the tournament will be in preliminary and playoff brackets, or preliminary brackets and a crossover game, depending on the number of teams. This means that teams will be expected to play until the end of the tournament, even if they are not in contention for first place.

Are we eligible for this tournament?
If your team, or all the players on it, have never played a pyramidal tournament: Yes. “Pyramidal” is the name for the format of quiz bowl that this tournament uses, because the questions resemble a pyramid, where they start with the hardest clues and then progress to easier clues. Tournaments on NAQT questions, such as NCASA, are pyramidal. Brain Game is not pyramidal, and so teams that have played Brain Game but not NAQT are de facto eligible. History Bowl has a somewhat similar format to this tournament, but, because it mostly covers history, teams that have only played History Bowl are generally eligible.

If your team, or all the players on it, have only played NCASA tournaments or other tournaments that do not keep individual player statistics: Generally, teams that did not qualify for states are eligible. You should think about if entering your full team would make the tournament unfair to novices, particularly if your team came close to qualifying for states or qualified for another tournament. The NAQT webpage lets you see some statistics for your team. Schools may still enter a B or JV team to this tournament even if their normal A (top) team is not eligible- we will give it the A letter for this tournament, however.

If your team, or some of the players on it, have played tournaments that do keep statistics for individual players: If it was an HS tournament or MSNCT (middle school quiz bowl nationals), players who scored above 30 points per game or teams that made top bracket are not generally eligible. Players who have scored above 20 points per game on a tournament held on any set other than an NAQT A (easier) set in their second year of playing HS quizbowl are also not generally eligible.

Other criteria:
Players who transferred from a school that had a quiz bowl team should judge their eligibility on a case-by-case basis, including by looking at the individual player statistical recommendations.
Players who attended MSNCT or NHBB Nationals (middle school and history bowl national tournaments, respectively), should consider if they believe that their attendance at the tournament would overwhelm the field. Again, players who scored above 30 points per game at MSNCT are not generally eligible.

If you are uncertain of your team’s eligibility or believe that a player that these rules recommend to be ineligible should be eligible, please talk to us. I know these rules are long, but we’re doing this in order to ensure a fair environment for newer teams, where they can venture into quiz bowl without immediately having to face this state’s top teams.

Teams from states other than North Carolina are not eligible as of right now- we will let you know if we are able to expand this to let teams in from outside NC at some point.

How much will the tournament cost?

$10 per team. This tournament, because it is online and intended for novice teams, is not being hosted by a club. If this will be a problem for your team, please let us know and we can see what we can do to resolve the issue. Please pay to [email protected] through PayPal, although we can also work out alternatives if necessary.

What rules does this tournament use?

We will be using the NAQT rules (https://www.naqt.com/rules/) with a few modifications. No game clocks are being employed at this tournament. All rules referencing in-person settings and equipment should be understood to correspond to the online equivalent. Because this tournament is being hosted online and is intended for newer teams, the timing rules will be slightly different. 5 seconds instead of 2 seconds will be given for a player to answer a tossup. 5 seconds instead of 3 seconds will be given for players to buzz in after the end of a question. 8 seconds instead of 5 seconds will be given for teams to answer each bonus part.

Additionally, all players, coaches, advisors, parents, and staff must abide by the PACE Code of Conduct, http://www.pace-nsc.org/nsc-code-of-conduct/. We would like to have this tournament be a safe and welcoming environment for all quiz bowl players.

Teams may bring as many substitutes as they wish to, but all players must only play for one team over the course of the tournament- no player may switch from B to A at any point during the tournament. Teams of less than 4 people are also permitted.

How do we register?

Please e-mail [email protected] to register for this tournament, or if you have any questions. Schools may register more than one team.
