Vanderbilt ABC Fall - Online (10/31/2020)

Post by sharathun »

Vanderbilt University Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce this year’s Vanderbilt ABC (Academic Bowl Competition) Fall, a high school tournament to be held on October 31st, 2020. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this tournament will be conducted entirely online. The first round will begin promptly at 9 AM CST, and the tournament should finish by 5 PM CST.

Questions:
This tournament will be run using LONE STAR (Look Out, a New and Exciting Set of Texan Academic Rigor). This is a high school regular difficulty set. More information can be found https://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewt ... 09&t=24121.

Format:
The tournament will be conducted using Zoom. Rounds will consist of 20 tossups with three-part bonuses. There will be powers and negs, but no bounce back on bonuses. Teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets and playoff brackets will be determined based on preliminary record. All teams will be offered a minimum of 8 games, and statistics will be kept in full. Rounds will not be timed. Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated during the tournament. As the tournament is held online, players are highly encouraged to use a webcam that would be kept on during the matches to deter cheating.

Fees:
Since this tournament is being held online we will be offering a slight discount from our normal rate. The fee for the tournament are as follows:
$65 for the first team sent by a school
$60 for the second team sent by a school
$50 for all subsequent teams

Discounts:
We will offer a $15 discount for teams that provide an experienced moderator for the tournament.

Registration:
This tournament is open to any HS (including JV) teams; we may have a separate JV division if there are enough teams. Teams can register for this tournament by sending an email to [email protected]. Teams that register will also be provided and required to fill out a form that affirms compliance with Vanderbilt's Protection of Minors policy. When registering, please let us know how many teams and moderators you expect to bring. The field cap is set at 32 teams. The last day to register will be October 13, 2020.

Our mirror of the LONE STAR set will target teams from the Southeast US, south and east of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The editors of the LONE STAR set are planning on hosting their own online mirrors and granting mirrors targeting other areas. The details of their events should be released in the coming weeks, but any teams who may be unable to attend those events due to conflicts should feel free to contact us to register for our mirror.

You should probably be more explicit about how this affects teams in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington DC, Delaware, and Virginia. (Personally, I would define none of these states except Virginia as "Southeast", but they are all "south and east of the Ohio River").

The additional (currently unstated) geographic restriction is that teams from the DC area circuit and further north should play the DC area mirror that we will announce soon.

We have hit our field cap of 24, and have started a waitlist for teams that are interested in attending the tournament. As we are considering expanding the field, teams that are still interested in attending ABC Fall should send an email to [email protected] as soon as possible with the number of teams and moderators you are planning on bringing.

We have expanded the field cap from 24 to 32. Once again, teams that are interested in registering should send an email to [email protected]. If the field fills, we'll add you to the waitlist for in case teams drop out or are unable to attend, which is always a possibility.
