Cavalier Classic XXIII - 11/14 at UVA (Online)

Post by Arabidopsis failiana »

The Academic Competition Club at the University of Virginia will be hosting its annual fall tournament, the Cavalier Classic, on Saturday, November 14th, 2020 using NAQT IS-197. This tournament will be held online using Zoom.

All teams will be guaranteed 9 games. We will not be using computational math tossups or bonuses at this event.

Geographic restrictions: This tournament is open to teams located in Virginia, or within 200 miles driving distance of New Cabell Hall, Charlottesville, Virginia according to Google Maps. NAQT is encouraging hosts to favor local teams in order to maintain regional circuits.

Affiliation: The top 15% of the field will automatically qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, which is scheduled to take place at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and Hilton Atlanta in Georgia from May 28–30, 2021, which is Memorial Day weekend.

Team restrictions: Only 4 players can play at once, and there can be a maximum number of 6 players on each team’s roster, with substitutions possible at half-time and between games. If you wish to bring 7 or 8 players, we ask that you register a second team and so on for anyone with larger numbers of players.

All players must be enrolled at the same school; no chimera teams are permitted. If you have questions about eligibility, please send me an email.

Fee structure
Base fee: $60 per team
Staff discount: $15 for a competent moderator; $10 for a scorekeeper. The Academic Competition Club reserves the right to decide which moderators to accept for the discount.
Minimum fee: $0

Payment
We must receive your payment before the tournament starts, or you will not be able to play. Do not wait until the day of the tournament to pay; please plan to pay in advance. We can take payment by check, Venmo, or Zelle. On the registration form, you will be able to note which payment form you intend to use, and you will receive an email confirmation with details about how to pay. You can also request an invoice on the registration form.

The cap for this tournament is 32 teams; after this is reached, teams will be added to a waitlist. Until October 24th, only 4 teams from the same school will be allowed to register; additional teams will be added to the waitlist. After October 24th, these teams will be added to the field.

To officially register for this tournament, please fill out this form.

If your school has registered and would like to change any details of your registration, or if you have any questions concerning the tournament, please email me, Mark Bailey, at [email protected].

We hope to see you all online in November!

We will be starting the opening meeting at 9 am, with the first round beginning at 9:15. In order to start on time, all players should arrive by 8:50. I'll be sending out an information email in the week before the tournament so everyone knows what to expect.

Thank you to everyone for coming out to Cavalier Classic XXIII today. With zero prior tournament directing experience between us, we (Mark Bailey and I) worked super hard to prepare for and run this tournament.

Thank you to all of the outside staffers who made hosting a tournament of this size possible: Matt Weiner, Andrew Morin, Leo Chang, Ken Mitchell, Jackson Lamb, Jarrett Holmes, Elisa Steele, Kiera Spall, and Jeff Gordon. And of course, thank you to all the UVA Academic Competition Club members who staffed this tournament, including some first years without prior staffing experience. Thank you to the creators of TJ Electronic Scoresheets, which were especially useful for keeping tabs on room-by-room progress. Thank you to Nick, Alistair, and Karthik for teaching me how to use SQBS on the main Discord.

Most importantly, congratulations to the top teams:
In first place, Richard Montgomery B: Justin Posner, Gus Carvell, Urbar Kattel, and Kyle Liao
In second place, Maggie Walker: Quinn Kast, Sam Lichtman, Vien Nguyen, Arjun Azhagappan, and Dennis Plotikov
In third place, Richard Montgomery A: Abhinav Karthikeyan, Danesh Sivakumar, Amanda Wu, Alexander Pease, and Jaden Bandy
In fourth place, Centennial A: Anthony Duan, Hannah Fang, Anurag Sodhi, and Chris Wu

And congratulations to our top prelims individual scorers: Ean Casey (127.14 PPG), Lyra Gemmill-Nexon (113.57 PPG), Cavan Galbaldon O'Neill (107.14 PPG), Abhinav Karthikeyan (106.67 PPG), and Toby Goldberg (94.29 PPG).

Full stats can be found here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6553/

We used Zoom, and despite the fact that it required us (read: Mark) to manually assign every player between every round, it worked very well and most rooms finished nine rounds before 6 pm.

Feel free to give feedback or discuss this tournament by sending us an email or posting in this thread. Adapting to online quizbowl is certainly a challenge, and we’re definitely looking for ways to improve.

We will be hosting at least one high school tournament in the spring, so we hope to see many of you again then!
