IKEA HS Open Mirror

Post by entropy »

I'm excited to announce the IKEA HS Open Mirror, to be run over Discord on one of the dates specified in the poll above. IKEA is a college-level set written by Columbia and Georgia Tech that is designed to be harder than EFT but easier than ACF Regionals and will approximate the difficulty of 2016 Terrapin. More information about IKEA can be found here.

This tournament will use the ACF Ruleset, with the following modifications:
  • Tossups will have 15-point powers.
  • Moderators may choose to allow players or teams to use more than five seconds to answer after tossups or bonuses are fully read.
  • If a player's answer on a tossup is ruled incorrect, but they protest successfully that their answer should have been prompted, the tossup will be thrown out and a new tossup will be read to both teams.
This tournament will be directed by myself, Bo Chi, Pratyush Jaishanker, and Freddie O'Hara.

This tournament will be open to all high schoolers. Additionally, players from the HS class of 2020 who are not enrolled in a college or university may also play in this tournament, hopefully giving old teams a chance to play together again. Teams comprised of students who all attend one high school and/or class of 2020 graduates of that high school count as "closed," while all other teams count as "open."

Both closed and open teams may register for this tournament, and individuals may register as free agents. We will facilitate team formation among free agents if needed and balance open or free agent teams we feel too strong. The tentative field cap is 12 teams; we will expand if there is more interest and more staffers are available. If you are interested in playing or staffing this tournament, please add yourself to this spreadsheet. Note than a spreadsheet entry does not constitute official registration; official registration will be opened after a date is selected, and we will prioritize preexisting spreadsheet entries for official registration.

The fee to play this tournament is $75 for closed teams and $90 for open teams; we strongly encourage schools who have enough people to play as a closed team to do so. Staffers will be paid $25 for the full day.

Cheating and misconduct will not be tolerated at this tournament; we reserve the right to remove anyone suspected of cheating or misconduct from the tournament. If you feel unsafe at this tournament please feel free to reach out to a TD or staffer and to fill out the quizbowl misconduct form.

Yes, schools can sign up multiple teams, as long as every player on each team stays on that team and doesn't change teams throughout the day.

We'll close the date poll at the start of October 1. At that time we'll settle upon the date that has the most votes in the poll and works best with our staffer pool.

With the tournament now ten days away, we'd like for all teams interested in finalizing their registrations to email me at entropy15360 [at] gmail [dot] com with their team's name, roster, contact info [email address, phone number, Discord tag], and their preferred method of payment. If possible, we ask that teams pay us before the tournament starts; Zelle and PayPal work best for us. Teams and free agents listed on the signup spreadsheet should have received an email from me asking them to finalize their registration.

We need staff for this tournament! Please reach out to me if you're interested in staffing. Staffers who are only available to scorekeep or only available for part of the day are more than welcome; we appreciate any help!

Confirmed Teams [12] Waitlist [1]
  • IMSA B
Confirmed Free Agents [1]
  • Jason Xu
Since the field cap has been reached, we will be unable to form a free agent team.

Due to staffing constraints, we've capped the field at 12 teams. If you want to staff or know anyone who can please reach out as soon as possible!

This tournament happened.

Congratulations to "https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQnVmU ... sHFsvW2jIA" for winning the tournament! They went 7-1, and agreed with second-place team University Lab not to hold a final. Full stats, including category stats, are available here.

This tournament would not have been possible without the help of co-TDs Bo Chi, Pratyush Jaishanker, and Freddie O'Hara, as well as all the staff who helped read and scorekeep. Thank you so much everyone, and I hope to work with you again!

I hope everyone enjoyed playing the IKEA set! You may join the discussion forum by heading to your user control panel.
