2020 NAQT HSNCT: CANCELED

Post by Important Bird Area »

Edit: this tournament has been canceled. Please read our statement about public health and the cancellation of the 2020 HSNCT.
naqt.com wrote:NAQT is pleased to announce that its 2020 High School National Championship Tournament will be held at the Atlanta Hilton and Atlanta Marriott Marquis hotels in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 22-24, 2020. This is Memorial Day weekend. The Marriott Marquis is the same hotel that hosted the 2017, 2018, and 2019 HSNCTs.

NAQT is delighted that LetterOne is returning as the presenting sponsor of our HSNCT.

The field is limited to 320 teams. NAQT may expand the field depending on the level of interest and the availability of facilities and staff.

Was the inclusion of Monday in the dates intentional?

I believe that this is the 4th year in a row that HSNCT will be held in Atlanta. I thought the plan was to rotate every 3 years between Atlanta and Chicago. Why is HSNCT 2020 being held in Atlanta?

Long journey from Michigan.

I'm not aware of any such plan.

We wrote a bit about our site-selection criteria here.

One of the criteria that jumps out is

Variety among championship sites. Ideally, we would avoid excessive repetition so that frequent attendees can see a variety of cities.

4 years in a row. Should we assume that HSNCT will always be held in Atlanta?

I wouldn't.

As a point of comparison, the HSNCT was once in the Chicago area for six consecutive years (2005–2010, inclusive).

Note that while that is a selection criterion, it is one of eleven criteria listed, and indeed is somewhat in conflict with the criterion listed directly after it. It's pretty unlikely that any given site will get high marks on every single criterion, and some criteria will naturally have a higher priority than others.

Are there any tentative estimates for field size?

Not really—very few qualifying events have occurred yet (off the top of my head, I think only one). We expect to be able to accommodate similar or somewhat higher numbers of teams as in the past, but the actual final field size probably won't be known until May 2020.

Not at the present time. When we have more information, we'll post here.

naqt.com wrote:NAQT regrets to inform the quiz bowl community of the cancellation of the 2020 High School National Championship Tournament, which had been scheduled to take place May 22-24, 2020 at the Hilton Atlanta and Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

We know this decision is disappointing to everyone who was looking forward to competing at the 2020 HSNCT. We hope the quiz bowl community stays safe and healthy, and we look forward to seeing all of you at future NAQT events.
