Triton Pre-Nats @ UCSD (5/18)

Post by Arras Agility »

The UCSD Quizbowl team will host Triton Prenats, to be held at UCSD on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

The tournament will be run on Florida Spring. This is an open tournament, so college teams, high school teams, chimera teams, and college alumni are all allowed to play.

A team formation spreadsheet is available for free agents.

Pricing:
Any new schools (a school that did not play a tournament in the 2017-2018 season) will pay a flat $40 per team. Returning schools and open teams will pay $100 for each team.

Teams of more than 6 players will not be accepted for both new and returning teams.

Discounts:
- $5 per working buzzer system (must accommodate at least eight players)
- $10 per experienced moderator that provides their own laptop or tablet capable of editing Google Sheets
- $5 per 50 miles traveled one-way per team

Early Registration Discounts:
- $10 per team that registers on or before May 11
- Additional $10 per team that registers on or before May 8

Minimum Fees:
$60 for each regular team
$40 for each new school team

How to Register:
More logistics information will be provided closer to the date of the tournament to teams that are registered. To register (or if you have any questions), email us at [email protected] with:
1. How many teams you expect to bring (include a request for waitlisted teams)
2. The number of buzzers and moderators that you can provide
3. A contact email and phone number
4. Additional discounts (new school or distance)
5. Final expected cost (without waitlisted teams)
Please include the name of the tournament as well as your school in the subject of the email. e.g. "UCSD registration for Triton Pre-Nats”.

Registration Limits:
We are implementing a soft field cap of 8 teams until we fully confirm rooms and staffers. If we can expand the field cap, teams on the wait list will be let off about 1 week prior to the tournament.

This tournament has changed questions from ICT DII and will instead be run on Florida Spring as an open tournament. Eligibility is now open to all players who haven't played the set, which in particular means IPNCT and ICT participants are now eligibile.

Why is an open tournament being run on a novice-oriented set?

It's a college-level novice set that's entirely appropriate for an HSNCT-level field, targeted at the 4-5 teams worth of national-qualified players from this area for whom it is appropriate. Also this same team ran a large, successful tournament with a JV division last week. It seems appropriate to dial back the whole "Naveed" persona a little in this case.

I mean I think the concern is that while this set would be excellent for high school teams to prepare for nationals, making it open allows college teams/players and open players to participate, which isn’t necessarily productive for that goal. Considering the history of Southern California open tournaments, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to ask for some justification as to why this happening, since in the past both explicit and implicit open tournaments have led to strong teams dominating the field.

If you guys decide to continue with the open classification, I would at least ask that you guys take care to prevent super teams.

Eric is right that this tournament is primarily targeted towards high school teams. There are few enough high school teams in SoCal at a high enough level that this tournament would in all likelihood not be feasible as a high school-only nats-prep tournament - just last Saturday on a HS-regular set, Triton Spring had a varsity field of only six teams. College fields are similarly small, and combined tournaments are a way to help field health as well as the small number of SoCal college tournaments, while also giving the high schools in attendance competitive games on a difficult set against different opponents.

Looking at last year's iteration of the same tournament, which was also open, the presence of college and open teams definitely didn't oppress the high school teams there. (Indeed, there was only one open team attending; this tournament is intended for high schools first) If superteams do appear this year, however, we will definitely break them up or turn them away.

Thanks to everyone who staffed or attended! "Team WV" won the tournament in the second game of an advantaged final against a team of Noah Prince and Nolan Dannels. Complete stats are up.
