DC Metro 2018-2019 Date Claim Thread

Thanks Justin for maintaining the date claim thread last year!

I"ll be managing the calendar for quizbowl events in the DC Metro area for the 2018-2019 cycle. I will be including college tournaments so that colleges hosting high school tournaments can work around those - note that not all of these tournaments are open to high school teams. If you would like to add an event, please make a post in the thread below, send me a private message on the forums, or email me at [email protected]. If you can include the type of question set you're using (NAQT IS, IS-A, housewrite, etc.), that would also be very helpful. For college tournaments, please distinguish between ones that are open to high schools and ones that are not (I will assume they are open to HS unless otherwise specified).

Red: NHBB events
Orange: National championships
Green: NAQT regular season events
Purple: Novice tournaments
Magenta: College tournaments (open to high schools)
Light Blue: College tournaments (closed to high schools)
Black: Regular season, non-NAQT high school events
Asterisks after event indicates tentative date

Good point - original post has been edited to reflect this. I'll assume college tournaments are not open to HS teams unless otherwise specified.

I assume February 23rd will still be the date of the VHSL State tournament, correct?

A few updates:

> TJIAT, intended as a pre-nationals tournament, will be run on Spartan Housewrite. We will use PACE format (20 point powers, 0 point negs,
bounce backs) in anticipation of the actual event.

Updated update:

According to the VHSL, the "First Level Deadline" is January 26, the "Next Level Deadline" is February 9, and State is February 23, presumably at William & Mary.

Due to the VHSL's latest realignment, the "First Level" may consist of a Regional championship or an optional District one based on local geography. The "Super Regional" events seem to be optional, as some Regions had a "Next Level" championship, while others just sent a Regional Champion straight to State, bypassing the other round. Whether Scholastic Bowl Regions have a Super Region is determined on a Region-by-Region basis, and is optional, unlike in Debate and Forensics.

I couldn't find anything from the VHSL or NAQT indicating which packets will be converted into the VHSL format and thus ineligible for use in Virginia.

For Regions using the Super-Regional format, the most common date for the Region Tournament will likely be 1/19 with 1/26 reserved as a back-up in case of snow. The exception will be for the regions that are small enough geographically to pull off a non-Saturday tournament. (My region stretched from Bassett HS to Charlottesville HS, which is about 3 hours drive between the farthest schools). Super Regionals will most likely be scheduled for 2/2 with 2/9 as a back-up in case of snow.

For Regions that don't use the Super-Regional format (and therefore quite possibly keep the second best team in the state from advancing out of their own regions... grr... stop doing this regions), Regionals will likely be scheduled for 2/2 with 2/9 as a back-up. I don't know what the First Level is considered for those regions.

The Southwest Virginia Academic Team Alliance (SWATA) would like to claim the following tentative dates for our 2019 circuit:

* October 13th -- Steele Memorial Invitational 2 at Honaker (potential alt. date Oct. 20)
* November 10th-- Legion Memorial Invitational Tournament 3 at Gate City (alt. date Nov. 3)
* December 8th-- B.E.A.R.C.A.T. 2 at Virginia High School (alt. date Dec. 15)
* January 5th-- Tornado Invitational 2 at Richlands (alt. date Jan 12)

Alternate dates have been listed because we are still a few months out, but the 1st date listed is the most likely date for each event-- especially in December/January, when the threat of Appalachian snow constantly looms.

As in years past, these tournaments will be open exclusively to teams from Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Buchanan, Russell, Washington, Smyth, Tazewell, Grayson, Bland, and Wythe counties as well as the independent city of Norton. SWATA coaches have agreed to expand the footprint to now include Carroll County and the city of Galax. SWATA maintains this "border" due to geographic and financial limitations which usually prevent the majority of our region's teams from traveling 4+ hours to Richmond, Charlottesville, the Tidewater, or the DC-Metro area.

While some teams from outside the footprint have been inquiring about future participation, we still feel that this circuit's primary goal is to provide accessibility for teams with a limited capacity for travel. However, there has been serious discussion about running a 5th tournament which would feature an expanded footprint (if not 100% open); nothing set in stone yet, though.

Question sets have yet to be determined, but due to the recent overlap in NAQT and VHSL questions, we expect the 4 tournaments to feature both NAQT and housewritten sets.

Just wanted to add on to our original announcement about our NCIS tournament, which is still on for February 16th. We secured the RMBAT set to be used at the tournament. We are still waiting on posting an official announcement until we figure out where we are hosting the event. It's most likely going to be at the Cave Spring Middle School but we're not quite sure until they start construction on the new high school.

EDIT (12/31): We've changed the date back to 2/2, due to staffing shortages (SCT is on 2/9).

I'd just like to encourage all teams planning to host spring tournaments to consider Yale's BHSAT XXVIII set (more information available here). There's currently no DC Metro area of the set and we think it would be excellent preparation for tournaments like PACE NSC! FYI IS-177 was used by JHU earlier in the year so many DC area teams won't be able to attend that tournament (I say this mostly because on this thread the set for the Hopkins tournament is incorrectly listed as IS-179)

This will be posted on the appropriate Date Claim thread when the 2019-2020 thread is up.

Centennial will be hosting our usual NAQT A set in the fall, but we needed to move it earlier to Sunday October 6, one day after the SATs. This is one month sooner than our usual date. Traditionally we have attracted 64 teams, allowing us to qualify multilple teams from a single high school for HSNCT and PACE.
