ReKT @ Westview High School (3/17/18) - San Diego, CA

Post by vrohan »

Westview High School is pleased to announce ReKT (Real Knowledge Tournament), a high school tournament co-directed by Kevin Yu and Rohan Venkateswaran.

QUESTION SET: The varsity division will be using FACTS, a regular-plus high school-level set written mainly by the Charter School of Wilmington and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. The junior varsity division will use SCOP Novice 8, a novice set catered towards less-experienced high school or high-achieving middle school teams.

DATE/TIME: The tournament will take place on Saturday, 17 March, 2018. Check-in will begin at 8:00 A.M., and matches will begin promptly at 9:00 A.M.

LOCATION: The tournament will take place on the campus of Westview High School, located at 13500 Camino del Sur, San Diego, CA 92129. Vehicles may park in either lot and persons may enter the campus through the front gates. Matches will take place in the classrooms in the D and G buildings. A map of the campus can be found here.

REGISTRATION: Teams must register by filling out this Google Form or by emailing [email protected] with the following information: (1) the school's name, (2) the number of teams, (3) the number of buzzers, (4) the number of moderators. Registrations will be confirmed with a reply email. Replying to this thread will not register a team. The registration fee may be paid on-site with either cash or check. Please make all checks payable to Westview Quizbowl.

The Varsity division has a soft cap of 12 teams and the Junior Varsity division of 18 teams.

ELIGIBILITY:
All teams are welcome to play in the varsity division.

To qualify for the junior varsity division, all members on a team must meet all of these criteria:
-has no more than two (2) years of experience playing high school quizbowl
-has not attended a high school nationals tournament
-has not won more than three (3) tournaments in a single school year at the JV or varsity level
-has not scored more than 70 points per game (PPG) at any high school tournament

PRICING:
Teams that did not play any tournaments in the 2016-2017 season will pay a flat $30 per team.

$80 for the first team
$70 for subsequent teams

All middle school teams will start at $70 before the discounts apply.

DISCOUNTS:
- $5 per working buzzer system (must accommodate at least eight players)
- $10 per experienced moderator
- $5 per 50 miles traveled one-way per school

Minimum fee: $40 per team

TOURNAMENT FORMAT: We will be using official NAQT rules, with the exception that matches will be run as untimed halves of ten questions each. In addition, ACF rules will be followed regarding timing and tiebreakers. A preliminary round robin in the morning will be followed by round robin playoffs in the afternoon based on win-loss records. Ties will be resolved on the basis of points per game (PPG) within brackets, and ties crossing different brackets will be resolved on the basis of points per bonus (PPB).

FOOD: A light breakfast will be provided in the lobby, and eateries exist within a comfortable 5-10 minute walking distance of the campus. Food options include places such as Cotijas, Rubio’s, PizzaRev, Subway, Pick Up Stix, Luna Grill, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, etc.

INQUIRIES: Any inquiries can be resolved through emailing [email protected].

We have received Platinum Certification from PACE, meaning that the top 25% of the field will qualify for the PACE NSC (National Scholastic Competition) to be held on June 2-3, 2018 in Reston, VA.

Due to the number of moderators available for this tournament, we are instituting a soft cap of 12 teams in the Varsity division and 18 teams in the JV division. The original announcement has been edited to reflect this change.

As of March 4, our JV cap has been reached. All future registered teams will be waitlisted.

As of March 7, the field cap for both divisions has been reached. We have also started waitlisting teams in the event of another team dropping.

As of March 15, due to drops in the Varsity division, the field is now at 10 teams.

Just realized I forgot to post stats for this on the forums. In the Varsity division, Canyon Crest A cleared the field by 2 games to win outright. Rancho Bernardo B won the JV divison by being the only team to go 4-1 or better in playoffs in the Championship bracket. Congratulations to them, along with all teams that participated!

Thank you to every person who came to participate in the tournament! We hope to see you at future tournaments which we run.
