2016 NAQT New Jersey State Championship (3/26/16)

Post by Majin Buu Roi »

Princeton University Quiz Bowl is proud to announce that we will be hosting the 2016 NAQT New Jersey State Championship on the Princeton campus on March 26th, 2016, using NAQT IS-156. This tournament will also serve as the final leg of the Columbia Cup tournament series (more information here http://columbiaquizbowl.org/columbia_cup.html), and will only be open to New Jersey teams. We will be using the rules enumerated here (https://www.naqt.com/rules.html) except in that we will not time our matches (they will simply consist of twenty toss-ups) and in that we will skip any computational math questions.

We will open registration at 8am in Robertson Hall (not our usual building, but the New Formalist, Parthenon-looking building across the street). We hope to have our moderator meeting by 8:45 and have matches start by 9:15. The cost structure is as follows:
$80 / first team
$60 / every additional team
- $15 / experienced moderator with laptop for the purpose of electronic scorekeeping
- $10/ experienced moderator without laptop
- $5 / buzzer set
Note: a combination of one moderator without a laptop and and one scorekeeper with one will count as a single "moderator with laptop discount." Scorekeepers will not garner a discount otherwise.
*If your school is already taking part in the Columbia Cup series, your registration is already guaranteed at no additional charge. Any additional team that you register will instead count as your "first" team*

If you are interested in participating, please fill out the following registration form:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1UTW1OM ... s/viewform

We will have an initial field cap of 36 teams, but if we have sufficient interest and staffing capability we will consider expanding the field. We will also be restricting each school to four teams each. If we still have room as the tournament date approaches, we may consider lifting that cap as well. We hope to see you all on campus on the 26th.

Field as of 3/23 (teams/moderators/buzzers):
Point Pleasant HS (3/0/0)
East Brunswick (4/1/1)
Pennsville Memorial (2/0/1)
Middlesex County Academy (2/0/2)
MAST (1/1/0)
Bergen (2/1/2)
Livingston (2/0/1)
High Tech (1/0/3)
Ridgewood (2/0/3)
West Essex (3/1/0)

Guaranteed a spot on account of Columbia Cup participation:
St. Joseph's (1/?/?)

Spots taken/guaranteed: 23/36

With just under three weeks to go before tournament day, 7/12 of available spaces have either been taken or reserved for Columbia Cup participants. Sign up soon to reserve a spot (and give us adequate time to get you an invoice). If you are brining a moderator, wi-fi enabled laptops are particularly appreciated.

I just filled out the form and gave the wrong e-mail for Ridgewood High School. Instead of "[email protected]," I meant to write "[email protected]." Sorry for the inconvenience.

One week to go before the tournament. Expect invoices from our treasure Oliver Sun ([email protected]) shortly, and look out for a preliminary logistics email from me either tomorrow, Sunday, or Monday.

Thank you very much to every one who came, and thanks again for your patience with all the schedule-restructuring and SQBS crashing. I hope everybody had fun in spite of occasional chaos. After the crossovers, High Tech defeated East Brunswick A in a nail-biter semi-final for the right to play Bergen A in the final, which itself turned out to a spectacularly game from which High Tech emerged victorious. I will hopefully have full stats posted by the end of the night.

Also, a HUGE thank you to Coach Pinyan for his scheduling suggestions and indispensable efforts to keep the tournament moving.

I'm happy to help, and wish to congratulate High Tech on an amazing fifth straight state title (for a moment there, I thought my kids were gonna break the streak...). The fact that the top five teams were at or above 425 PPG and 22 PPB is a sign of good things to come for the region later this spring in Dallas and Chicago.
