2016 Massachusetts State Championship

Post by Rosie the Riveter »

Attn. Quizbowlers of Massachusetts:
You are hereby invited to the Massachusetts NAQT State Championship (on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Phillips Academy Andover) for a day of fun, buzzing, and FOOD (yes, food). Yay! More information:

REGISTRATION
High school teams from Massachusetts are welcome to register for the tournament; we encourage you to do so promptly, especially as the competition date approaches. The maximum number of teams is 18, and will hopefully increase to 24 at a later date (if we receive more buzzer sets). To register, please email [email protected] with your school name and the amount of teams, staffers, and buzzers you plan to bring.

LOGISTICS
The tournament will be held on the Phillips Academy Andover campus. Check-in will be opened at 8:15 and run until 9:00 AM in Kemper Auditorium, which is located on Chapel Street. Game-play will take place in Gelb Science Center as soon as all teams are present, at approximately 9:15. Should all go as planned, we anticipate to end the tournament around 5:00 PM.

PACKET SET
We will be using NAQT’s question set IS-156.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS (please refer to CITATIONS)
The top 15% of the field will qualify for NAQT’s 2016 High School National Championship Tournament. In addition, if all of the teams in the top 15% have already qualified for HSNCT, then the top not-yet-qualified team will also qualify. More information about the HSNCT is available here.

Any small schools that finish in the top 15% of the field will qualify for NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament. The top-finishing small school that has not yet qualified will also qualify for SSNCT if it finishes outside of the top 15%. More information about the SSNCT is available here.

Finally, we will be seeking affiliation with PACE, so that at least 15% and potentially up to 25% of the top finishers will qualify for PACE’s National Scholastic Championship. More information about the NSC is available here.

RULES (please refer to CITATIONS)
The game format will have 20 tossup questions answerable by either team. If a team answers a tossup correctly, it will have an opportunity to answer an unrelated multi-part bonus question. There will be no computational math questions.

Each team may have up to six players on its roster, though only four players may play at any given time. If you intend to bring seven or more players, please register another team.

There will be a playoff format to be determined by the number of teams, but it will likely be some form of round-robin. All teams will be guaranteed to play at least 9 games, and all teams will be matched in the playoff rounds against teams of similar skill level.

FEES
The fees for this tournament are as follows:

+$75 first team from a school
+$65 for each subsequent team
−$10 discount per working buzzer system
−$5 discount per staffer provided
The minimum fee for a school is $30.

LUNCH
We will order pizza on the day of the tournament. You will be able to purchase it for what we like to call “The AMSA Deal”—that is, a water bottle and two slices of pizza for $5. Our campus is also within a ten- to fifteen-minute walking distance of several great restaurants, which we can recommend to you at a later date.

CONTACT US
Again, please send all questions, comments, concerns, angst-filled poetry, existential crises, and fan mail to [email protected]. Further information for registered teams is forthcoming. We look forward to seeing you on April 9th for a fun and exciting day of competition!

Yours, &c.,

P. Winkler and T. Drew ‘17

Also, we have received Platinum Certification from PACE! That means that the top 25% of teams will qualify for PACE-NSC!
