Virginia NAQT States @ UVa (3/19/16)

Post by Beevor Feevor »

The Academic Competition Club at UVA will be hosting the Virginia NAQT State Championship on March 19, 2016 using NAQT IS-156, the designated state tournament set. We will not be using computational math tossups at this tournament, and the field is tentatively capped at 28 teams. All Virginia middle and high schools, public and private, are eligible for this tournament.

Location: This tournament will be held in New Cabell Hall, and we'll be meeting at 9 AM in a room TBD.

Parking: There is a decent-sized parking lot quite close to New Cabell. An address you can plug into a GPS that will get you close to this lot is 400 Brandon Avenue, Charlottesville, VA. That address is for the Elson Student Health Center, which will be on your left as you turn onto Brandon from Jefferson Park Avenue. Student Health also has a parking lot but threatens to tow without a UVA permit. The lot I suggest is past Student Health on Brandon Ave and will be on the right. Once you've parked, New Cabell Hall is the very large building across Jefferson Park Avenue. If you cross the street at JPA and Brandon, turn left and walk up the ramp or stairs to the side door of the building, which will put you on the first floor on the right side of the building. Both stairs and an elevator are accessible from this entrance.

This tournament will be a chance to qualify for the NAQT HSNCT (top 15% of the field will qualify). We are also now Platinum certified from PACE, so the top 25% of the field, rounded up, will qualify for PACE NSC in Chicago, IL this year!

Team size: There can be a maximum number of 6 players on each team’s roster, with substitutions possible at half-time and between games. If you wish to bring 7 or 8 players, we ask that you register a second team, and so on for anyone with larger numbers of players.

Food: There is a buffet-style dining hall near New Cabell Hall that will be open on this date. We’ll have a list of other food options available on the day of the tournament as well. We will not be providing breakfast or lunch for teams.

Fee structure:
Base fee: $70 per team
Buzzer discount: $5 for each system on which the control box and 8 buzzers work.
Staff discount: $10 for a parent, coach, non-playing student, etc. To qualify for the discount, volunteer staffers must stay through all games, not including finals.
Travel discount (200 miles or more, one way): $10
Minimum fee: $45

To register, please email the tournament director, Lawrence Simon, at [email protected]. Checks should be made out to “Academic Competition Club,” though we can also accept cash. Please pay either in advance or, preferably, on the day of the tournament. If you wish to pay in advance, please indicate this in your registration and Lawrence will send you an address. Likewise, please let him know if you require either an invoice or a W-9 form.

We hope to see you all in March!

I am pleased to announce that we are now Platinum certified by PACE! Also, this tournament will be run by our new tournament director, Lawrence Simon. The initial post has been edited to reflect that, and please email registrations and questions to him at [email protected].

For those interested the UVA Quizbowl team would like to hold tryouts for a Virginia NASAT team during lunch at this event if there is enough interest from those attending. If you're interested feel free to message me along with the names of any other teammates that might be interested in trying out. Keep in mind that NASAT will be held on June 18-19 at the University of Kentucky. A set to be used is TBD but for more information about NASAT in general here is the original post: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 16#p308492

Isn't Quince Orchard in Maryland? I thought this was only open to Virginia teams??

The official NAQT policy for this is stated thusly:
State Championships and Qualifiers are restricted to teams from a single state unless other arrangements have been made with NAQT at least 7 calendar days before the tournament.
This is especially the case when teams don't have a state championship to play in themselves. Seeing as Maryland doesn't have an NAQT State Championship this year and that Quince Orchard gained permission from NAQT within this time frame, we have allowed them into our field.

Thank you to all of the teams that came out to this year's Virginia NAQT State Championship as well as the great staff that made this tournament happen. In particular the many staffers from VCU that assisted in this tournament. Congratulations to our top brackets finishers: Thomas Jefferson A in 1st place, Thomas Jefferson B in 2nd place, Quince Orchard in 3rd place, Maggie Walker A in 4th place, Cave Spring A in 5th place, and Maggie Walker B in 6th place.

Combined stats for yesterday's tournament can be found here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /combined/

We hope that all teams that attended enjoyed their day in Charlottesville and we look forward to having them back for future tournaments!
