San Diego Quizbowl is pleased to announce:
Triton Fall V at UCSD
LOCATION:9500 Gilman Dr., La Jolla, California, 92093
We are most likely using our usual spot at the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, though we may also use the Center Hall building that two of our tournaments took place in last year. This will be determined a week before the tournament, but both are within five minutes of each other. We will send out additional information to registered teams as the tournament approaches by contact email, the SoCalQB Facebook group, and this post.
DATE: The tournament will be held on Saturday, November 14. Check-in begins at 8:00 am, and first round should begin around 9 am. Schedules will be distributed at check-in.
FORMAT: This tournament will be one of the main sites of CALI, a regular difficulty question set written and edited by a team of players associated with California quiz bowl, including several members of Quiz Bowl at UCSD. For more information on the set, see here. The tournament will adhere to Official NAQT Rules with a few exceptions:
-Each round will be run as two untimed, 10-question halves
-Players will be given five seconds to answer after buzzing in on a tossup
The schedule will be a preliminary round robin followed by reseeding based on results from the round robin phase. Seedings in the individual sub-brackets will be determined by the overall win-loss record. Interbracket ties for reseeding will be resolved based on points per bonus, while intrabracket ties will be resolved by points per game.
ELIGIBILITY: All high school students are welcome to attend.
PRICING STRUCTURE:
Base fee = $80 for one team, $70 per team after the first
Discounts will be given as follows:
-$5 for each fully-functional buzzer system (must have at least four working buzzers on both sides)
-$10 for traveling distances over 100 miles, according to Google Maps
-$10 moderator discount
Minimum fee = $60/team, unless team has received an outreach discount from Quiz Bowl at UCSD*
*Flat $20 fee for first team, and then $30 for next team
Please make checks payable to: San Diego Quizbowl. Please do not make a check out to any other person or entity. Checks, or cash will be due at the start of the tournament during registration. Should your team not be able to provide the payment at this time, and would like to send their registration fee in advance or later, please contact the Tournament Director at [email protected] to make the proper arrangements.
PRIZES: Prizes will be offered to the top teams, as well as to the top individual scorers.
REGISTRATION: The tournament director is Jason Cheng. If you are interested in attending or have any questions, send an email to [email protected] OR reply to this thread with the following information:
1) Your school's name
2) The number of teams you are bringing
3) The number of buzzer systems you will bring
4) Any moderators you have to offer
5) Price you are expecting to pay, after subtracting relevant discounts.
Schools will be limited to two (2) teams upon registration until further notice--any additional teams will be added to a waitlist that the TD will allow into the field on a rolling basis.
Updates about the tournament will primarily be through the hsquizbowl.org forums, along with contact email and the SoCalQB Facebook Group.
