Dorman Cav Challenge, 1.16.16, Spartanburg SC, CALI set

Post by thomasgnd »

The Dorman Quizbowl Team is pleased to announce its 26th Cavalier Challenge, to be held on Saturday, 16 January 2016 on our campus at 1050 Cavalier Way, Roebuck SC 29376. We are conveniently located at I-26 exit 28, the intersection between I-26 and US-221 just south of Spartanburg SC.

The event will use the regular-difficulty CALI set. We will track powers and negs for teams, though not individuals, and bonuses will not bounce.

We will not cap this field, and it has reached between 70 and 120 teams throughout its history, making it one of the nation's largest quizbowl events. Round-robin groups will be contested in morning rounds, after which a rebracket will take place, followed by round-robin play for the championship. A final or advantage final will be played if necessary. We will offer trophies to the champion, runner-up, and third- and fourth-place teams.

While we will not also have a separate JV division, we will designate teams that include no players older than 10th grade as JV, and we will award first- and second-place trophies for the best JV teams.

The cost per team will be $65. To insure maximum efficiency of operation, we ask that teams stay on campus for lunch, which will be prepared and served by our parent association at a cost of $5 per student and free for one adult per team. Concessions will also be available for purchase throughout the day.

Registration will take place at the school's front desk from 7:30-8:40am, followed by a brief coaches' meeting at 8:40am. Games will begin, whether or not all teams have arrived, at 9am. The lunch break will occur as close to noon as possible, and the tournament should end by 5pm, if not earlier.

Paper invitations will be mailed to schools in our general area of SC, western NC, northern GA, and eastern TN in late August or early September and again in early November. If you are not in this area but would like to receive an invitation, please respond to this post, send me a private message on this site, or email me at [email protected]. Alternately, you may register, express interest, or voice any questions via any of the three above-listed options.

We look forward to hosting a great event and will happy to greet you in Upstate South Carolina!

As of today, the field for this tournament stands at 32, and because of logistical issues that have arisen, it is now CLOSED. We are happy to add further interested teams to our waiting list, and we apologize for having to close the field. Unfortunately, the change is unavoidable from a practical standpoint.

Thanks to everyone who attended. We had a good event. Dunbar A defeated Southside A in a close final, and Russell topped James Island for third place. The quarterfinalists were Danville A, Eastside A, Spartanburg A, and TJ Classical A. Brevard, Riverside A, Riverside B, SCGSSM, Southside B, Southside Christian, TJ Classical B, and Waccamaw A also made the playoffs. TJ Classical B was the JV champion.

Stats can be found at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... all_games/.
