UC-San Diego Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce Triton Pre-Nationals Tournament at UCSD on Sunday, May 24:

LOCATION: 9500 Gilman Dr., La Jolla, California, 92093.

We are most likely using our usual spot at the Humanities and Social Sciences Building. We will send out additional information to registered teams as the tournament approaches by contact email, the SoCalQB Facebook group, and this post.

DATE: The tournament will be held on Sunday, May 24. Check-in begins at 8:00 am, and first round should begin around 9 am. Schedules will be distributed at check-in.

FORMAT: The tournament will mirror NAQT Division 2 ICT, which is a close approximation to NAQT's High School National Championship (the set is traditionally a shade harder than HSNCT). The tournament will adhere to Official NAQT Rules, with the exception that each round will be run as two untimed, 10-question halves and you will be given 5 seconds to answer after buzzing on a tossup.

ELIGIBILITY: All high school students are welcome to attend; however, the field will be much smaller for this tournament, and we reserve the right to select attendees that will provide the closest approximation to strong nationals playoffs field.

As the set is much harder than any set that we would normally host for high schools, we encourage only teams with plans to attend either the PACE National Scholastic Championship or the NAQT High School National Championship happening in the weeks immediately following this tournament to register. You may still register if you are not attending either, but are looking for a challenge. Teams looking to attend a more orthodox tournament can register for Triton Spring V, which shall be held on the Saturday before.

Base fee = $80 for one team, $70 per team after the first

Discounts will be given as follows:
-$5 for each fully-functional buzzer system (must have at least four working buzzers on both sides)
-$10 for traveling distances over 100 miles, according to Google Maps
-$80 if two members of a team you are fielding to this tournament staffed Triton Spring V the week before (may not claim this discount more than once)

Please make checks payable to San Diego Quizbowl. Please do not make a check out to any other person or entity. Checks, or cash will be due at the start of the tournament during registration. Should your team not be able to provide the payment at this time, and would like to send their registration fee in advance or later, please contact the Tournament Director at [email protected] to make the proper arrangements.

PRIZES: Book prizes will be offered to the top teams, as well as to the top individual scorers. In addition, the name of the top scorer will be engraved into the David Hu Memorial plaque in honor of David Hu of Rancho Bernardo High School, who sadly passed away in January 2012 in his senior year.

REGISTRATION: The tournament director is Jason Cheng. If you are interested in attending or have any questions, send an email to [email protected] OR reply to this thread with the following information:

1) Your school's name
2) The number of teams you are bringing
3) The number of buzzer systems you will bring
4) Any moderators you have to offer
5) Price you are expecting to pay, after subtracting relevant discounts.
6) Rosters

We will notify you shortly on whether or not your team is accepted into the field.

Updates about the tournament will primarily be through the forums, along with contact email and the SoCalQB Facebook Group.

Thank you,

Jason Cheng
