2005 Maryland Classic: James Ewell Brown Rides Again

Post by The Goffman Prophecies »

The University of Maryland Academic Quiz Team is pleased to announce its annual Maryland Classic tournament. This year, it will be held at the University of Maryland College Park on Sunday, May 1st. Every team is guaranteed to play five games in a bracketed round-robin, and the top teams advance to a seeded single elimination playoff. The number of teams advancing will be dependant on the number of teams registered. In addition, the top four teams will automatically qualify for the PACE National Scholastics Championship to be at Valencia Community College in Orlando, FL on June 11-12, 2005. The games will be played in the tossup/bonus format, with conferring forbidden on tossups but allowed on bonus. There shall be 20 tossups per game.

The teams will be divided into brackets. Each bracket will play a full round-robin of at least five preliminary games. You may have four players playing at any one time (not just three, although you mayexi play shorthanded). Alternates may be substituted at halftime of rounds, although not among teams, if you bring multiple teams.

Registration will start at 8 am. There will be a rules meeting at 8:30 and play will begin at 9 am. There will be a break for lunch, during which you can find restaurants on Route 1 and in the Stamp Student Union. The preliminary rounds should end at approximately 3 pm. Trophies will be given to the first and second place teams.

The cost is $50 for the first team you send, $40 for each additional team, and a $10 discount per working buzzer system you bring (bring as many as you like). A question set will be emailed after the tournament to all registered schools.

Please make checks payable to the Maryland Academic Quiz Team.

Please try to let us know by Saturday, April 23rd if you will be coming, and how many teams and buzzer systems you will bring. To register, you can call me at (301) 801-1155, or email me at [email protected]. You may pay by mail when you register, or at the tournament. Once you have registered, we will get you more information regarding times, location, maps, etc.

One last topic: If anyone on your team is interested in continuing to play quiz bowl at the university level and you are considering attending the University of Maryland, then we are very interested in them. We have a strong quiz bowl tradition, and we rely on good recruiting classes each year to continue our winning tradition. If any of your students are interested, have them talk to one of our team members at the tournament.

Sincerely,
Dan Goff

Ah, results.

We wound up with 14 teams. After 9 prelim rounds, Gonzaga A was 8-1, followed by a circle of death for second between Richard Mongtomery, Walt Whitman A and Blake at 7-2

The four teams were seeded and played a single-elim playoff (with a 3rd place match).
