The Quiz Bowl team of Columbia University is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a quizbowl tournament in the fall on Saturday, December 6, 2014. This tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend. The questions will come from the Brookwood Invitational Scholars' Bowl (BISB), a tournament written by members of the Georgia Tech Academic Team. More information about this set is available here.

The questions will follow a modified ACF format; that is, untimed games of 20 tossups with 30-point bonuses. The questions will be distributed for free in electronic format after all sites have been completed. Sample packets from last year's incarnation can be found here: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/718/

FORMAT: The field will be capped at 24 teams, but expansion might be possible if staff resources, room reservations, and sufficient interest in this tournament make it feasible.

A format will be devised when we have a clearer picture of how many staffers and teams will be in attendance. All teams will be offered a minimum of 9 games in any format. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams, and book prizes will be awarded to the top eight individual scorers.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:

-The fee structure is as follows:

Base fee: $70 per team.
Buzzer discount*: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system.
Staffer discount*: $10 off school's total fee. This could be a coach or student who is not playing.
Travel discount: For teams travelling to the tournament from out-of-town, we will be happy to work out travel discounts on a case-by-case basis.

*Buzzer discounts will only be awarded for fully functional units (i.e. the control box and all eight activators work). Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except finals) in order to receive credit for their school. If you intend to bring staff, please let us know earlier rather than later.

-To register, e-mail [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and an email address where you can be contacted with details. We also ask that all teams provide a cell phone number by which they can be contacted on the day of the tournament in the case of emergencies. You should receive prompt confirmation of your registration. Feel free to share this announcement with any schools you think would be interested in attending. There is no further registration form or other action needed on your part in order to be officially registered; you only need to e-mail Ben at that address with the information requested.

METHOD OF PAYMENT: All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person right before the tournament starts, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if your procedures require it. We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment; please do not bring them to the tournament expecting them to be accepted.

If you are paying by check, please make it payable to “Columbia University” with “Quiz Bowl” on the memo line. If you require a pre-tournament invoice in order to have a check cut, let us know as soon as possible so that we can send you the paperwork in time.

Unless special arrangements are made with the tournament director beforehand, any team that has not paid by the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 late fee and will have two weeks to pay in full before we start mailing letters to their school administration about it.

LOCATION: This tournament will take place in Hamilton Hall on the grounds of Columbia University. The exact address is 1130 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10027. Hamilton is the highlighted building on this map.

TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING: We strongly encourage all teams to take public transportation to the tournament if possible. The 1 train stops right outside campus, and a number of buses also stop nearby. There are a few parking garages in the neighborhood, but they can be expensive. Parking is sometimes available on Morningside Drive between 116th and 120th street.

TIMES: Registration will run from 8:00 to 8:30. An opening meeting will then follow, with the goal of starting Round 1 as soon as possible after 8:45. Teams arriving after 8:45 run the risk of forfeiting their first game.

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There will be a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day - no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded if necessary.

FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided at this tournament. We will provide suggestions for local eateries upon request.

Please e-mail [email protected] if you have any further questions, or wish to register. We’re looking forward to seeing a wide variety of teams from New York and surrounding states on December 6!

This tournament is now full; any further registrations will be placed on the waitlist. However, registrations are still encouraged, since I anticipate that we will be able to admit several teams from the waitlist. We are also considering the possibility of expanding the field if the waitlist becomes sizeable.

Wow! Your field was filled up quickly!

Saint Joe's of Metuchen, NJ would like to add 2 teams, 2 buzzers and 1 moderator to the waitlist, hoping, of course, that you can expand your field significantly.

If you can staff this tournament, get in touch with me at [email protected] as soon as possible - we have 14 teams on the waitlist for a 28-team tournament, and we'd like to expand if possible.

St. Luke's School from New Canaan, CT would like to place 2 teams on the waitlist in hopes that you expand the field. We may be able to bring a staff member, but not sure. We will be unable to bring a buzzer system.

Unfortunately, our request for additional rooms was denied, so we will be unable to expand the field significantly. We may be able to expand the field to 30 teams if we determine that we can run an efficient tournament without using the 15th room as a dedicated control room, and a final decision will come soon.

Hi everyone, I'm really sorry about this. At the beginning of the semester, I put in a request for enough rooms to accommodate 20-28 teams, which is the sort of interest we'd attracted in the past. Now that I know many more teams would like to attend tournaments at Columbia, I'll be sure to put in lareger initial requests in the future so that we don't get squeezed out later on in the semester by other groups. We hope to see all of you at our bigger and better spring tournament!

The field has been expanded to 30 teams, meaning we will do 5 prelim pools of 6, rebracketed into the same for the afternoon.

Thanks. Just a suggestion: To enable as many schools to register for the event, you might want to initially limit 2 teams per school.

Congratulations to High Tech A, who defeated Bethlehem Central (Eric Wolfsberg solo) in the second game of an advantaged final. Ridgewood and Livingston A rounded out the rest of the superplayoff teams, receiving 3rd and 4th place, respectively.

Statistics are posted here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/2542

A big thank you to all of the players, coaches, and staffers, without whom this tournament could not have happened. If your school is in New York, we hope to see you at the New York Metro State Championship, hosted at Columbia University on March 7! An announcement will be forthcoming.

Ben, volunteers, and tournament team,

Thank you for running an excellent - on time - well managed tournament. Bethlehem; ie Eric and his Dad  had a great time on Saturday. I'm surprised with how well you did at everything else, you could not do something about the rain....

Also, Congratulations to Hi-Tech. An impressive win coming back to win two in a row. If you look at the string of powers that team put together in the two finals, I'm not sure there are many teams in the country that would have beaten them.
