Centennial Tourney NAQT IS-141A Ellicott City, MD (11/09/14)

Post by eseifte1 »

This is our first announcement for the Centennial High School Tournament in Ellicott City, Maryland to be held on Sunday November 9, 2014 at 8:30 AM (one day after the SATs).

For our 10th annual tournament, we will be using an NAQT introductory A set, specifically 141A. This question set is an INTRODUCTORY set written to accommodate new players, so this tournament will be ideal for teams new to quiz bowl or new members of established teams. These questions can also help to hone rapid buzzing skills for more experienced teams and players.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend, even the most experienced teams. Like last year, we are planning to have a novice field composed of teams with 9th and 10th graders or teams of any age new to Quizbowl and a varsity field composed of experienced teams. The novice field will have its own trophies but will not be eligible for the NAQT and PACE championship tournaments. Obviously teams can elect to participate in the varsity regardless of players' age and experience. We are using this format in order to avoid the 660 to 10 scores in mismatched contests that are frustrating for all involved. If there is enough interest, we will group the middle school teams into their own bracket or parallel competition.

We picked this date to avoid the snowmageddon we had last year.

Last year 72 teams signed up; to ensure a spot, consider reserving early!

We will seek NAQT and PACE qualification and keep you posted on our rating. Last year our tournament allowed many local teams to qualify for a National Tournament.

Like last year, we are expecting all teams to stay for the rounds after lunch, and we will require reregistration at lunch to verify afternoon participation.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and we will provide our traditional breakfast banquet. For those teams wishing to stay on site for lunch pizza will be sold at registration.

We will have a coaches/parents' round during lunch with fossils/minerals as prizes, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Howard County Special Olympics.

The cost for teams participating in the tournament is $70 for the first team and $60 for each extra team from the same school. Teams can bring a working buzzer for a $10 discount (but only one buzzer set per team entered).

Centennial High School is located at 4300 Centennial Lane, Ellicott City, MD 21042

To register, e-mail [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, e-mail address, and telephone number where we can contact you on the day of the tournament in case of inclement weather. Feel free to share this announcement with other teams that might be interested in attending.

GOOD NEWS: We have Platinum Certification from PACE and we are using an NAQT set.

This means 25% of teams in the varsity field will be eligible for the PACE Nationals in Reston, VA.
Based on prior years (field of 32), this will mean around 8 teams.

This also means that 15% of the total number of teams will be eligible for the NAQT Nationals (HSNCT) in Chicago. Based on prior years (field of 72), we anticipate 10 or 11 teams (all derived from the upper "varsity" bracket).

So far we have 9 Middle School teams. We will definitely present trophies to the top 3 Middle School teams separate from the trophies for the Novice division. If more Middle Schools sign up, we will create separate brackets for these teams. We have 4 trophies for the Varsity side, 4 trophies for the Novice side, and 3 trophies for the middle schoolers.

With 10 middle school teams signed up, we have a sufficient number of teams to create a separate bracket with 3 trophies for the middle schools only. We will have 3 trophies for Novice and 4 trophies for Varsity.
We are now 2 weeks away from closing registration (October 27).
We have 36 teams registered so far.
Please get your reservation in soon if you want to join us.

We have registered 77 teams so far: 32 varsity, 33 novice, and 12 middle school. We will have 3 separate war rooms and 3 separate tournaments off of the same NAQT set.
The deadline for guaranteed registration is next Monday October 27. After that point, teams will go on a wait list and fill into slots vacated by reneging teams and to round out brackets. We have set no limit on the number of teams prior to the deadline.
We will have a lavish breakfast buffet and plan on a Coach's and Parent's competition at lunch.
We have a pizza option for teams at lunch also.

We have 80 teams registered. Tomorrow we will close registration and start the wait-list.
We are allowing teams to bring extra buzzers for $10 credit each (even if you are bringing one team, you can bring 3 buzzers for a $30 discount for example).

Standard registration has closed but we are still accepting wait-list teams. Historically, these become necessary with last minute changes by our entrants. We are poised to create scab teams from NHS volunteers who are quizbowl newbies in order to "round out" brackets as needed. This will avoid the unnecessary "bye" rounds.
We are still in need of a few more buzzer sets ($10 off for each set)!

Thank you. We have a sufficient number of buzzers (and some extras).
We have initiated a wait-list. Please see the roster above.
We are planning for 80 teams and will use NHS scab teams if needed.

Great tournament guys! Aside from that long delay after the 8th round, the tournament went well. Congrats to the PACE qualifiers and the tournament champion!

Does anyone know when the stats for this tournament might get uploaded to the NAQT database?

Please note the board rule which states that "No thread may contain more than one request for the posting of tournament statistics within the same week or from the same person." I'm sure the stats will be posted as soon as possible; posting after them does not serve any purpose.

Stats are now posted to naqt.com.

Please note that Coach Seifter's post above is slightly mistaken about HSNCT qualification from this tournament: the top 10 high school teams have qualified for HSNCT (not the top 12). (The middle school division does not count toward the field size for this purpose, because it is a distinct qualifier for MSNCT.)
