I have received confirmation from Rob Carson that we can use the 2014 MUT Set for our NJ NASAT Try-Outs. So, these will be held at St. Joe's on April 12th after the 4th Annual GSAC tournament finishes. Assuming a 5:30-6:00 PM finish of the GSAC at the latest, we can run 2 rounds in 2 rooms as we did last year, allowing all interested students to compete for up to 2 disciplines, and be finished circa 7:30 PM. The 4 disciplines to be tested will be Science, History, Literature and the Humanities, as we did last year. The 4 winners in each of these disciplines will be able to join the top 2 vote-getters on the All State team, which will be determined at the Livingston tournament on March 15th. These top 2 will NOT be allowed to compete for one of the four seats on April 12th.

We will also charge a $5.00 fee for each student trying-out in order to pay for the MUT Set that we will be using.

If you are interested in trying-out, please register here on this forum or email me at

[email protected]

When you sign up, let me know which discipline(s) you intend to compete for, knowing that 2 is the max. This will allow us to create the most balanced schedule possible. If it turns out that your 2 best disciplines---let's say history and lit, for example---both run simultanaeoulsy, then obviously you must choose the one which gives you the best chance of making the NASAT team. We will try to schedule the 2 rounds with as few conflicts as possible, as we did last year.

I will periodically update this site with registrants in each respective discipline. So, if interested, register ASAP, either here or via email.

Registrants for the 4 Disciplines as of April 1st:

History: Patrick l. (H. Tech); Greg B. (SJHS); Adithya K. (H. Tech); Rohan K. (H. Tech); Dan B. (SJHS); David S. (Livingston); Alex P. (SHP);

Science: Sean M. (H. Tech); Rohan K. (H. Tech);

Literature: Shristi S. (H. Tech); Stephen B. (H. Tech); Adithya K. (H. Tech);

Humanities: Shristi S. (H. Tech); Stephen B. (H. Tech); Greg B. (SJHS);

I would like to sign up for the science tryout, and Srishti Srivastava would like to sign up for literature and humanities.

Also, if someone wins two categories, would we only bring 5 people or would we pick a second place winner from one of the categories?

Last year several very gifted 2nd place players not only received invites, they also played commendably, so I see no reason not to invite 2nd place players if for some reason one or more of the winners in head to competitions cannot ultimately make it, for whatever reason.

I'm interested in trying out for history, we may have one player who's interested in the humanities. Looking forward to this!

A general NASAT related question:

What would be the proper procedure if one of the top two vote getters chooses NOT to go? Would it pass on to the next person on the All Star Team or would it go to a tryout process?

Edit: Apologies for double posting.

This happened last year when the 2nd place vote-getter could not go due to NASAT's conflict with his graduation. So, his place was taken by Rohan, who finished 3rd in the All State voting, and that is what we will do this year as well if necessary.

Try-outs are now less than 4 weeks away and we only have a handful of registered competitors, mostly from the very gifted High Tech teams!

Where is everyone else? Do not be shy, and do not be afraid to represent your school in what should be a state wide competition. So, register as soon as you can and register for up to 2 disciplines, doubling your chances to represent NJ at NASAT.

Also, all should know that Jack Mehr of SJHS and Shravan Balaji of EB have already earned 2 of the 6 seats on the team by virtue of finishing 1st and 2nd in the All State balloting held at Livingston on March 15th, so they may NOT sign up for these NASAT competitions.

So---sign up ASAP. High Tech is terrific, but do you really want to allow its players to win their seats by default, virtually without any competition? :-)

Obviously, this is not meant as an insult to High Tech---quite the opposite---but as a challenge to everyone else out there. So, if you are game, sign up ASAP!

Any more students who would like to compete for a NASAT seat? April 12th will be here before we know it, and so far only 10 students have registered from only 3 schools or so. Even if you think you might have difficulty actually going to NASAT, for whatever reason, by competing you keep your options open and you compel whoever wins a seat to earn it through the most challenging competition possible. So, feel free to register here, helping NJ to find its best players.

Sorry to double-post, but 3 players have just dropped from the NASAT try-outs, leaving 7 students to compete for 4 seats. Currently, 4 are registered to compete for History, 2 for Science, 3 for Lit and 3 for Humanities.

Is there no one else in NJ interested in joining these competitions? We have many good teams and players in NJ, so this small sample of competitors does surprise. But it is what it is--- or is it?

Here are the results of the NASAT competitions held after the St. Joe's Mirror of GSAC XXI:

Rohan from High Tech won the History seat; Stephen from High Tech won the Literature seat; Shristi from High Tech won the Humanities seat, and Sean from High Tech earned the Science seat. So, a clean sweep for our very gifted friends from High Tech.

When adding our first and second place finishers in the Player of the Year voting, Jack from SJHS and Shravan from EB, these are the 6 representatives for the 2014 NJ NASAT Team going to Ohio State in June. Congratulations to all.
