SCOP Novice @ Bloomington (IL) 2013 (10/19/13)

Post by thrillhouse »

First off, thank you to all the staff that made the tourney possible. Moderators Alston Boyd, Mike Sorice (Champaign Centennial), Debbie Voorhees, Evan Johnson, Sam Emmerson, Maddy Waugh, Ben Gesell, Stae Schipper-Reyes, and Elliot Lusk, as well as Jim Almeda, Ben Pounds, and Brian Hitchens really made the day go smoothly. And big props to our statisticians Aaron Schneider, Apurva Paranjape, and Jared Schuh, and to NHS volunteers as well. Without all of you, the tourney would have not run as well as it did.

We had a heck of a tournament here in Corn Country; in fact, it was so good that we decided to play two extra rounds. The bottom line is that we just cannot get enough SB in central Illinois.

With a three-way tie for first with 8 - 1 records, Glenwood A, Centennial, and Bloomington A faced off in a circle of death. Bloomington was the top scorer of the three, so Chatham-Glenwood played Champaign Centennial for third place and a spot in the championship. Centennial emerged victorious in the grudge match, twice avenging an earlier loss to Glenwood in the prelims. Bloomington, though, exacted its revenge by defeating the Chargers in the rematch after losing to Centennial earlier. After being nearly tied at half in a back-and-forth battle of two very evenly matched teams, BHS pulled away in the second half. Thank you to all the teams that played, and especially to Glenwood, Centennial, and Bloomington for sticking it out til the end. It was a long day, but well worth it.

We had a great mix of Novice, from F - Sr, at BHS this year, and I was really happy some teams that had not been at Novice before decided to come. This is such a great meet to prepare newer and younger players for the rest of high school SB, and it serves as a wonderful transition to HS for those newbies still accustomed to IESA format.

And of course, thanks to Jonah for posting the stats so quickly!
