2013 Autumn Classic at University of Michigan

Post by happycy » Tue Sep 17, 2013 10:34 am

Hello,

It's that time of year again! Michigan Academic Competitions is pleased to invite your team to the 2013 Autumn Classic to be held on Saturday, December 7,2013, on the Central Campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Since 1995, Michigan Academic Competitions has hosted several tournaments for high schools throughout the state of Michigan. This year's Autumn Classic promises more of the same, as we hope to draw some of the finest schools from throughout the region and beyond. This event will be run with questions provided by NAQT (IS-130). As a result, teams entering the 2013 Autumn Classic will be able to qualify for the 2014 NAQT High School Championship.

Each match will consist of two 9-minute halves or 24 tossup questions, whichever comes first. Players who first answer a question correctly will be rewarded with points and a chance for the entire team to answer bonus questions, all of which are worth a maximum of 30 points. Questions come from all areas: science, math, history and government, literature, current events, geography, popular culture, fine arts, sports, mythology and religion, social science, and general knowledge, with the academic areas heavily emphasized.

The tournament schedule will incorporate a pooled round robin for preliminary play. We guarantee that each team will play a minimum of six matches (probably at least seven), with the top teams playing in either a double or single elimination bracket, depending on staff, to determine the tournament champion. Our goal is that each team plays as many matches as possible. We will also attempt to ensure that teams from the same school will not play each other during the preliminary rounds.

This tournament follows NAQT rules, which can be found in full at http://naqt.com/rules.html.

We will begin registration at 8:15 a.m. and hold a mandatory meeting for players and coaches at 8:45 a.m. Rounds will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue through the morning and early afternoon with a lunch break around 1:00 p.m. Playoffs and a brief awards ceremony will follow, and we expect to finish no later than 6:00 p.m.

The tournament will be held at Mason Hall on the University of Michigan’s Central Campus, just like in years past. More specifics on this will be sent out as the tournament date approaches.

Registration for this event will be limited to 32 high school teams, and we will initially allow each school to register only 2 teams. All other teams from that school will be placed on a wait list, which will be used to complete the tournament field on a first-come, first-served basis after the registration deadline of November 29, 2013. Teams may consist of an unlimited number of players, only four of whom may play at once. It is our hope, however, that all the students attending the tournament will receive a good deal of playing time. We will accept teams on a first-come basis until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013, unless we first reach the tournament maximum (if this happens, we will place these teams on a waiting list).

To register, send an e-mail to [email protected] that includes your name, school, number of teams, number of buzzers you can bring, a phone number, and a confirmation e-mail address. Please note that the registration forms on the team website are no longer valid. If your registration e-mail does not include ALL of this information, you will not be officially registered and thus will not be guaranteed a spot in the field.

Fees
First team from a school $90
Each additional team from a school $70

For US high schools, $ is USD. For Canadian high schools, $ is your choice of CAD or USD.

Discounts
Discount for a fully functional buzzer system (max 2 per school) -$10
Early bird discount for registering by 5:00 PM, November 11 -$5/team

Hello,

Our goal is a 40 team field but right now we are limited by the number of staffers we can get. Staffers will get free bagels and juice for breakfast, as well as free lunch. If any team can bring a reader/scorekeeper, please email us.

Hello All,

It is to my regret to inform you that Michigan Academic Competitions has decided not to expand the tournament field for Autumn Classic and keep the cap at 32 teams.

This year, more teams than we've witnessed historically have expressed interest in our tournament. However, due to the unfortunate timing of the tournament in accordance to university exam schedules, we have been unable to find enough competent staffers.

Therefore, we feel that in order to preserve the quality of the tournament for those who have expressed interest early on, we must make a sacrifice on the number of teams we allow to compete.

Here is the final list of teams that will have a spot in the tournament field:

Novi (2)
DCC (2)
Brighton (2)
Olmsted Falls (2)
Bay City Western (1)
University Liggett (2)
Kent City HS (1)
Skyline (1)
Walled Lake Central (1)
Notre Dame Prep (1)
Culver (2)
Utica Academy (1)
DCD (2)
Gross Pointe North (2)
Redford Thurston (2)
Cranbrook-Kingswood (2)
Quincy (1)
U of D Jesuit (2)
St. Mary Cathedral (1)
Ottawa Hills (2)

If you are currently registered but need to drop from the tournament, please let me know as soon as possible since there are a lot of teams on the wait-list who would like to participate. Thank you.

The morning rounds were run in a round robin format and the afternoon play-offs were run as a double elimination. DCC B won against Olmsted Falls A to play DCC A in the first round of the advantage final. DCC B won against DCC A in the first round of the advantage final, but we had to stop at this point since we were short one packet. The final team standings based on the playoff rounds are as follows:

1. DCC B
2. DCC A
3. Olmsted Falls A
4. Troy A

Full stats for the morning rounds can be found here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... s/morning/
Full stats for the afternoon rounds can be found here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /playoffs/

Thank you to all the teams who participated today. We hope to see you again next year!
