Hello--I expect we'll get things going early December. If anyone wants to express interest right now I will gladly compile a list; I just don't want to get too detailed for a bit because I don't know what building we'll be in yet, how many rooms, size of field we can handle, who my volunteers are, etc. Thanks very much for your interest!

Hello everyone--
Registration for CT INV V is now open. Please send an email to rpirrie<at>eosmith<dot>org, indicating number of teams/buzzers/helpers. I am going to set a very flexible 24 teams as our tournament size; we can expand as necessary but registering soon will give us a better sense of how many rooms to reserve.

This is the fifth annual tournament with the purpose of promoting quiz bowl in southern New England. New England teams are strongly encouraged to attend.
Registration will begin at 8:30 AM with the first round beginning at 9:30 AM. Though it is difficult to know exactly when the tournament will end, it is safe to assume sometime in the early evening around 5 or 6 PM.

Registration information for the tournament is as follows:

Base fee, first team: $70
Additional teams: $60
Working buzzer system: -$5 each
Moderator: -$5 each

Please make checks payable to: E. O. Smith Academic Quiz Bowl. Please plan to pay on arrival at the tournament.

When you send me an email please put CT INV V in the subject line, which will make it easier to sort through the responses. If you'd like a copy of the registration form ahead of time I can send one to you; just let me know. Any questions about the tournament can be asked here on the forum, but you should also feel free to drop me a line.
We will be streamlining things this year by going with electronic packets and experienced readers. We may go with electronic score sheets; more on that as we get closer to the date.

Don't forget--the whole shindig happens 2/22/14 at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. Should be a lot of fun! Hope to see you all there!

Right now I'm too used to the NY/NJ tournaments that can have 36 teams within 24 hours.

Hello all--
I have been told that 2/22 is a bad date for MA because everyone will be on vacation. I am seriously thinking about switching the date to 3/1 but I need input on this soon. Is there any reason anyone can think of that we can't do this on 3/1? Thanks.

March 1st is the same day as Science Bowl, which is an extremely popular event attracting at least 24 schools in the area.

Hello—

After a bit of soul searching and a lot of data gathering (thank you to those who chimed in), I have decided to stay with the original date of 2/22/14 for CT INV V. I know this is somewhat disappointing for MA teams, but the thing that tipped the balance is the timing of UConn Science Bowl. It is on March 1st, and most of my players would be unavailable to staff our event. In short, having CT INV on March 1st would mean an understaffed, choppy tournament.

I would still strongly encourage MA teams/schools to send as many teams as you can comfortably pull together. That having been said, would everyone reading this message please let me know if it causes them to change their plans? I believe there are some who said “Yes we are coming” based on a March 1st date. Let me reiterate:

CT INV V will be held on February 22nd, 2014.

But, please, everyone who can come, we’d love to have you! Should be a lot of fun!

Hello folks--
I will be posting the current field soon, but there has been confusion over the date. I have sent out a registration form to all interested parties and will assemble the list when the registrations start coming in. Drop me a line at rpirrie<at>eosmith<dot>org and I will send you a form. Don't forget, we will be holding CT INV V on February 22nd 2014. Hope to see you there!

Hello--
The field has finally been posted! Please have a look, and send me any corrections. If you are from CT, please have a look at the CT state championship as well...

http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =1&t=15267

It's the first ever state championship, and we CT folks definitely want to see all the CT teams there!

Acton Boxborough would like to send 1 team, and we can bring definitely 1, possibly 2 buzzer systems.
We would like to purchase the set if that is available.

Hello everyone--
CT INV V has just been given PACE Platinum status, which means that the top 25% of teams in the tournament (rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for the PACE national high school quizbowl championship, May 24-25th at the Hyatt Regency Reston outside of Washington, D.C. (yes I did just cut and paste from the email they sent me).
By the way, I have advertised this tourney as being for the promotion of Southern New England quiz bowl, but that doesn't mean others can't sign up. I remember Hanover coming down in years past, and we have Schuylerville making its first appearance.
The field is currently at 16, but I'd like to cap it at 24. Send in those registrations soon! Don't delay, register today!

Great! Drop me a line at rpirrie<at>eosmith<dot>org and I'll send you a registration form. You will go in the list as 2/?/?, but I will change that if you send me info on buzzers and moderators. Thanks and welcome aboard.

Hello everyone--20 teams signed up, 4 slots to go. I might be able to expand but I can't guarantee--we are using UConn rooms, which we have to book in advance. Sign up soon!

By the way, things aren't looking good on buzzers--we have 9 sets for 12 matches. Invest in some inexpensive buzzers and you'll have them paid off in about 10 - 20 tourneys (based on fee discount of $10 - $20). Anyone else who can scrum up an extra set let me know!

Hey folks--
Looks like the field is full at 24 (and the buzzer crisis has been solved). If anyone else would like to sign up, I can create a waitlist. More news will be posted here and sent out to participants this weekend. Cheers!

Yes, please be aware--the email recently sent out contains all the info needed to get you here ready to play. Due to problems in securing rooms at UConn, the tourney is being held at E. O. Smith High School, 1235 Storrs Road, Storrs CT (I apologize for any confusion this may have caused). Please let me know if you need me to re-send the informational email. See you all tomorrow!

Acton-Boxborough A won the tournament and Darien B finished 2nd. Victor Pavao was the highest scorer. That's all I really know.

Indeed, Acton-Boxborough took the big dog, Darien B took the little dog. Stats ASAP--check back in 24 hours. Thanks to everyone who came out for a great tournament, and thanks especially to the coaches who volunteered to read so we could free up players to keep the brackets even!
