Hi there! I'm Fred Morlan. You may know me from such works as "Entirely Too Self-Pleased to Not Be Running the Forums Any More" and "Get Confident, Stupid!" I have a special opportunity I'd like to discuss with you.

Have you ever thought to yourself, "gee, self, I'd really like to see fairly accurate lists of high school quiz bowl teams ranked in terms of ability as a pleasing distraction on my path to the grave, but I really don't want to deal with typing all of these letters and periods"? Well, do I have the product to offer you! It's www.hsqbrank.com! It offers you all the fun of a barely formatted list of 50 high school teams, of which you may have actually seen two play, and throws in tons of time saved! If you're really in a hurry, you don't even need the "www." part! We've also thrown in the top 10 middle school teams, because in no way will that be a poor decision! And it won't even ruin a romantic cruise.

Hey all - I really don't mind being asked questions about how the rankings work, but I would prefer that it not really be cover for a question of "why did you mortally wound us by (choose one: "leaving us out of the rankings"/"ranking us so low, when low is like, I dunno, 28th or whatever"/"rank us below someone we beat once in a game")?"

It's October. You know what the rankings mean in October? Not a whole lot. If you get in them, it means you're at least a good team. If you don't, guess what? It's October. You may get in later. You may not. Last year I had over 2000 unique high schools ranked.

I'd really prefer if this thread or Twitter were where questions were posed. If you would rather make it private, you can email me at [email protected].

Again, this is a hobby I pursue solely for the benefit of the game I love and so motivated young students can benefit from their hard work. I will make mistakes, and if you think I've made one, please let me know and I'll look at it when I can.

I am currently unable to do a proper round of PR for this, but I'd like to remind everyone that you're more than welcome to do PR with this. Tell your principal, your board of education, your local newspaper, your school newspaper, any kind of booster group, etc.

So, because of a hilarious series of accidents (actually, just one big accident, by someone other than me), this is going to be delayed by a few days probably because I get bonus block testing. I'll try to get them up before Saturday, but regardless I think there'll be at least one update by, like, next Mondayish.

I don't have any stake in this, but this could be a blessing in terms of accuracy since LIFT occurs Saturday, giving some updated statistics for a slew of metro NYC teams that have a good shot of cracking Top 50/Top 100.

Just wondering...are the 2013-2013 stat adjustments the ones for this season? Because HFT (to me at least) seemed harder than IS but the ppb adjustment is -0.29 on that adjustment list.

Those are from last year. I'm currently using them for this year until I have enough IS set info to do adjustment calculations.

I don't know, because I'm running a tournament this Saturday. If they come out before Saturday and I'm feeling feisty, there might be another update early next week. More likely, it won't be until the middle of December.

Oh, teams that had been ranked off the preseason rankings are no longer ranked off those expectations but by actual performances (or lack thereof).

I'm now up to 1160 unique team IDs in my stat file, and I'm waiting on a bunch of IHSSBCA Kickoffs. Last year I had a total of 2173 unique IDs.

I made a correction because some CA stats that I thought came from an IS set actually came from an A set. Apologies for the mistake; it's been corrected.

California Cup is a series of tournaments, and the individual tournaments in the California Cup series that were played so far are Beartolt Brecht Memorial and California Cup #2 (those are the names that should show up on the database).

This was just a failure to state which one was varsity & which was JV.

I'll announce a bonus TOP ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY tomorrow once I get the post formatted. I'll only be sending letters to the top 100 off of it, because I have to draw the line somewhere. (I should note that I probably won't go to 150 again until the end of the season).

My plan is to send letters to the principals of the top 100 teams (I have to do a cut off somewhere). As noted in the other thread, if, for any reason, your team is in the top 100 and I shouldn't contact your principal, let me know by Sunday and I'll skip you. I'll try to send everything out Monday.

Also, you missed the BAAL Quizbowl Revolution that Shook Portugal and the BAAL Horace, which are at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/1714 and http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/1938 respectively, but if you want to exclude the QRtSP, because we used like three different sets that tournament, that should be fine.

I just mailed letters to all the principals of the top 150 teams except for those whose ZIP codes start with a 0 (thanks, mail merge) or those who are outside of the U.S. border (I wanted to make sure that I had the addresses right, but I also had to run out to the mailperson before she left). The rest will be out tomorrow. I hope this helps some people out!
