The Quizbowl Resource Center

The University of Kentucky’s Quiz Bowl Team is pleased to announce the University of Kentucky Fall Championship, a high school quiz bowl tournament we are hosting on our campus in Lexington, Kentucky on November 16th, 2013. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. in the White Hall Classroom Building and should conclude no later than 5 p.m. Registration will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

We will be using the questions written for the 2013 Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl.

The tournament will consist of preliminary rounds of round robins between small groups of teams, which will then be re-bracketed into groups of similar performance in the preliminary rounds. We will do everything we can to guarantee each team at least seven games of play.

Each match will consist of 20 tossups and 20 bonuses. Teams may be made up of up to six players. Four players may play at a time for a team. Teams with less than four players are allowed. Once a player is assigned to a team’s roster at the start of the tournament, those players cannot be moved between teams.

The top four teams will receive plaques or trophies for their performance. We will also recognize the highest scoring individual players. The University of Kentucky Spring Championship will also pursue affiliation as a qualifying tournament for the 2014 PACE NSC.

Allison Murner will be the Tournament Director and Alec Kamas will be the Assistant Tournament Director.

We are going to limit our field to 24 teams at first. This is to ensure we have enough moderators to support our field. As we recruit more staff, we will expand the field as we are able to. Until then, we will have a waitlist, from which teams will be admitted into the field. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

Entry fees

• The base fee is $80/team.
• The minimum fee $40/team.
• There is a $5 discount per working buzzer system
• There is a $10 discount for traveling over 200 miles.
• There is a $15 discount for each experienced moderator you can provide for the tournament; before claiming this discount, please contact us.
• If your team has not played an independent pyramidal tournament between September 1, 2010 and September 1, 2013, you automatically qualify for the minimum entry fee of $40.

So the tournament's been announced for just over a week, and we've already had 7 registrations. We are working on recruiting more staffers so we can expand the field, but we have also emailed over 600 schools and are working on contacting a few more.

Basically, you should register as soon as you can.

We're up to 16 teams in the field with the registration of two Detroit Catholic Central teams. We have teams from five states right now!

We're also exploring the possibility of field expansion up to 36 teams, but we can't guarantee it at this point!

So, we're officially back down to one spot available in the field, but we are planning on expanding to 36 teams as soon as we get sufficient staff. So, you should definitely register! We're really excited about our field.

We're also discussing the possibility of expanding to a higher field number, though that would require drastic tournament format changes and as such may not actually happen.

We have officially expanded our field limit to 36 and welcome Carbondale to the field, if they're able to make it in the end.

Danville is planning to bring 2 teams.

Danville's in with two teams and Owensboro registered one team! We currently have 3 spots left.

We're at 35 teams now, so one spot is available. First come, first serve.

That puts us at 36 teams! We are looking at possibilities for field expansion, so please keep considering attending if you already are (and if you aren't, check out this field!). Also, staffers are welcomed warmly.

The field won't expand, if we do decide to do it, until late September at the earliest.

We lost a Dorman team, but added Olmsted Falls from Ohio. We also added four teams from Oak Ridge and Paul G. Blazer to our waitlist!

We've added 1 team from Hallsville in Missouri and two teams from Johnson Central in Kentucky to the waitlist.

Gatton Academy had to drop out, which lets Oak Ridge A into the field. Hurlay A & B from Virginia join the waitlist.

And we just lost Olmsted Falls as well, so Oak Ridge B is in the field as well.

After discussion with the team, we will be lifting this tournament's field cap to 48 teams. We will be accomplishing this by implementing an Illinois-style field split into two divisions; there will be no formal criteria for this split, but we intended for one division to contain the stronger teams that would do well at national championships and a second division for teams that are less experience or competitive. We will be notifying teams of this change via email in the next 24 hours and start talking with people about what division they would be best served to play in. Assignment of a team to a certain division is ultimately at the discretion of the tournament director.

As of right now we have 4 open spots (though Dunbar may be claiming one or two of those). If you enjoy fun tournaments, sign up for this one!

Lafayette B has claimed our last spot as of now. Our field is currently full.

We're pleased to announce that this tournament has been platinum certified for the PACE NSC! That is the highest level of certification available to high school tournaments from PACE.

The top 25% of teams in our "national" bracket qualify for the PACE NSC (currently, this looks like it will be about 7 teams, though final team counts will obviously determine the exact number). Any team that qualifies at our tournament will be able to register for the NSC immediately (the actual deadline is November 1, but for obvious reasons, that doesn't apply here).

In what we anticipate to be our final field expansion, we went to 52 teams so we could put together an ideal schedule for both brackets. Oldham County A and three Western Hills teams are now in the field.

We have two open spots in the tournament. I think we'll be able to accommodate teams of any strength, so don't worry too much about the field split and fitting in there!

Detroit Catholic Central C has registered for the national bracket. We still have one open spot available, in either bracket.

The Piarist School has registered, putting us back at a full field.

We've had a couple of teams drop, so one spot is open. We can accommodate a team in either division.
