2013 NAQT New Jersey State Championship at Princeton 4/20/13

Princeton Quiz Bowl would like to announce the NAQT NJ State Championship to be held on the Princeton University campus on April 20th, 2013. The tournament will take place as usual in McCosh Hall, and we will announce the full schedule closer to the tournament date.

Fees:
$80 for the first team from a school.
$70 for each additional team
-$10 Discount per Buzzer System
Discount capped at $30.

We have now been certified Gold by PACE, so the top 20% of the field will receive a bit to the PACE NSC on June 8-9 at the University of Maryland.

We have 29 teams signed up. There will be a tentative cap at 32 teams, but I may be able to reserve more rooms if there is enough interest. The current field is as follows:

Please arrive between 8 and 8:45 am to McCosh Hall Room 10 to register. Personal vehicles can park in Lot 23 and buses in Lot 20. Both lots are just off of Elm Dr (see map here: http://etcweb.princeton.edu/pumap/#5138; Lot 20 is the upper part of Lot 32 in this map). I recommend you drop off students before parking, because the parking lots are a bit of a walk. We hope to start the preliminary rounds just after 9 am. Lunch will be approximately 1-2 pm, after which we will have playoffs. We should be done by 4:30.

High Tech A beat Mountain Lakes A (which had its whole A team together for an IS set for the first time all year) in the championship. High Tech B played Ridgewood A for 3rd, don't know who won.

Jack Mehr of St. Joseph's won player of the year, rest of first team was Roey from Ranney, JP from Seton Hall, and Rohan from High Tech.

In terms of NASAT:
Jack of St. Joseph's beat Esther from Ridgewood in Literature in sudden death.
Humanities was won by Kara of Ridgewood.
Science was won by Kevin of High Tech very, very convincingly.
Jack from St. Joseph's also won History, but since he had already qualified for NASAT (two times over, even), there had to be sudden death for the NASAT History spot. Ben from Ridgewood beat Patrick from High Tech on the second sudden death question.

Congrats to High Tech, Mountain Lakes and Ridgewood for their excellent performances at States yesterday.

Thanks also to Princeton for hosting AND to Dennis London for allowing us to use Princeton's rooms for the NASAT competitions after States were over.

As for the NASAT results, congratulations to Kevin in Science, Esther in Literature, Kara in the Humanities and Ben in History, as well as to Jack and Roey for claiming the two Generalist seats. Since Roey cannot go, the 2nd seat has been offered to JP of Seton Hall, and if he cannot accept it, Rohan, the final member of our 1st Team All New Jersey Squad, will naturally be offered the seat.

No matter what happens with regard to the 6th seat on the team, NJ clearly has a talented squad which should represent NJ well at NASAT. And if for some reason our remaining First Team All State Players cannot come, an effort will be made to offer another worthy and gifted NJ player the opportunity and the honor of representing NJ at NASAT. And this effort will begin with those players who earned 2nd Team All State Honors.

One final comment: The interest and talent at the NASAT competitions yesterday was both passionate and broad based. For this reason I recommend that next year we make NASAT competitions a regular part of our Spring schedule, some time in March or April, and make it an all day affair. This way we can allow students to compete for all four seats, have time to engage in longer preliminaries and Championship playoffs, and, in addition, find the time to procure and to edit several pristine and truly challenging sets so that no one can doubt that we did our best to find NJ's very best specialists to add to its top two generalists as voted upon by all the coaches/teams in attendance. We tried our best yesterday, but in retrospect I think an all day affair placed annually on the calendar would go a long way in better guaranteeing that we gave all of our aspiring NASAT competitors in the future the best chance to demonstrate their talents in every specialist discipline. And by placing this competition on the annual calendar it will give everyone time to prepare for it and to place it on their must go to events each year. And one predictable consequence of such an annual event will be this: we will know that we made the best effort to send Jersey's best team to Nationals and that we did it in the fairest and most transparent way possible.

High Tech B has already qualified and registered for HSNCT; it's not the biggest deal if they qualify here. But, considering how they placed higher than two teams which did qualify, I think the results speak for themselves.
