March Madness Tournament @ MSU - March 16

Post by Yeah, that's a thing »

Greetings, I'm glad to announce Michigan State's annual March Madness Invitational Tournament.

We will be using NAQT's IS-124.

Questions will follow standard NAQT rules, without timed halves. Full rules can be found at http://www.naqt.com/rules.html

We will be placing teams into brackets and reseeding teams into playoff brackets based on performance in the prelims. This will allow all teams to play all day.

We will initially be limiting registration to 24 teams and expand the field if there is demand and we have enough staff to be able to do so. We will initially allow each school to register only 2 teams; if you'd like to bring more than 2, please let us know and we will add them to the field if space permits.

We plan on holding the tournament in Wells Hall on the Michigan State campus in East Lansing and starting around 9:00 AM. Teams are asked to arrive by 8:30 to register. Full logistical information will be provided to registered teams before the tournament.

The tournament fees are as following:
$70 - first team
$60 - second team from a school and on
-$10 - new to quizbowl (no teams from your school have attended a pyramidal quizbowl tournament in the last two academic years, please let us know if you qualify for this)
-$10 - WORKING buzzer system (at least four players on each side)
-$10 - Travel over 100 miles one way, as determined by Google maps
-$10 - Competent moderator (let us know if you would like to claim this discount and we will tell you if it is needed)
(Minimum fee per team: $30)

We prefer payment by cash or check made out to "MSU Academic Competition Club" on the day of the tournament; if your school requires you to mail payment ahead of the tournament, please contact us and we can give you our mailing address. If you will not be able to pay until after the tournament, please let us know ahead of time.

Please E-mail us at [email protected] to register or if you have any questions.

We hope to see you on March 16th!

The field is now full, but will almost certainly expand once we can guarantee enough staff.

We've expanded the field to 30 teams, and are considering expanding to 36. The field will be updated to reflect this shortly.

We're also pleased to announce that we've been granted Platinum Certification by PACE, meaning that the top 25% of teams will qualify for the NSC to be held in June in College Park, Maryland.

DCC A defeated DCC B in the first game of a final in which they held the advantage. Summit Academy took third, with Troy A rounding out the superplayoffs. Prelim stats are available here; full stats will be posted shortly.
