This is the announcement for MSU's first tournament of 2013, the Tenth Annual Rube Goldberg Invitational.
The tournament will be using questions provided by NAQT, namely set IS-122. Questions will follow NAQT rules, meaning that they consist of tossups followed by three part bonuses. The full rules can be found at http://www.naqt.com/rules.html, please note that we will not be using timing.
We plan on placing teams into brackets and reseeding teams into their playoff brackets based on performance in initial brackets. This will allow all teams to play all day.
We will initially be limiting registration to 24 teams and expand the field if there is demand and we have enough staff to be able to do so. We will initially allow each school to register only 2 teams; if you'd like to bring more than 2, please let us know and we will add them to the field if space permits.
We plan on holding the tournament in Wells Hall on the Michigan State campus in East Lansing and starting around 9:00 AM; thus, teams are asked to arrive at 8:30. Full logistical information will be provided to registered teams before the tournament.
The tournament fees follow:
$70 - first team
$60 - second team from a school and on
-$10 - new to quizbowl (no teams from your school have attended a pyramidal quizbowl tournament in the last two academic years, please let us know if you qualify for this)
-$10 - WORKING buzzer system (at least four players on each side)
-$10 - Travel over 100 miles one way, as determined by Google maps
-$10 - Competent moderator (let us know if you would like to claim this discount and we will tell you if it is needed)
(Minimum fee per team: $30)
We prefer payment by cash or check made out to "MSU Academic Competition Club" on the day of the tournament; if your school requires you to mail payment ahead of the tournament, please contact us and we can give you our mailing address. If you will not be able to pay until after the tournament, please let us know ahead of time.
We will also be hosting tryouts for the 2013 National All-Star Academic Tournament after the tournament. The NASAT, to be held June 15-16 at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, will feature teams made up of the best players in many states. These tryouts will be conducted using collegiate questions written by the University of Pennsylvania, and the composition of a team will be decided by a committee including people knowledgeable in quizbowl from various institutions in the state. Tryouts may be conducted either Saturday after the conclusion of the regular tournament or Sunday. If you have any students who are interested in trying out, please let us know their names and whether they would prefer tryouts to be held on Saturday evening or Sunday as soon as possible.
Please E-mail us to register or if you have any questions. We hope to see you on January 19th.
