Midwest Championship & Wildcat @ Northwestern (5/18-5/19/13)

Post by Dan-Don »

Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois will host Midwest Championship 2013 on May 18, 2013, followed by Wildcat XV on May 19, 2013. I will be the Tournament Director. To register, you must fill out this form.

Midwest Championship, which is intended as a warm-up for teams attending the 2013 NAQT HSNCT, will again use the NAQT's Division II ICT set. Wildcat, which is intended as a warm-up for teams attending the 2013 PACE NSC, will again use Hunter College High School's soon-to-be-announced Prison Bowl set. Schools need not be qualified for the HSNCT or NSC to register for Midwest Championship or Wildcat. Schools can earn a discount by registering for both tournaments.

All normal eligibility rules apply. Midwest Championship 2013 will use all intercollegiate NAQT rules, and Wildcat will use all collegiate ACF rules. The field for each tournament is currently capped at 18 teams.

Midwest Championship registered field (closed): Belvidere North, Culver, Dorman x2, Fenton, Loyola, Machiavelli Academy, Northmont, Rockford Auburn x2, Saint Joseph, Sidney

Wildcat registered field (closed): Culver, Dorman x2, Fenton, Loyola, Machiavelli Academy, Northmont, Rockford Auburn, Saint Joseph, Sidney, Stevenson

To register, you must fill out this form.

Dorman SC will bring at least one team to this event, perhaps two.

You should obviously count on IMSA A and B being there.

So far the field is shaping up great, but we have no Illinois teams. I can only guarantee 10 more spots, so register today.

Right now I'm going to have to close both fields until we can secure more moderators for Saturday. If you're a team that hasn't registered yet and can provide a moderator or moderators for Saturday, please let me know, as that would help the situation a lot. I've upped the staffer discount to $40 for Saturday.

Also, if you aren't attending the tournament, please consider volunteering to moderate. This is going to be a great, competitive event.

Locking out the second team to (unofficially) register because you retroactively decided to add a new registration requirement and lower the field size is a jank move. Is this tournament going to continue to be jank, or is it going to fix itself?

The original announcement post was very clear about how to register for this tournament. We have a small team and thus a limited number of in-house staffers. The number of outside moderators we have attracted is lower than it was for last year's event. Therefore I have substantially increased the moderators discount. I have not retroactively added a registration requirement according to any definition of those words. The field size will increase to the original 18 teams if we can get more moderators. Until then, teams that have not registered as instructed will continue to not be in the field.

So a non-timed tournament that can't staff more than 6 rooms is worth $80 now?

EDIT: You should update the Google form -- that $40 discount is enticing, but it only says $15 on the form.

in on these shenanigans wrote:So a non-timed tournament that can't staff more than 6 rooms is worth $80 now?
Given the eliteness of the field and the financial needs of Northwestern Quizbowl, the $80 base fee for Wildcat will not decrease. Additionally, at this time there is not a need to staff more than 6 rooms for Wildcat, as there are zero teams on the wait list and every team that has followed the registration instructions for Wildcat a) has gotten a spot in the field and b) is paying less than $80 to attend. Finally, last year's Wildcat, which was a five-room tournament with a base fee of $80, was praised, and no concerns were raised with regards to the field size or the registration fee.

I hope that raising the Midwest Championship moderator discount to $40 will have the effect of securing more outside moderators for Saturday and therefore the effect of freeing up more in-house staff for Wildcat on Sunday.

We're down to 13 teams for Midwest Championship and 11 teams for Wildcat. I'm opening open up one more spot in each tournament so we can have 14 and 12 teams. These spots will go to the first team that fills out the registration form.

Hello,
For IMSA A, Saieesh Rao actually never played a game, as he was not there. I also played all 11 matches, but it seems that my stats from those rounds are missing. I can give you the stores that I have:
Round 9: 4 10 1 -5 total 35
Round 10: 5 10 1 -5 total 45
Round 11: 5 10 3 -5 total 35

Actually, it's interesting that IMSA was included in the stats at all, considering that it did not attend this tournament. The TD should correct this immediately.

Thanks for two well run tournaments. It's nice to have the opportunity to play such a talented field, especially right before nationals.

Hope everyone enjoyed the set! Congrats to Loyola for their victory. This is the last mirror of Prison Bowl, so the set should show up on the archives shortly. If you're interested in discussing the set or urgently want to see a question, feel free to join our discussion group under the Usergroups tab in User Control Panel.

I'm not missing your stats from those rounds--I just have your stats wrong. I have you as 5/1 in Round 9, 2/2 in Round 10, and 3/1 in Round 11. This probably means that the scorekeeper misattributed some of your tossups to other players on your team, but I would need to know your teammates' correct statlines from those rounds in order to rectify the error.

It doesn't matter that much, but in interest of accuracy, Joe Burke (12) did not play this tournament and his two games should be credited to Rosie Frehe (12) who is listed in the stats as "Rosy". She didn't get any tossups either way.
