Metro-NYC NAQT State Championship (4/14/12)

Post by etakuyak »

The Metro-NYC NAQT State Championship at Scarsdale HS

The Scarsdale High School Quizbowl Team is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 2012 Metro-NYC NAQT State Championship on Saturday, April 14.

To register, please email Evan Kratzer at [email protected] saying how many teams, buzzers, moderators you can bring, and a cellphone number that can be used to contact you on the date of the tournament if necessary.

There is a discount for bringing moderators, and we’d appreciate if teams could bring as many moderators as they can. Our team is rather young and does not have a large base of alumni to use as moderators.

Costs:
$70 for the first team;
$60 for each additional team;
-$10 for each buzzer system;
-$15 for each moderator.

Minimum payment of $40 per team

Payment with cash or checks will be accepted. Checks should be made payable to “SUFSD”. Registration costs will be collected on the day of the tournament.

Field Cap:
As this is our first time running NAQT states, the tournament will currently be capped at 18 teams. Should we find enough qualified volunteers, or if enough teams bring moderators, we will raise the cap.

Tournament Structure:
The tournament will be using NAQT packet IS-116, with untimed 20/20 rounds. We hope to guarantee either 8 or 10 rounds depending on the number of teams competing. We will use an either 5- or 6- team round robin structure in the morning. This will be followed by lunch and subsequently another round robin format with re-seeding based on the results off the morning’s round robin.

This tournament will be an opportunity to qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, which will be held on May 26-27 in Atlanta, Georgia. A guaranteed berth will be awarded to the top team that has not already qualified for HSNCT.

Arrival:
Scarsdale High School is in Westchester County north of NYC and can be reached easily by car or train. Should you be driving, the school’s address is either 1057 Post Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583 or 2 Brewster Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583. If you are taking the train, you can take the MTA Harlem line to Scarsdale station. Should you want to arrive this way, tell us at what time your train will be arriving and we will send cars to drive your teams to the school.

Registration will run from 8:00 AM – 8:45 AM, with Round 1 starting at approximately 9:00 AM in the school’s Little Theatre on the third floor. There will be people at each main entrance to the school on Post Road and on Brewster Road that will direct you to the Little Theatre in the morning.

Food:
Complimentary bagels and orange juice will be served in the Little Theater during registration from 8:00 to 8:45. At that time we will also taking orders and collecting money for pizza.

Contact Information:
If you have any questions about the tournament, contact Evan Kratzer at [email protected].

Please also keep the cellphone number, 1-914-574-1673, which you can contact in case you need help finding the school or if some other concern arise on the morning of the tournament.

Thank you and we hope to see you there!

If any teams that are interested and have not yet gotten back to me could start getting more concrete numbers to me sometime within the next week, that would be great. We want to start getting a general sense of what we need to prepare for. Numbers don't have to be final, but can be a prediction of how many teams, buzzers, and moderators will probably bring.

As a note relating to Passover: we will be serving matzah along with bagels at breakfast to account for dietary restrictions. Unfortunately we are not finding it possible to provide Passover-kosher food for lunch as well and so all should plan according. We apologize for any inconvenience this may bring. Pizza will still be available to be ordered to the school for lunch.

Sorry I've kept on posting here, but two things:

1. The field at the bottom of the tournament invite above is likely to be the final field for the tournament, save for any sudden changes.

2. Included in that field is a composite B team that we are running to have 12 teams and therefore two brackets of 6 teams for round robins. If anyone has objections to us doing so, feel free to say so below. Many of our A team members have been heavily involved in planning this tournament and so could not compete. Our main goal in fielding this team is to create an even number for round robins.

Ok, so NOW we have the final field above as Hunter C is not able to make it. Scarsdale will be fielding a team to fill out the round robins. Keep checking back as I will inevitably think of something else that I am forgetting to tell everyone sometime between now and the tournament.

So I was right about needing to post again. GNS is now bringing 3 teams, so NOW we should have the final field above. Once again, keep checking in for updates.

Never mind, again. GNS has pulled their C team so there will be a Scarsdale house team participating.

OK. SORRY WE WERE HAVING MISCOMMUNICATION. GNS IS SENDING 3 TEAMS AND THEREFORE SCARSDALE WILL NOT BE FIELDING A TEAM.

Great Neck South is fielding 3 teams. Sorry about the confusion, it's just difficult putting together teams over break, haha.

The Scarsdale team would like to thank everyone for coming to the tournament today. It was our first tournament and an exciting endeavor for our team. We would appreciate any feedback you may have so that we know what we may need to work on should we want to host a tournament next year.

On the topic of stats, they can be found here: http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/96 ... /combined/

If you see corrections, please let us know.

Also, Ardsley B has newly qualified to HSNCT after this tournament. Congratulations!

Thanks to Scarsdale for stepping up and hosting this; it was a great experience, and hopefully we'll see many more tournaments from them. The tournament ran a little slowly, but not more than expected from a team running their first-ever tournament. Suggestion to make the tournament run faster: clone Evan and have him moderate every game.

Congratulations to Great Neck South on their win, as well as the other top-bracket teams. Congratulations as well to Hastings, who participated in their first pyramidal all-subject tournament ever today, and placed remarkably well considering that and that they only had one member of their normal A team present.

In terms of stats corrections, I believe we scored 520 against Ardsley C, not 420. The player on Ardsley C's name is also spelled "Syku", not "Syka".

edit: Also, the Ardsley C-Bronx Sci A game should probably have 20 TUH, not 0

Also, if it is easy to do, it would be nice to have separated prelims/playoffs/combined stats, but I have no experience in these matters so I wouldn't know how to help you.

I will share Ryan's sentiments though - it was a very smoothly run tournament given that it was Scarsdale's first time, the only real issue if anything was that our reader (who was very often Brother Nigel from Kellenberg) was rather good and efficient, causing us to have to wait for other rooms, though this is clearly not Scarsdale's fault.

The only other issue was a downtime at the end of the tournament waiting for trophies to be distributed (though even then this was probably only ~15 minutes, which isn't too bad)

I greatly appreciated the availability of Matzah and other Kosher for Passover options available at breakfast, and to reiterate, overall it was a well run and enjoyable tournament.

Some more stat corrections....In Kellenberg's second game v. Bronx Sci. A, the "20" for TUH was not entered which will throw off some stats. Also it has Bronx scoring "119" in that game - an impossible score.

Well run tournament....always a pleasure to see a new school host. Thanks!

This same thing appears to have happened in Ardsley C vs. Bronx Sci A

I too would like to commend Scarsdale for running such an enjoyable and efficient tournament on fairly short notice. I'd also like to congratulate the other teams that participated, particularly Ardsley for playing so well all day.

Ok, results have been updated and can be seen at the link below. We also sent the data to NAQT, so that should come up on their website soon. Ryan, you actually underestimated as Ardsley A got 615 in that round.

PACE has just sent me confirmation that our tournament was Platinum Certified. As such, GNS, Ardsley, and Irvington's A teams are all now qualified for NSC as well. Congrats to all!
