Triton Spring II (5/19/2012)

Post by cchiego »

EDITED: Updated date to 19th instead of 12th.

The quizbowl team of UCSD is pleased to announce our second edition of Triton Spring, to be held on May 19th.

Questions: We will be mirroring Yale's BHSAT set, which has received good reviews in past iterations and is noted for its "often-entertaining" nature. See here for the details on the set.

Format: Depending on the field and room availability, we may be able to have a special division for teams planning to attend national championship tournaments to get more practice against each other. Otherwise, plan on a standard prelim/rebracketed playoff format of about 10 rounds.

Location: We expect to be able to host in our usual location EDIT and at our usual start time of 9 AM. Details will be sent to all registered team a week before the tournament.

To Register: Please send an email to ucsdqb at gmail.com indicating your interest. Include the number of teams, the number of buzzers you might bring, and any moderators or scorekeepers. In an effort to allow more schools the chance to compete, we will initially be limiting each team to two teams, but will be happy to put C or greater teams on a waitlist and allow them if we have sufficient room.

Can this be moved to the following Saturday on 5/19/12? That way it would still be a good warm-up for HSNCT the following weekend, but would not cause stress for people in the midst of their AP exams (since this weekend is right between week 1 and 2 of AP exams). Otherwise, many good teams may not be able to show up. Thanks!

Since mere hours after this was posted Irvine informed us that they were moving their date to April, we'll now look into trying to do it on the 19th.

Note of caution: the 2011 set will be much more representational of what this year's BHSAT should look like than previous incarnations.

The BHSAT set went a distribution change and a significant quality increase from 2010 to 2011 due to some structural editorial changes that we implemented. Therefore, the only tournament representative of this year's BHSAT will be last year's (2011's) BHSAT.

We're now halfway full with our field. We've got lots of new teams, but a number of the usual suspects have yet to sign up. We only have 24 spots unless we miraculously get more rooms or mods, so I'd encourage any interested teams in the area to get your registrations in sooner rather than later.

Effective immediately:

-For all teams who have not yet emailed us of their intentions, we will be limiting each school to 1 team each. We will start a "B team waitlist" for these schools' B teams.
-The number of players on each team has been raised to 6 rather than 5. Up to four players will play at each time with up to 2 alternates.
-We are raising the field cap to 27.

We will decide approximately 1 week before the tournament (when we get confirmation on our rooms and have a better idea of the moderator situation) whether or not to increase the field size again.

Schools should be emailing us as soon as possible of their interest to reserve a spot or to get on the waitlist. Moderators would be especially appreciated too.

Does this team limit apply to Arcadia?

EDIT: ignore this, checked the field update

Bellarmine hasn't been able to confirm yet because we need to work out travel with our school. How many teams would need to join the waitlist before you would expand the field?

If it helps, we currently have a C and D team of hopefuls along with our A/B-waitlist.

Field expansion is a matter of resources, not desire; I'd like nothing more than to run a 42-team tournament. Unfortunately, we do not find out how many rooms we have until a week before the event. Yes, that is as absurd as it sounds. The only workaround to it would likely involve 3 separate sites and still would not be confirmed for some additional time.

As soon as we get confirmation on rooms, I will adjust the field and inform all interested teams if we have space.

Due to exciting room reservations issues, this tournament will now take place at the Francis Parker school. All teams should've received a logistics email with full instructions and directions.

At this point, the main limiting factor for our size is moderators. If teams have any available moderators, please let us know and we will be able to increase the field size.

UPDATE: With the addition of one last team, the field is now closed at 28. We may consider increasing it up to 32 if we get more mods.

What about freelance mods? I'm still trying to pull in some more Irvine people but won't be able to let you know until probably tomorrow night.

We just had a drop and might have another soon, so we have an opening for at least one more team. C teams are now allowed. First schools to email get the spot.

In case someone from Arcadia checks this board before Andrew checks his e-mail, Chris just called me to say that a spot opened up for Arcadia C.

Arcadia C is now in the field.

The last team I need to hear from to confirm is Rancho Bernardo. If anyone from RB reads this, please confirm that you'll be bringing two teams tomorrow.

Now that the last mirror is over, the BHSAT XXI set is now clear for public discussion. Set to be posted in a placeholder site shortly.

Prelim and Playoff stats up here. I'll work on the combined ones later--they were't entered in a way that makes overall stats easy to get from a merge.
