NAQT MD & DC State Championship @ Oakland Mills HS, 3/24/12

Post by theBlue88s »

Oakland Mills High School is pleased to announce that we'll be hosting this year's NAQT MD & DC State Championship Tournament on March 24, which qualifies teams to compete in the HSNCT held in Atlanta in May

We'll capping the field at 48 teams.

FORMAT:
The tournament will follow standard NAQT procedures, except computational math tossups will NOT be heard and we will be playing 20 TU/B games instead of timed rounds.

COST:
$60 for the first team from a school
$55 for additional teams from a school

-$15 for each functional buzzer system
-$10 for each moderator provided

Minimum fee: $40 per team

Schedule:
Registration: 8:15-8:45am in the OMHS auditorium
We're hoping to start Round 1 at 9:00am

If we get 48 teams, the field will be split into brackets of 6, with teams playing a round robin within their brackets for 5 rounds before lunch. Teams will then be re-bracketed into tiers of 8 for a round-robin playoff and an additional 7 rounds.

If we don't get up to 48, you can still expect a similar schedule (around 5-7 preliminary matches before lunch, re-bracketed round robin playoffs after lunch), which I'll update here as needed.

Interested teams may register or send inquiries to Casey Retterer at:
casey_retterer[at]hcpss[dot]org

When you register, please indicate the number of buzzers systems and moderators you plan on bringing, if any.

We look forward to seeing you on the 24th!

I'll see if I can muster a team or two, as I want to do more than one QB tournament this year.

We've had difficulty committing much more than a week in advance. If we're going to attend tournaments around spring break, that'll obviously need to change.

Here's a Field Update as of this evening (3/11/12):

Quince Orchard 1

Gonzaga 1
Mt. Hebron 2
St. Anselm's 1
Blair 2

If you think you've registered and your school isn't on this list, let me know.

Also, I'll be closing registration for the tournament Friday (3/16) evening so that I have time to put a schedule together, organize volunteers and make copies of what needs copying. If you're on the fence or not sure about your team's schedule, you've got until then to figure it out.

Should I take the fact that computation tossups are being cut to mean that computational bonuses are being read?

We will be doing 1 bracket of 8 and two brackets of 7 for the prelims, and then rebracketing, with the top two of each bracket making up one bracket, and so on and so forth.

See you all tomorrow in the auditorium!

Thanks to everyone for coming to our tournament and congratulations to St. Anselm's for becoming the 2012 MD/DC state champion and to Aiden "The Power Broker" Mehigan for being the individual highest scorer. We'll have stats up by the end of the weekend. The tournament went o.k. for an 11 packet tournament, and there were some reading issues. Hopefully, the tournament will convince some of the NHS members who read today to join our team. It was an overall good experience for me because Noah Cowan said I was an "awesome reader"

Overall I enjoyed this tournament, but I have to say outside of your room and one other (I'm forgetting the name of the reader in it) I detested the reading. Good questions were ruined by poor pronunciation coupled with incredibly slow reading. Overall I enjoyed it, anyhow.

I would like to extend further congrats to the following teams:
  • Easton, for competing in their first tournament ever.
Catonsville, for competing in their first pyramidal tournament.
Glenelg, Mt. Hebron, Poly, Atholton, and Wilde Lake for competing in their first pyramidal tournament besides Centennial's.
Wilde Lake was surprisingly good, if they hadn't left after lunch it would've been interesting to see how they did after rebracketing.
Also, it looks like Eleanor Roosevelt Quizbowl has reemerged to prominence, as they made the top bracket.

St. Anselm's also became the first ever holders of the soon to become legendary "Golden Buzzer."

Yeah, the reading wasn't that good in a lot of rooms. We are a small team, so we had to rely on NHS people to read in some rooms, and they obviously needed a lot more training. There really wasn't an excuse for it, and I am truly sorry to all teams affected.

I don't think Gonzaga A put up 4.33 PPB one round while scoring >500 points.

Getting 30 tossups that round probably had something to do with that.
