(Posting on behalf of Nimish and Andrew)

The third Triton Winter Tournament will be held on Saturday January 21st, 2012, most likely at our usual location in HSS.

QUESTIONS: The questions will be written by National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC. The set identification number is IS-109.

NATIONAL QUALIFIER: Since this is an NAQT tournament, the top 15% of teams will receive invitations to the 2012 HSNCT. We also typically receive PACE certification for our tournaments; thus, a certain percentage of teams at TWT will qualify for the 2012 PACE National Scholastic Competition, to be held in Chicago in June 2012.

FORMAT: We plan to run a format of initial round-robins followed by a playoff in regrouped round-robins. Matches will be 20 pyramidal tossups and up to 20 bonuses.

REGISTRATION: Please officially register only after you are fairly certain you'll be able to come; having teams dropping out 24 hours before the tournament or not showing up at all complicates things considerably, and prevents us from providing you with a quality experience. Letting us know that you're interested is encouraged, however, if you can't commit to registration just yet.

Teams will be allowed to have 5 players total, so 4 players and one alternate. When you register, please send us a roster identifying who will be on each of your teams early on so we can set up our stat-keeping software in advance. Subsequent roster changes are fine, but the more information we have now, the better.

FEES:
Base fee (first team): $80
Second team and subsequent teams from the same school: $60
*Teams in difficult financial situations should contact us directly to discuss possible options

Discounts:
-$20 per competent moderator
-$10 per competent scorekeeper
-$5 per buzzer system
-$5 per 50 miles traveled, one-way, as judged by Google Maps from your school to UCSD

Please contact tournament directors Andrew Honda and Nimish Pratha at [email protected] if you have any questions. We'd love to have you join us at UCSD for an exciting day of quizbowl!

Unfortunately Arcadia will not be able to send teams to this tournament since our Science Bowl regional is the same day and we're not going to play devoid of all our science players.

Seems to me there have been less tournaments this year so far than in the last few years, especially with Caltech's epic failure to hold Technophobia Jr. this year for some reason.

We're looking forward to lots of good tournaments in the spring to attend.

Unfortunately, David Hu, head of RB Quizbowl, passed away recently.

As I understand it, previous emails went to his personal email account. Obviously, that won't work anymore, so please send all future emails to [email protected].

We will be tentatively bringing two teams. As far as I know, RB has no working buzzers that can leave the school. I'll re-check this.

**EDIT: We have either one or two working buzzers. We'll know how many by Sunday.

There are so few tournaments now (how did we end up hosting 2/3 of all the fall tournaments and almost half of all the tournaments in SoCal this year?) that y'all should attend every tournament you can, even if you can't field your best teams.

Some of the usual suspects still have yet to respond. University? Canyon Crest? NoHo? Random lurkers from other schools? Come on down. I've been calling Academic League schools and there is some interest, but it's much easier if more regularly-attending teams show up.

We have capped the field at 28 teams to enable a workable schedule given our room situation. Teams should expect four groups of seven teams in the prelim rounds followed by a rebracket into groups of five (and one of 3) for the playoffs. There will be two championship brackets that will play crossover games to determine 1st, 3rd, and 5th places (5th place team qualifies for HSNCT). All teams who haven't already should confirm the number of teams, buzzers, and staff that they're bringing.

We'd especially like to welcome our first-time teams of Southwest, La Jolla Country Day, and Scripps Ranch. See everyone Saturday.

Congratulations to Canyon Crest Academy for winning the third-annual Triton Winter Tournament today, breaking Torrey Pines' 5-tournament streak of winning UCSD tournaments. Canyon Crest triumphed by running the table in the prelim, playoffs, and cross-bracketed matches. Also congratulations to North Hollywood A for finishing a very strong 2nd and for a split La Jolla taking home third. Irvine A finished 4th, Torrey Pines A won a battle for 5th over Francis Parker A (which finished 6th), and North Hollywood B took 7th.

The winner of the first David Hu Memorial Award for Excellence in Academic Competition went to top individual scorer Erica of La Jolla. This award and its accompanying plaque will be presented to the top individual scorer at all future UCSD tournaments to honor David's quizbowl legacy in SoCal.

Stats are now available here. There are a few errors in the stats, but we're missing a few scoresheets and so can't confirm a few matches.

Thanks to all the teams who came out.
