2012 STANLEY CUP @ Georgetown Day (2/4/12)
The Georgetown Day School Quizbowl team would like to formally announce the Super Tournament that is for All-New, Leading, and Experienced teams, Yet is Completely Unrestricted and Pleasant for all (STANLEY CUP) to be held at Georgetown Day School on February 4, 2012. Georgetown Day School is located at 4200 Davenport Street NW in Washington, DC. To register, please send an e-mail to [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzer systems, and moderators which your team will bring. There is NO CAP on the number of teams that each school can bring. However, there is a tentative cap of 36 on the total number of teams. There are NO geographical restrictions. If you have any questions about the tournament feel free to e-mail me at [email protected].
Questions:
The questions will be HSAPQ Tournament-22. This question set is pyramidal and does not contain computational math. There will be fifteen-point powers and five-point negs. For more information about the questions, see: http://www.hsapq.com. HSAPQ also supplies samples on that website.
Tournament Structure:
Tournament check-in will begin at 8:15 a.m., while round one will start at 9:00 a.m. Each team will get to play 9-12 rounds. The teams will be bracketed into a number of 4-8 team brackets and subsequently re-bracketed by record. We will attempt to play-off most ties, but if we cannot, we will break the ties on points per bonus (PPB). Re-bracketing will most likely happen during lunch, which will probably be after round 5. After the playoff rounds, there will be an advantaged final between the top two teams and cross-bracket games to determine final placement. If the top team clears the rest of the field by two games, that team will be declared the winner.
Fees:
Base Fee: $70
Base Fee for additional teams: $60
Buzzer Systems: -$5 per system
Moderators: -$15 per moderator
Travel Discount: -$5 per 100 miles traveled
Minimum Fee: $40 per team
National Tournament Qualification:
This tournament has received Platinum Certification from PACE. The top 25% of the teams will qualify for the PACE-NSC to be held at Washington University in St. Louis on June 9-10, 2012.
Field: School (Teams/Buzzers/Moderators) (18/11/5)
Chantilly High School (2/1/1)
Maret (1/0/0)
Caesar Rodney (1/1/1)
Gonzaga (1/0/0)
Walter Johnson (1/1/0)
Richard Montgomery (2/1/1)

Centennial (2/1/0)
Montgomery Blair (2/1/0)
Walt Whitman (2/1/0)

We'll probably come to this. Haven't heard any HSAPQ sets this year and we always like them, so we're interested for sure.

As is now noted above, this tournament has been Platinum-Certified, so the top 25% of teams will qualify for PACE-NSC!

Well, I guess I spoke too soon; this tournament now conflicts with the snow make-up date of our VHSL regional tournament, so we won't be attending after all.Robbie Ram wrote:Robinson will bring 1-2 teams to this.

For the purposes of bracketing, i guess, we'll be missing our second-best player/"science player" for this tournament.

Re: 2012 STANLEY CUP @ Georgetown Day (2/4/12)
Registration will close tomorrow afternoon, so register now! Also, I will send an e-mail out tonight with some logistical information for registered teams. Highlights (many stated above):
1. Confirm that you are attending this tournament and the number of teams you are sending and send a contact phone number to [email protected] as soon as possible.
2. Make sure you find directions to 4200 Davenport St. NW, Georgetown Day High School campus, not the Lower/Middle School Campus at 4530 MacArthur Blvd. NW.
3. Registration/Check-in will begin at 8:15 am in the school's main room. You enter it as you enter the school's main entrance on Davenport Street. Please arrive by 8:45 am at the latest. We hope to start games by 9:00 am.
4. We will run a system of three brackets of six with round robins in the morning and will re-bracket into three brackets of six for the afternoon, first on W-L record, then PPB. Unless we get to 18 by tomorrow, there will be one scab/house/bye team.
5. Some breakfast will be provided.
6. We hope to finish by 5 p.m.
7. If you have any questions about this information or the tournament in general, please e-mail me at [email protected].

1. Whitman
2. RM A
We (Whitman) cleared the field by two so there was no final. We left just as Blair-A, Gonazaga, and WJ were playing off a three way tie for 3rd. Thanks to the GDS team for running an efficient and fun tournament.

Re: 2012 STANLEY CUP @ Georgetown Day (2/4/12)
Notice: Whitman is really really good.
These questions were pretty solid too. Thanks to HSAPQ for the first set we've heard from them this year. I'm sure the one we run in April will be great too.
GDS did a good job running this. I was happy to help out. My girls had a nice time, even though we feel like we didn't play that great. I'm curious if we ended up winning the consolation bracket or if Whitman B swept all those matches, though.

How are those stats looking? They appeared to be mostly complete during the tournament, with a couple kinks to be worked out.

Re: 2012 STANLEY CUP @ Georgetown Day (2/4/12)
I just checked, and the stats for this tournament are now up (on the right sidebar): http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/835/. I guess it must have taken a little time to upload the stats because they were all stored in a dark room of the terrifying labyrinth that is Daniel Brach-Neufeld's brain.
EDIT: Never mind, the stats were already linked to above.

Is there a reason why the combined stats lack PPB?

The combined stats are really messed up in general... I'd say stick to the prelims/playoffs separately if you're looking for correct and complete stats.Smuttynose Island wrote:Is there a reason why the combined stats lack PPB?

I just had the same problem combining stats from TJIAT. When I merged two separate SQBS files, it erased a lot of the information. Anybody out there with more experience with SQBS know how to fix this?
