One from a middle school kid practicing with us:
Question: "...some of them were starved by Incans as sacrifices to the gods..."
Answer Given: Survivor (the TV show, not the band)
Correct Answer: llamas
I still to this day wonder how he came up with this.

I'm curious as to what prompted it, however. Something about trees?

Well, the reader reset the buzzer as he started the question and my teammates buzzer went off without him touching it. Since our coach was reading the match, he didn't believe him and made him give an answer. He did realize that the buzzer was malfunctioning and we simply replaced the buzzer and went on with the question since he had only gotten one word out.

I think I made that mistake on a bonus part, because it wanted the tallest something-or-other, and I didn't think the Arch fell under that heading. Going to college in St. Louis, I was shamed.DaGeneral wrote:Washington Monument for Gateway Arch
Back in HS, a teammate of mine tried to say Fort Marlboro instead of Fort McHenry on a bonus part. When we didn't know the last part of the bonus, we had her say Fort Virginia Slims.

Gnolem for Golem at practice yesterday. I think I confused Golem and Gnome, and thus buzzed in with their unholy joint spawn.

I went in early when it started off with the exact height (630 ft) but I realized that the Washington Monument is 555 feet, and when they said Eero Saarinen, the art person on my team smacked me in the head.jonpin wrote:I think I made that mistake on a bonus part, because it wanted the tallest something-or-other, and I didn't think the Arch fell under that heading. After hearing the entire text of that question, Steve buzzed in with "At long last, sir, have you left no sense of decency?" (or something very similar)ezubaric wrote:Also at the ICT:

Not that anyone in our room was going to get it off of the moderator reading "L.A. Law and Order" as the giveaway.

Q: "In 1992, the 500th anniversary of Columbus...blah blah blah...what is the name for a 500th anniversary?"
A: "THANKSGIVING!" (cried very loudly and excitedly)
(Some of our team members still torment the kid about this, two years later.)

[quote]Colleen, those must have been Chip Beall questions.

I do realize that it was a bad question, but still, what does Thanksgiving have to do with anything in that question? (Like Columbus?)

WHAT?
I've known there was something up with you considering I've had no contact with you for three weeks and you have been absent from a few events your team has attended. I was just wondering what is going on with you. If you don't feel comfortable answering here, you know other ways to contact me.mrblinux's signature wrote:No longer affiliated with Blake It's Ac team :D

In this case, possibly. Wikipedia claims that he is occasionally refered to as Francis in English (something I haven't seen prior to this, but I don't read a whole lot about Franz), so if there's a good answer line or if your TD/moderator is informed and/or willing to research things, then you should be fine.Trevkeeper wrote:Hmm. Then, if I committed the cardinal sin of QB and said a first name, would they accept both Francis and Franz?

If they did not accept either Francis or Franz, that is a very legitimate protest. For all we know, you were raised by rabid anti-Germans who taught you history with Anglicized names, and by not accepting Francis, you are being discriminated against. Similar logic is behind original-language names always being accepted.Trevkeeper wrote:Hmm. Though "Joe Table" is still not acceptable on Jose Mesa tossups.

In Cleveland, we would accept several other answers, each of which I would get banned for sayingBruce wrote: Though "Joe Table" is still not acceptable on Jose Mesa tossups.
