Online Skype Practice League - Round 2

Post by Great Bustard »

Teams are now set for Round 2 of the Online Skype Practice League, which will begin Wednesday, September 21, and run for five weeks, after which Round 3 will begin. As with Round 1, teams will consist of four students, be balanced by geography, ability, and subject strengths, and matches will run at 8:15, 9:00, and 9:45pm Eastern. If you are interested in playing OSPL Round 3, please email me. Space will be limited to the first 24 students who sign up.

Students on the winning team will receive free entry into a National History Bee regional or state tournament of their choice. Students on the winning team will be ineligible for the next four iterations of OSPL, but will qualify for the Online Skype Champions League in May 2012. Other students may play in future iterations of OSPL, but only if they have played OSPL once or not at all, and they are prohibited from signing up until 12:01am Eastern on Friday, October, 21. Schools are limited to having only two students compete in any iteration of OSPL.

Teams will be ranked according to record, then by head to head competition (if applicable), then by total points. If three or four teams all have the same record, and head to head among said teams is also identical, then head to head will be ignored.

Good Luck!

Thanks for keeping my interest in mind Dave, the time for this is perfectly fine for me. I have a teammate who doesn't go on these forums who I might be able to reel in for this as well, but don't hold a spot yet.

Subbing for Todd was a blast, so count me in for Round 2, if I'm eligible to sign up at this time.

Bump as seven slots are still remaining, though in a few days, this will open up to Round 1 participants if space is still available. If you want in for OSPL Round 2, please send me a private message or mail me at: director at historybowl dot com
Thanks!

Todd said to post that he won't be able to make the league since he's out of power.

So these matches are going to run every Wednesday? I'm just trying to clarify because the bolded edit it looks like would be appropriate for August, not September.

This is directed towards everybody, but is there another day that works besides Wednesdays for people? Wednesday is the only day of the week I have marching band practice and I really can't miss that. Friday is also a no go. If necessary, I could find replacements for the weeks I can't make it or wait until Round 3, marching band is done in early October.

For myself, the only problems I see right now are Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Thursdays are when my quiz team practices take place, for whatever its worth it doesn't end until 8:30, and I live a good 30 minutes from my school, so I'd rather not do Thursday, not to mention it's also going to be my hardest day of homework considering my schedules and ingenious "double period" day thing we do. I also don't have a Study Hall the proceeding day the majority of the time now, so my Thursday night doesn't look great for OSPL.

Friday - shouldn't be too much of a problem, the reason I'd like to not do this is for h.s. football.

Saturday - same dilemna as Friday as my high school plays their home games on Saturdays.

So really, the last two aren't real issues, but I can tell you that if the day was changed to Thursday, I'd probably have to pull out of it.

I don't have any cross country meets on Mondays and Thursdays in the five week range for this, so either of those would be best, but I can probably show up any day. Friday isn't really preferred since I have a couple of meets that are somewhat far away, but they don't work for Dylan in any case, so this is kind of a moot point.

*Is not seeing Schindler on the list*

Tuesday or Monday are the best options for me, but Thursday would work. Saturday might get stick with Tournaments for me since I believe we're doing stuff in early October.

It would be unfair to change it from Wednesdays at this point, though in the future, I could see running it on Monday-Thursday. Five slots remain; they will be opened to Rd. 1 players from all but the Fracas from Caracas in two days if not claimed before then.

Actually, If I can hurry home from Band practice, I can make it to an 8:45 match. I don't have band practice every week, so I should be able to stay in and just get a substitute for the days I just can't make it.

Teams and schedules are now set for OSPL - Round 2. Email me if any times pose a major problem (i.e. you could make your match if it were held in a different time slot - we can't switch dates, but I can potentially move matches around, at least until Sep. 15 or so.) Have fun and good luck!

Just to clarify, what is the "procedure" for starting the match? In other words, what time should we plan to be on Skype?

Players should watch their inboxes early this coming week for an email with a response to this question, and other details.

I was bored, so I aggregated nationals stats for the players in this league:

Player HSNCT PPG/PACE PPG

Team A: Budapest Control ---Total: 35.68
1. Rohan Achar, Solon High School, Solon, OH 35.68/---
2. Matt Duchan, Chapel Hill High School, Chapel Hill, NC ---/---
3. Ketan Jha, Walt Whitman High School, Bethesda, MD Not A/---
4. Anderson Wang, Wissahickon High School, Ambler, PA ---/---

Team B: Taipei Behavior --- Total: 129.01
1. Daniel Galitsky, Richard Montgomery High School, Rockville, MD 33.54/11.88
2. Joseph Gargiulo, Kings Park High School, Kings Park, NY ---/---
3. Tom Moore, Fisher Catholic High School, Lancaster, OH 32.08/---
4. Max Schindler, Ladue Horton Watkins High School, Ladue, MO 74.22/---

Team C: The Bern Unit --- Total: 77.51
1. Sam Deutsch, Richard Montgomery High School, Rockville, MD 23.60/---
2. Brianna Prislipsky, South Range High School, Canfield, OH 24.43/---
3. Justin Song, Torrey Pines High School, San Diego CA 9.48/---
4. Richard Yu, Hunter College High School, New York, NY ---/40.00

Team D: Pristina's World --- Total: 113.52
1. Dylan Minarik, Belvidere North High School, Belvidere, IL 72.00/---
2. David Hu, Rancho Bernardo High School, San Diego, CA 23.74/---
3. Ben Zhang, Ladue Horton Watkins High School, Ladue, MO 17.78/---
4. Shashank Raghavachari, Solon High School, Solon, OH ---/---

Team E: Belgrade Inflation --- Total: 61.57
1. Roxanne Ilagan, Grosse Point North High School, Grosse Point Woods, MI 0.00/---
2. Adam Kalinich, Illinois Math and Science Academy, Aurora, IL 33.77/27.50
3. Do Won Kim, Torrey Pines High School, San Diego, CA ---/---
4. Raymond Liu, Escobar Learning Commune, Farallon Islands, CA 25.88/37.00

Team F: The Kingston Quartet --- Total: 79.78
1. Krishna Bharathala, Escobar Learning Commune, Farallon Islands, CA ---/---
2. Siddhant Dogra, Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills, MI 51.17/---
3. Josh Markowitz, York Suburban High School, York, PA ---/---
4. Sohan Vartak, Olmsted Falls High School, Olmsted Falls, OH 23.11/34.12

I'd predict Taipei behavior to win the league. However, those ---/--- players might put up a lot of points that could help their team, and other players might do better if they've been shadowed on their normal team.

I'd predict Taipei behavior to win the league. However, those ---/--- players might put up a lot of points that could help their team, and other players might do better if they've been shadowed on their normal team.
For comparison basis, I did this for the first session to see how good of a predictor it was. The first number is using PACE total individual stats like above and the 2nd is using just prelim individual stats (since that's less biased as to which playoff brackets one was in - for example, Tristan and Eamon's ppgs may have been inflated by being in the bottom quarter or so of the field, and Bobby's may have been deflated by being in the top quarter or so). I also added in just prelim in parentheses to Adam's post.

Expected 1 (187.15/168) - Fracas - Actual 1
Expected 2 (127.89/103.6) - Lens Grinders - Actual 3
Expected 3 (106.91/128.16) - Syndromes - Actual 5
Expected 4 (96.3) - Calatravas - Actual 6
Expected 5 (71.69) - Penh Pals - Actual 4
Expected 6 (57.23/65.11) - Khan Artists - Actual 2

Seems pretty accurate. The only outlier is the Khan Artists, and that's because I didn't go to either HSNCT or PACE.

Thanks to everyone who played tonight, and thanks even more for your patience with some technical difficulties, particularly in the second game.

Results:

Kingston 345-75 Budapest
Belgrade 490-105 Taipei
Bern 360-280 Pristina

I will enter the stats into SQBS tonight, but I don't have the password to the OSPL scobo results page yet. Once I do, or once I forward the files to someone who does, they'll be up.

Thanks again -- good luck in the second day of matches!

If at all possible, could the sets used in the future please not be available on the Torrey pines database? I have gone through at least 20% of the HS history questions on there, and I expect that others playing in this league may have done the same thing in other categories. I don't think I saw any of these questions before, but I really can't be sure if it has been on the database.

I just uploaded the stats through the QB resource database, but when I try to use the link to view it, the site says error getting report.

Did you get any errors when you uploaded? It doesn't look like there are any files on the server.

Good catch, Max. I've adjusted them - tonight's matches are the same time as the others. I will wait a little longer for everyone in the first match, if people aren't there at 8:15 - I'll read fast in the first match if I need to.

Would it be alright with everyone if Pristina's World's matches the next two weeks are moved to the 9:45 timeslot? Those are my last two weeks of band practice, and I wouldn't be able to make the matches unless they're later.

Three weeks in, Taipei is in last place (of course it doesn't help when half their team doesn't show up), and Belgrade is dominating, though predicted to come in 5th. That's why we play the game :) Standings are now up at the bottom of the first post - note the change in match times for next week!

Man, I can't help feeling like I wouldn't be doing nearly as well if I were actually present at every game.

Dave/Greg (joint entity known as Davegreg!?) : Will there per chance be a prize for top individual scorer or is that out of the question?

Ketan, you're much more likely to win said prize if you actually show up to all your games. But sure, top scorer in an individual match over the course of the five weeks gets a free Bee entry, along with the winning team. Hint, hint, the Maryland History Bee is in Baltimore on Nov. 19

I can't believe that someone in our game actually got "the lady, or the tiger". It has never even come up in college. These packets are slightly ridiculous.

Indeed..

I only got it because a month ago I was reading http://www.csc.kth.se/utbildning/kth/ku ... re06_6.pdf and the phrase sounded familiar, so I wiki'd it and did some link hopping. That question was just bad.
It is surprising that it doesn't come up in college tournaments though, given some of the things they ask about..

If you use the "Read To Me" function of the TP database and only have h.s. difficulty on and literature only, it will come up eventually. "Every barleycorn is a King" (or whatever it is) sounded pretty familiar to me when we heard the tossup.

EDIT1: Wording choice

EDIT 2: Yeah, I wonder what the power rate when this set was used at a tournament x years ago was for tossups on like "Pakistan" and "Hungary".

Once again, I would like to ask why we're using this tournament. Wouldn't it make more sense to use a tournament that's at least not on the torrey pines database, even if it's on www.quizbowlpackets.com? With 20 tossups per match and 8 players, the odds dictate that at least once per match someone is getting a tossup that they've already seen before on the database.
