Duke Quizbowl is interested in hosting our annual spring invitational on Saturday, April 14th, 2012. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any conflicting activities that may interfere with participation (besides the ACT date) before we formally order packets and reserve rooms.

The only other tournament that may happen is a tournament in Salisbury, NC, which I guess isn't that close to Duke. The date is still TBA for it, but we and probably a lot of other teams in the area would be much more likely to go to Duke as it is obviously much closer.

Yea, it looks like an undergraduate tournament we wish to attend has just been announced on the same date. We'll probably change the date to April 7th or April 21st. Again, same question, are there any potential conflicts with those dates?

At this point everything we know about is on the NCATA calendar.

East Chapel Hill would prefer April 7.

I think the April 21st date would be better, because April 7th is during Spring Break (At least in the CHCCS school district) and it might be hard to get schools to tournaments over Spring Break. Then again, that would only make up three possible attending schools so..just a note.

The bad news about an April 7 tournament is that's Easter weekend. The good news is, you won't have ANY conflicts with other events going on that weekend!

The first set of the weekly NCASA quiz bowl conference meets is complete. Early College at Guilford A and Page High School lead the Triad Conference, while AL Brown High School leads the Mountain Conference. Full standings can be found on our website: http://www.ncscholastic.org.

Finally, the NCASA Board of Directors agreed to expand to offer a comprehensive middle school program next year. Quiz Bowl will be one of the competitions we will offer to interested middle schools. We will also award a Middle School Cup to the top NC middle school based on their performance in the major scholastic competitions, including Quiz Bowl.

Contact me for more information or to get on my middle school distribution list to learn more as the program is developed.

details from Bradley Hicks at WF:

"For this tournament we are using NAQT questions and rules, and we are looking to get 10 or 11 schools to participate. With that said, of all the people I emailed, your spot in our tournament is not guaranteed, so your promise to participate is needed as soon as you are sure you are coming.

Some general information about our tournament

Date, Time, and Location: Saturday February 25th at Wake Forest University in Carswell Hall. Registration begins at 9 AM and matches will begin around 10 AM.

Cost: A base cost of 80 dollars is required, but a 10 dollar discount will be applied to teams who supply a buzzer system. An additional 10 dollar discount will be offered to teams who must drive 1.5 or more hours to compete. An early registration discount of 10 dollars is also possible (see below).

Additional Teams: You may only bring 1 additional team to our tournament for a cost of 10 dollars.

Our tournament is a qualifier for the top 15% of teams for the 2012 NAQT HSNCT.

Early Registration: An additional discount of 10 dollars will be given to teams who register by sending a check received by mail by February 18th. A check must be mailed in with the correctly verifiable value (travel time deduction + early registration deduction). Logically, we can't verify your buzzer discount until you arrive and supply us with it, so you will get that discount in cash when you arrive Therefore the minimum check to be sent is 60 dollars. Please verify by email the date that you send your check. If you choose not to send in a check we will accept cash or check at registration. Make checks payable to me, Bradley Hicks, and hand them in at check in or mail them to:

1834 Wake Forest Rd.
PO Box 28316
Winston-Salem, NC 27109

The tournament style is round robin and we will have one or possibly two playoff rounds for deciding who gets 4th through 1st place.

The basic construction of the tournament is thus, with some variations depending on final attendance:

10AM - ~12PM: Rounds 1-5

~12-PM - ~1:45PM: Lunch Break

~2PM - 4PM: Rounds 6-9 and Playoffs.

4PM - 5PM: Prizes and Standings.

Understandably, we may deviate from this schedule, but we will try to keep everything on schedule as much as possible."

NHBB is looking to reschedule to avoid the date conflict on 3/10. Some options appear to be 3/17, 3/18, 3/31, or the decidedly-not-ideal-but-still-far-better-than-nothing approach of doing an abbreviated tournament on a weekday evening sometime in March or early April. April 7 is about as late as we could go, since Nationals is three weeks later, and we'd love to get a few NC teams up for it (it's driveable for all, which helps). Can someone chime in with what the best course of action would be? 3/31 at first glance looks ok, but am I overlooking something there?

The 31st would be great. East Quiz Bowl was debating between History Bowl/Bee and Quiz Bowl, and it would be great to not have this conflict, especially considering it's at our school.

I talked to the teacher running it at East, and he won't be there on the 31st.

The 17th would probably eliminate some Western NC teams.

Did Madden drop the idea of rescheduling? 10th seems to be the most conflicting date of all.

I would have liked to rescheduled but the host school wasn't up for it. Next year we'll coordinate this better, though our date had been announced earlier.

I think that regardless, it wouldn't have been feasible for us to go, seeing as all of our juniors were either taking the SAT or doing track. Having the day up well in advance was a good start, but I think most of the kids at the club at our school put quiz bowl on the back-burner. Our team won't even be full for the Central Region tournament, but it's better than nothing and I'm happy to go to any tournament with a decent sized field and good questions.

Wait, wait. This just in. After talking it over with East Chapel Hill, we are in fact now going to be moving our tournament there for North Carolina schools back a week until March 17. Hopefully this will allow a number of other schools to take part in our tournament. Please see www.historybowl.com/registration to sign up and email me with any questions you might have. Hope you can make it!

Thanks for running the event. Would've been to nice to have had a full team, but there were several people having conflicts with the SAT, Track and work. Also, sorry about leaving the buzzers. Assuming that we do bring a team to states (don't see why we wouldn't), I will get the buzzers then. It was a long day and I was trying to leave as fast as possible, not really thinking about them.

For anyone who did not participate in the tournament but is following this, the first tiebreaker was PPG; the 5th tiebreaker was head-to-head wins. Both Carrboro and RCHS had wins over the teams they finished behind.
