DAFT III (11/5/11)

Post by Kahloon »

I am pleased to announce the third iteration of the Dunbar Academic Fall Tournament (DAFT).

Location
Paul Laurence Dunbar High School: 1600 Man O' War Blvd. Lexington, KY 40513

Registration
Send an email with "DAFT" in the subject line to [email protected].
Please list the number of teams and buzzer systems that your school will provide. Please include how many miles your team will be traveling in one direction according to Google Maps in order to qualify for transportation discounts. Emails merely expressing interest are encouraged.

Questions
Each round of DAFT will consist of 20 pyramidal power-marked tossups (12pt TNR) as well as 20 unrelated three-part bonuses.
Target difficulty will feature clues above regular season difficulty on accessible answer lines.

Format
Tossups will be played with powers and negs.
Bonuses will have no bouncebacks.
Preliminary and playoff rounds will be bracketed round robin pool play.
Every team will be guaranteed seven games regardless of field size.
Ties between teams of different prelim brackets will be broken in the following order: PPB, PP20TUH, PPG

Fees
$70 for first team, -$10 per additional team from same school.
-$10 for each working buzzer system provided by a school. (Applies to school, team)
-$-10 for every 200 miles traveled one way according to Google Maps. (Applies to school, team)

Mirrors
We would like to host as many mirrors as possible this year. Please contact me if you intend on hosting DAFT this year.
The tentative mirroring fee is only $10 per team.

I would be interested in mirroring. Could you send me an old tournament to look at?

Thanks,

Saint Joe's of Metuchen might be interested in mirroring, but we do recall that Princeton mirrored in this region last year, so we would not want to interfere with a pre-arranged mirror. However, if there is no pre-existing agreement, we can mirror it either sometime in December (probably the 10th or 17th) or March 17th of 2012. If either of these possible months/dates seems OK, let us know and we can firm up the December option (March 17 is a definite date).

There is no pre-existing agreement for a DAFT mirror at Princeton. I'd prefer a December mirror date, so let me know what works best for you.

Idrees,

As soon as I know, I will contact you. I thought I had our building reserved for December 17th, and I am pretty sure it will remain reserved for that date, but my Principal asked me today to see if I can share the buidling with our Science Department, which wants to host an 8th grade tournament that day. I do not think we can share in this way, but let me talk to the head of our science department before giving you a firm date just yet.

I'm just making sure you know this is on the same day as another tournament in the state, mirroring HFT...

My apologies, we were trying to avoid the SAT date on Nov. 5 by switching dates with our middle school tournament held on Nov. 19. The date is being moved back to the original date of Nov. 5.

I'd just like to remind everyone that we are still looking for teams to come to this tournament. I'd invite teams outside the region to attend and lend some geographical diversity to the field.

For Illinois teams and anybody else interested, DAFT III is being mirrored at Belvidere North High School on December 10, 2011. The thread is here.

Thanks to all the teams that came out today. DCC A and DCC B came in first and second, respectively. I'd like to hear any critiques of the tournaments, not related to the actual content of the questions, so that we can improve the set for future mirrors. Complete statistics should be posted this Monday. Thanks again.

Any specific criticisms of the set can be submitted electronically via this survey form.

For any and all spectators, none of Manual's A team could make it, so each letter is the one below it.

Thanks for hosting this, Idrees. We had a great time and we can't wait to come back next year.

Were the stats of a couple rounds not available? Our final rounds from both the prelims and playoffs don't seems to be in the stats.
