2012 Fleming County Academic Tournament (1-14-2012)

Post by FCPanther »

The 2012 edition of the Fleming County Academic Tournament is scheduled for January 14th at Fleming County High School in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.

The tournament is great late tune up heading into District Governor's Cup competition. As such, we'll keep the matches in that format. With Governor's Cup moving more pyramidal we will do the same. We will used pyramidal toss ups with paired single part bonuses. (We are play testing to determine exactly how many toss ups per half and that will come in a later update). We do still plan on at least four pool play rounds before moving into elimination rounds.

Pretty much everything will stay the same as in years past, $60 entry fee for each school's first team, $30 for additional squads. We do ask that teams bring at least one moderator or judge/scorer and a working buzzer system.

We will have varsity and "B" team divisions (not necessarily limited to JV only). As such multiple teams are welcome.

There is one potential change. We are looking at the feasibilty of adding a Friday night session for teams that have to travel in the day before. If there is enough interest we are thinking of adding two or three rounds on Friday. These rounds WOULD NOT count in the standings or seedings for Saturday's session.

We will probably attend this if it uses HSAPQ or NAQT questions.

The tournament will be using HSAPQ's VHSL sets slightly modified to a toss up, bonus, bounce back format in order to make this a tournament with better questions, and a good tune up for Governor's Cup competition.

Here's the field as it stands now (some schools will be entering teams in the Varsity and "B" divisions)

Fleming County
Johnson Central
Campbell County
Bishop Brossart
Lafayette
Ashland Paul Blazer
Russell
Woodford County
Adair County
Daviess County
Henry Clay
Simon Kenton
Dunbar
Harrison County

In addition to those that have been added to the field there are a number of unconfirmed or interested schools.

Congratulations to P. L. Dunbar, champion of the 2012 FCAT. They defeated Danville in the championship game. Dunbar and Bishop Brossart graciously shared the "B" team championship in lieu of fighting it out in the face of potentially threatening weather.

More details to come in the next day or two.

A HUGE thank you to our voluteers, and to coaches and players for you patience in light of our early technical difficulties. There is a reason TDs ask for working buzzers.

Thanks for a good tournament. We loved the new question choice and all of our moderators were terrific! Special thanks to the Bishop Brossart team and the class they showed in helping us put safety over the chance to compete in a game I know both teams would have loved to have played. By the time I hit the country backroads of Jessamine County near my home, my car could hardly get traction to make it up the inclines. I think we made a good decision to share the victory!

I really thought Grayson County was going to finally be able to make it to Fleming County, but it always seems like bad weather or bad luck or something keeps us from going. Glad to hear you had a good tournament though. When you do post more results, are you going to post some sort of statistics? If not, can you post a list of teams that attended?
