BELLICOSE (4/10/2011)

Post by Tanay »

This is a preliminary announcement for BELLarmine’s Intellectually Challenging Open (Spring Edition!), or BELLICOSE, a tournament scheduled for Sunday, April 10, 2011 at Bellarmine College Preparatory's campus in San Jose, California. The tournament will run from approximately 9 am to 5 pm. A more detailed schedule will be provided closer to the tournament date.

Format:
This tournament will use the BATE set, edited by Aaron Cohen of RPI. We are excited to be using this set, the first housewrite ever used in Northern California, and anticipate that teams will enjoy it. Rounds will feature 20 tossups with bonuses. Our expectation is that every team in attendance will play at least 8 or 9 rounds, not including playoffs. Prizes will be awarded to top teams and individual players, and we hope to attain certification from PACE so that we can qualify teams for the NSC (National Scholastic Tournament), as we did for our tournament earlier this year.

Pricing:
The pricing has not yet been determined, but there will be discounts for entering multiple teams and providing lockout buzzer systems or staffers. Teams traveling from other circuits will get discounts as well. I anticipate having more information about pricing by next week.

We warmly invite teams who do not normally participate in quiz bowl outside of Quiz Kids! to attend this tournament.

To register, please email Chris Fleitas (cfleitas AT bcp DOT org) with the following information:

School Name
Number of Teams
Will you be providing a buzzer?
Will you be providing a reader/scorekeeper?

Registered teams will be provided with more detailed information regarding parking, campus layout, etc. Please feel free to contact Mr. Fleitas if you have any questions about the tournament.
We look forward to seeing you at BELLICOSE!

Thanks,
Tanay Kothari

We can bring at least two teams and one buzzer to this one.

But I shall forgive you. Some things are beautiful because they cannot be obtained.

It turns out that this tournament is actually taking place on the 10th after all.

The field has been closed at 8 teams representing 3 schools. These teams will be divided into Varsity and JV divisions with 4 teams in each division. There will be a triple round-robin and then playoff rounds as needed.

This happened. Mission San Jose A (the real, undivided team!) won with a 9-2 record. It consisted of Jeffrey, Richard, Raymond, and another Jeffrey. They put up something like 22-23ppb on the BATE set.
Second place went to the small Bellarmine house team (Phil, Sameer, and Debnil), which had an 8-3 record. They put up something like 20-21ppb.
The top four scorers were Phil from Bellarmine, (freshman!) Sameer from Bellarmine, Richard from MSJ, and Jeffrey from MSJ.
Stats will be up sometime during the middle of the week and will include JV.

I've been visiting colleges and in that time have had no access to the SQBS files. My bad. I'll post these sometime next week.

Stats are up! Ignore the standings, since we did have separate brackets for Varsity and JV teams that I'll try to denote when I figure out how to do so. Nonetheless, the other numbers are accurate.
