2011 Ben Cooper NAQT MD/DC Champ. @ Georgetown Day (4/2/11)
The Georgetown Day School Quizbowl team would like to formally announce the 2011 Ben Cooper Memorial NAQT MD/DC Championship (BCMNMD/DCC) to be held at Georgetown Day School on April 2, 2011. Georgetown Day School is located at 4200 Davenport Street NW in Washington, DC. To register, please send an e-mail to [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzer systems, and moderators which your team will bring. There is NO CAP on the number of teams that each school can bring, nor is there a cap on the total number of teams. However, due to NAQT restrictions, only teams from DC and Maryland can attend the championship. If you have any questions about the tournament feel free to e-mail me at [email protected].
Questions:
The questions will be NAQT IS-105, which will have been written specifically for state championships. This question set is pyramidal, and we will cut the computational math. We will also read 20 tossup/20 bonus untimed rounds. There will be fifteen point powers and five point negs.
Tournament Structure:
Tournament check-in will begin at 8:15 a.m., while round one will (hopefully) start at 9:00 a.m. Each team will get to play 9-12 rounds. The teams will be bracketed into a number of 4-6 team brackets and subsequently re-bracketed by record. We will attempt to play-off most ties, but if we cannot, we will break the ties on points per bonus (PPB). Re-bracketing will most likely happen during lunch, which will probably be after round 5. After the playoff rounds, there will be an advantaged final between the top two teams and/or cross-bracket games to determine final placement.
Fees:
Base Fee: $70
Base Fee for additional teams: $60
Buzzer Systems: -$5 per system
Moderators: -$15 per moderator
Travel Discount: -$5 per 100 miles traveled
Minimum Fee: $30 per team
National Tournament Qualification:
Because this tournament is an NAQT state championship, one spot is reserved at the 2011 NAQT HSNCT for the highest finishing team at this tournament that has not already qualified for the HSNCT. In addition, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the HSNCT, as with all NAQT tournaments. The top four finishers at this tournament will also qualify for the 2011 PACE-NSC championship in Chicago, while up to an additional 4 may qualify following a post-tournament evaluation.
Field: School (Teams/Buzzers/Moderators) (16/16-28/5)
St. Anselm's (1/1/0)
Magruder (2/2/1)
Blair (2/1/0)
Landon (2/1/0)
Bullis (1/0/0)
Whitman (2/2/0)
Wilson (1/0/0)
Gonzaga (1/0/1)
Oakland Mills (1/1/1)
Richard Montgomery (2/1/1)
Quince Orchard (1/0/0)
David Madden (0/6-18/1)
(To be updated as I receive registrations)

WJ is interested as well, but I will almost certainly be at the Science Olympiad state tournament on the same day.

In this tournament, do MD and DC count as one state?

NAQT thinks of it that way for this tournament. I think it might benefit the NAQT MD/DC State Championship to include some counties in Northern Virginia, but I guess that would hurt the VA States and be somewhat confusing.

I'd love to bring B-CC, but I'm out of town until late that evening, and, in any case, I wouldn't be able to corral my team in time. Hope it all goes brilliantly...

No. We have issued a clarification to our HSNCT qualification policy accordingly:sir negsalot wrote:In this tournament, do MD and DC count as one state?
Edit: fixed!naqt.com wrote: If a NAQT State Championship/Qualifier is officially the championship for two (or more) states, then the top not-yet-qualified finisher from each state will receive an invitation, as will the top small school from each state (assuming a median finish or better). In addition, each state's champion will receive a reserved berth. For these purposes, the District of Columbia counts as a state.

is no, in that MD and DC count as two states.sir negsalot wrote:In this tournament, do MD and DC count as one state?
Also can you clarify the implications of this to Kellenberg (and other potential Empire State invaders) playing at the NJ championship?

This tournament is coming up quite soon (i.e. this Saturday). It would be nice to reach a number better than fifteen, and hopefully, the interested teams can solve that problem for us. I will probably close registration around 6 p.m. on Friday, but please register sooner rather than later! As an additional incentive, it seems that we now have two spots reserved at HSNCT, one for a Maryland team and another for a DC team.

Re: 2011 Ben Cooper NAQT MD/DC Champ. @ Georgetown Day (4/2/11)
Perhaps reaching out to some teams may help increase the size of the field. Teams who we know exist and compete but may not be on the forum here. Or teams that don't often do pyramidal quizbowl like Rockville, Bel Air, Sherwood, Wootton. Perhaps getting an e-mai list from Kevin Keegan, or the producer of It's Academic would be helpful. Then an invitation could be sent to them, rather than hoping they show up on this website and see the annoucnement? I feel like for the "state championship" we should try to include as many teams from Maryland as we can...especially the teams who aren't regularly at weekend competitions.

Well, it is too late now, but that is great advice for the host of next year's MD/DC State Championship or any tournament host looking to grow the game in the area. I also think that it would be helpful to have some kind of central list for the area that includes the e-mail addresses of people who do not visit the boards often or at all in addition to the e-mail addresses of the usual quizbowl teams.
