VHSL Scholastic Bowl '10-'11 Discussion

Post by Madoc »

The return of a perennial DC-Metro board thread. I'll just leave this here.

Any early-season predictions for A, AA, AAA? I know in A, George Mason's already putting up big numbers: 375-100 vs Rappahannock Co, 365-95 against Madison Co, and 340-95 against Strasburg. I don't know much else about the other groups, though.

Mason repeats in A. I really would be stunned if they are beaten in VHSL play this season. Whoever finishes second in the Bull Run District will likely finish second in Region B for the 5th straight year. That's my early season prediction.

Here are the results of last Monday's Bull Run matches:

Match One:

MP 260, Madison 140
Clarke 270, Strasburg 140
GM 375, Rapp 100

Match Two:

Rapp 220, Clarke 215
MP 290, Strasburg 105
GM 365, Madison 90

Match Three:

MP 205, Clarke 195 (OT)
GM 340, Strasburg 95
Rapp 205, Madison 180

Oow. Hard to argue with you there; Mason doesn't appear to have lost any ground at all from last year's championship team (probably gained more ground, rather). The Bull Run District in general looks pretty stiff, anyway. I'm interested to see if GM heads to any invitationals this year, too.

I don't have much info on Region D aside from this:
-The Clinch Mountain District is looking pretty tough. Lebanon High, last year's Region D Runner-Up, is supposedly down a bit, but I've yet to hear any scores other than those below. Gate City and Lee (who placed 3rd Group A in 07-08) are both in the heat for the district title as well. Lee's beaten GC once already, but it was decided by 10 or 20 points, so I guess it could go either way between the two.
-The Cumberland District will probably have the same show as last year-- Thomas Walker(1) and Twin Springs(2). TS is undefeated so far, but don't think they've played Thomas Walker yet. Both teams were out at the Region D tournament pretty quickly last year, so I don't expect either to be very tough this year either.
-Black Diamond District play doesn't start until later in the month, but Honaker's played 4 games already:
Lebanon at HHS on October 28th
Lebanon 220 -- Honaker 190
Lebanon 195 -- Honaker 185
Honaker at Grundy (AA) on Nov. 9th
Grundy 230 -- Honaker 185
Grundy 150 -- Honaker 245

I don't have all of the scores, but:

Match 4:
Mason 330, Manassas Park 135
Rapp 260, Strasburg 160
Clarke vs. Madison?

Match 5:
Mason 350, Clarke 90
Manassas Park 225, Rapp 205
Madison 185, Strasburg 170

Mason 5-0
Manassas Park 4-1
Rapp 3-2
Clarke/Madison 1-3 (1 unknown)
Strasburg 0-5

The battle for number 2 in this district is going to be pretty tough.

I'm hoping that the VHSL has taken some extra precautions in the event of a repeat of last winter.

More Honaker scores, though I don't have the dates just yet.

Agreed on the precautions. I think using directed conversion on your own set is the best possible method of comparing apples to apples as in this case you're competing against the questions, and won't benefit by being able to romp through easier opponents.

As for Honaker hanging up 415 on Council -- I think Maggie Walker put up 420 at Regions one year. How often have folks put up 400?

After 15 matches, the Bull Run District Standings are something like:

Mason 15-0
(Monumental Gap)
MP 11-4
Clarke 8-7
Rapp 7-8
Madison 4-11
Strasburg 0-15

Plus or minus a game for each team. I watched Mason and they are good!

BRD Tournament is Saturday, January 22.

VHSL River Ridge District Season
* Christiansburg played a solid season and ended up with the first seed and an undefeated season. Very well-balanced team and did a great job. Actually, if you were to look at the scores for many of the matches, a lot of them were extremely close. Some determined by the last question (i.e., Blacksburg v. CS, Christiansburg v. Salem). There are a TON of great teams in the district this year and it's hard to see one of those teams end their season after the district tournament.

1 Christiansburg (5-0)
2 Cave Spring (4-1)
3 Salem (3-2)
4 Blacksburg (2-3)
5 Pulaski County (1-4)
6 Hidden Valley (0-5)

VHSL River Ridge District Tournament (Roanoke, VA)

Round 1
4 Blacksburg 270 - 5 Hidden Valley 110

Round 2
1 Christiansburg 265 - 4 Blacksburg 175
2 Cave Spring 210 - 3 Salem 185

Round 3
Salem 290 - Hidden Valley 95 (Hidden Valley eliminated)
Christiansburg 215 - Cave Spring 220

Round 4
Salem 170 - Blacksburg 205 (Salem eliminated)

Round 5
Christiansburg 280 - Blacksburg 130 (Blacksburg eliminated - 3rd place)

Round 6
Christiansburg 210 - Cave Spring 240 (Christiansburg eliminated - 2nd place)

So representing the River Ridge District will be 1-Cave Spring, 2-Christiansburg, and 3-Blacksburg. They will come back to Cave Spring High School for the Region IV tournament on February 5th.

In Region D, Honaker and Lebanon High ascend to the state level once again. Honaker beat Lebanon in an advantaged final to take the crown for the third year in a row.

Here are some scores (I'll add the rest when I get my hands on them):

Round 1
Twin Springs def. Haysi
Gate City def. Thomas Walker
Honaker/Lebanon bye

Round 2
Lebanon def. Twin Springs
Honaker def. Gate City, 235-150

Round 3
Thomas Walker def. Haysi (Haysi Eliminated)
Gate City def. Twin Springs (Twin Springs Eliminated)

Round 4
Lebanon def. Honaker, 195-165
Gate City def. Thomas Walker (Thomas Walker Eliminated)

Round 5
Honaker def. Gate City, 220-100 (Gate City Eliminated)

Round 6 & Finals
Honaker def. Lebanon, 205-180
Honaker def. Lebanon, 195-145 (Lebanon High Eliminated)

Region IV Tournament (Roanoke, VA)

Round 1
Cave Spring 355 v. Richlands 70 (RR1 v. SW3)
Patrick County 140 v. Abingdon 165 (PD2 v. SW2)
Grundy 150 v. Christiansburg 290 (SW1 v. RR2)
Blacksburg 260 v. Tunstall 115 (RR3 v. PD1)

Round 2
Cave Spring 325 v. Abingdon 60
Christiansburg 210 v. Blacksburg 180
Richlands 120 v. Patrick County 210 [Richlands eliminated]
Grundy 230 v. Tunstall 170 [Tunstall eliminated]

Round 3
Cave Spring 265 v. Christianburg 160
Blacksburg 270 v. Patrick County 90 [Patrick County eliminated]
Grundy 210 v. Abingdon 195 [Abingdon eliminated]

Round 4
Blacksburg 250 - Grundy 155 [Grundy eliminated]

Round 5
Christiansburg 220 - Blacksburg 195 [Blacksburg eliminated]

Round 6
Cave Spring 330 - Christiansburg 140 [Christiansburg eliminated]

So the final order from Region IV will be: 1) Cave Spring, 2) Christiansburg, 3) Blacksburg and 4) Grundy. I must say after watching some of these rounds today that there were a lot of talented teams in the Region, which made for some great matches. Some of these matches, especially the ones between Christiansburg and Blacksburg were very close with a lot of lead changes. Very thrilling to watch! Anyway, thanks for all the teams and coaches who came out today to help make a rather successful and quick tournament today. Good luck to those teams who will be attending VHSL States later this month.

VHSL Group A Region B Tournament:

Central High School (Lunenbuerg)
George Mason High School
Gretna High School
Luray High School
Manassas Park High School
Randolph-Henry High School
Riverheads High School
William Campbell High School

George Mason took 1st, Manassas Park took 2nd, both are going to states.

Riverheads ended in 3rd, Luray in 4th. Beyond that, I'm not sure which 2 teams tied for 5th and which two tied for 7th

How has the difficulty been? Have you found errors?

If you have found specific errors, I'd love to see them. Since these questions are not cleared for discussion yet, please contact me privately with any examples.

It depends on who you ask, both Cave Springs and Charlottesville have had nice showings this year, I don't know who's coming strong out of Region III, I think both of the Region III teams went 0-2 last year.

Charlottesville is traditionally a AA powerhouse, but I have no idea what their team is like this year. New Kent and Cave Spring both could get a boost over less experienced teams from the higher difficulty. The double elimination makes it a bit harder to predict.

With the big day coming up this weekend, time to post my predictions. Feel free to add to the discussion and post your own.

A: Hard or nigh impossible to argue against George Mason. Though they've shown a little slip here and there (read: sub-300 point games; by that I mean in the neighborhood of 275-295) they'd have to have a pretty major collapse to not win the title again. Honaker does have potential to make a deep run again; I don't expect them to go out in 2. Radford's probably toughened up a bit, so I'd expect them to be in the running as well.
Honaker over Parry McCluer
Nandua over Manassas Park
George Mason over Mathews
Radford over Lebanon

AA: Cave Spring may have a close game or two, but I'm putting my money on them. The usual Charlottesville powerhouse is there, and from my understanding Harrisonburg is up-and-coming and pretty tough.
Cave Spring over Rockbridge County
Western Albemarle over Poquoson
New Kent over Charlottesville (who will work their way back through the loser's bracket, I'd guess)
Harrisonburg over Christiansburg

AAA: I think this is a TJ year. 'nuff said.
Albemarle over W.T. Woodson
Maggie Walker over Hickory
Henrico over Western Branch
TJ over Stonewall Jackson

Ok well if we are doing this I might as well join in the "fun."

A) George Mason is an actually really competent (2nd place at UMD's DR. YAKUB tournament in December with 45 powers) team playing in Group A. The tournament is most likely going to be a formality to test George Mason before we go ahead and crown them. After all, we have to see if they are indeed who we thought they are.

AA) This is the actually exciting division. I have seen strong performances out of New Kent, Poquoson, and Cave Spring all year long, and I know better than to count out Charlottesville. Any of those four would be a deserving and well-qualified state champion. I'll give the edge to Cave Spring winning a close final over New Kent.

AAA) Maggie Walker is going to win, and much like George Mason, it pretty much seems a foregone conclusion. Sorry TJ, try again next year once Tommy and JR are gone.
