VCU Fall Novice (11/13/2010)

Post by Cody »

This is the general announcement for the Virginia Commonwealth University mirror of this year's Fall Novice Tournament (FNT), which will be held in Richmond on Saturday, October 23, 2010. FNT is a low-difficulty event designed to introduce new players and teams to pyramidal quizbowl. For more information, please see the official FNT announcement thread.

FEES:
Base fee - $30 per team
Buzzer discount - $5 per buzzer (no limit)
Staffer discount - $5 per staffer (no limit)
Minimum fee - $0

To get a discount, buzzers must actually work for the purpose of a normal quizbowl game; that is, they must have eight working activators, a working control box, and either a working power cord or a fresh battery, as applicable. Don't waste everyone's time bringing broken buzzers to the tournament.

ELIGIBILITY:
This tournament is open to any player in their first or second year of high school quizbowl who has neither put up more than 30 points per game at a regular season event (this does not include VHSL Scholastic Bowl, Battle of the Brains or It's Academic) nor competed in a national tournament.

REGISTRATION:
To register, please e-mail Cody Voight at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers and staffers you plan to bring, along with an e-mail address where you can contacted with details. Posting here does not count as registering! The field is currently capped at 12 teams, so registration is first come, first serve.

LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS:
This tournament is being held on the 4th floor of Hibbs Hall on the Monroe Park Campus. The nominal address of Hibbs is 900 Park Avenue if you need something to put in your GPS, but be aware that Hibbs does not actually face the street, so you will have to park and then walk to the area where the building is in order to find it. I suggest printing out the appropriate campus maps and bringing them along--note that Hibbs is directly across from the Cabell Library, which will probably be easier for you to find if you have not been to the VCU campus before.

It is almost certain that the one and only door to Hibbs which will be unlocked for the weekend is the door on the west (interior) side of the vestibule that is on the library side of the building. We will endeavor to have signs up that point you to this door.

PARKING:
On Saturdays, parking on the street is free and available in most places around the campus; the best place to park for access to Hibbs is on one of the residential streets such as Park Avenue, Floyd Avenue, or West Avenue that branch off Harrison Street to the west near the Hibbs/library area. If you cannot find a space in that area, then you can try parking on Floyd Avenue near the Commons, or, further south, on Main Street. If all else fails, you should use the parking deck at Harrison and Broad, which is about three blocks north of the tournament building and will charge you somewhere between zero and five dollars to park all day on a Saturday.

TIMES:
Registration will run from 12:00 to 12:20 PM, with the goal of starting Round 1 as soon as possible after 12:30.

FORMAT:
Games will consist of 20 Tossups and 20 Bonuses. The team that answers a tossup correctly gets to collaborate on a bonus. Players have 5 seconds to answer after buzzing in and 5 seconds after a tossup or bonus is finished being read to answer. Tournament format will be determined by the number of teams present, but will be a round-robin followed by finals, unless one team clears the field by two games. If the top two teams are tied a one game final will occur. If a team is ahead of the closest competition by one game, those teams play a best of 3 series with the team ahead having a one game advantage (they need to win only one of two games to win the tournament). Each team is guaranteed 8 games.

No more than 4 players may play for a team at any given time, and no more than 6 may play for a team over the course of the day. A substitution opportunity will be provided at the halfway point of the game. A player may not move between a school's teams over the course of the day; that is, a player may only play for one team over the course of the tournament.

FREELANCE STAFFERS:
Contact me if you want to staff the tournament. Staff affiliated with teams not coming to this tournament can staff for a discount at a later tournament.

PAYMENT:
All teams must pay on Saturday morning in one of two forms: cash, or a personal or institutional check made out to "Quizbowl at VCU". Do not make checks out to any other person or entity besides "Quizbowl at VCU." If you need an invoice ahead of time so that your sponsor can cut a check, let me know.

This was announced kind of late. If it were announced earlier, i think we might have gone. As it is now, i doubt we can.

Sorry for the tardy response, your post slipped by me somehow.

Yes the tournament is happening. Currently there are three teams registered for it.

This has been postponed to 11/13 in the hope that teams can actually come to it. No other information has changed.

I'd like to bring my team to this tournament because I think it'll maximize our ability to learn, but one of our players doesn't meet the eligibility requirements. She's a junior, but the highest PPG I've been able to find for her is 26.67 at this year's Maryland Fall. Would you be willing to make an exception to the eligibility for this?

If necessary, I'll follow up with an e-mail when I'm at a location where my e-mail service isn't blocked.

Absolutely. If anyone has any questions about their player's eligibility, please e-mail me.

Thanks, Cody. Put us down for one team, one buzzer, and one moderator. I'll follow up with an actual entry e-mail when I can access my e-mail account.

As I was beginning to make travel plans, I made note of your rather unorthodox start time. While I'm aware you won't know the specifics of numbers of rounds and scheduling, can you give us a time estimate of when you're planning on completion of all games?

I can't see this running past 6.
