TJ Fall Novice Mirror (10/16/10)
TJ Fall Novice Mirror (10/16/10)
TJHSST will be hosting the NOEXIT (the Novice-Oriented EXcellent Invitational Tournament, a mirror of the Fall Novice Tournament), at TJ on Saturday, October 16. Players must be in their first or second year of high school quizbowl as a high school student to be eligible; any middle school experience will not be used to disqualify players.
The field will almost certainly be capped at 24 teams. To register, please sign up at http://activities.tjhsst.edu/quizbowl/tjiatreg.php.
The current plan for a 24-team field is four round-robin brackets of six followed by three playoff brackets of eight. Teams in the playoff brackets will play only the teams they didn't face in the prelims, for a total of 11 games + any tiebreakers. The final tournament format will be entirely dependent on the actual field size, though.
The base fee will be $45 per team, with a $5 discount for each working buzzer set and a $10 discount per competent staffer.
Checks should be made payable to TJHSST, with "Quizbowl tournament" in the subject line. We prefer checks be brought on the day of the tournament, but mailing in advance is fine.
Please email us at [email protected] with any questions.
Location:
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST)
6560 Braddock Road
Alexandria, VA 22312
Checks should be mailed in c/o Jean Stevens.
Registered (27):
C.D. Hylton

Longfellow (4)
Maggie Walker (2)
Maret (2)
Quince Orchard
RM (3)
St. Anselms (2)
St. Annes-Belfield

Re: TJ Fall Novice Mirror (10/16/10)
I find it a crying shame that Blake's tournament is being held the same day as this one. Is any special attempt being made to recruit those teams who would most benefit from this event but who will probably be sucked into another awesome speed tournament run by the esteemed coach Caulfield?
You can count on St. Anselm's to have some number of teams here, plus one staffer.

RM will most likely have at least one team, plus one staffer (me!)
And Aidan, I noticed the same thing. It's a crying shame.

Yeah, I mentioned this to Conor and he said he'd like to go but Caulfield's tourney is on the same day. I'll try talking to Caulfield, but he no longer has any reason to humor me whatsoever.

I'm trying to work out transportation so that QO can get at least 1 or 2 teams there. I have a bunch of true rookies (literally NO competition experience whatsoever) that I'd like to get into this tournament. And, meanwhile, i will send my players who don't qualify as novice to Blake. Bummer they're on the same weekend, but given that one is a novice tournament, no reason most teams can't do both!

I'm going to do my best to get 1-2 teams from WJ to skip Blake and come to this. Coach Safford seems fairly flexible about this.

The field for this is filling up quickly. We're going to try to expand the field to something more than 24, but we'd need more moderators and buzzers to make that happen. Any help in that area would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you haven't registered but are still interested, please let me know as soon as you can.

Registration will be from 8 to 9, in the cafeteria (not the auditorium, as has been the case in the past); there will be signs to direct you. There will be free breakfast (donuts, coffee, tea) during registration, and pizza for sale during lunch.wexs883198215 wrote:When will registration be?

Re: TJ Fall Novice Mirror (10/16/10)
I really loved reading this tournament, seeing some pretty good up-and-coming players and reading a great set. The highlight of my day (besides watching my team win) however was getting to meet Shantanu and Chris Manners' brother. It was pretty great.

Re: TJ Fall Novice Mirror (10/16/10)
I thought this tournament was very well run and provided some great experience for people who needed it. Thanks to TJ for putting it on.
I will say that I didn't think that the set's difficulty seemed as particularly well-controlled as last year. There were a number of questions I thought were too hard for the field (inlcuding one or two I wouldn't be comfortable with at even a regular-season event). Also, the degree of "noviceness" of the clues for difficulty-appopriate answer lines seemed to fluctuate wildly. For example, some lit questions would start out with a description and title-drop of an author's second- or third-most famous work (which is perfectly fine), while some would start out with a leadin that I thought would be pretty hard for even a normal HS event.
The set was still very good, however, and it was surely a great first taste of quizbowl for many people.

Also, Brian Potter is this year's David Cohen. It will be interesting to see if Marshall comes to much else this year. I hope they do.

On behalf of my team, I want to thank TJ for a well-run tournament; we enjoyed it! I also thought the questions were an excellent novice-level selection, so kudos to whoever authored them! I would appreciate it if you'd let us (coached who attended) know when this question set is "cleared" and available to participating teams (or posted online, or whatever)... thanks in advance.
