CATT VI - (12/11/2010) - Chattahoochee High School

Chattahoochee High School is pleased to announce the 6th Annual CATT (Chattahoochee Academic Team Tournament).

Like last year, the tournament will NOT feature split Junior Varsity and Varsity divisions. JV teams/players are, of course, still welcome to attend, but they will play on the same questions as the Varsity teams/players.

We will either mirror an existing set, or the questions will be house-written by former and current members of the CHS Academic Team. We will post that information as soon as a final decision has been made.

The tournament will be held on Saturday, December 11th, 2010 at Chattahoochee's campus in Johns Creek, GA (in the NE suburbs of Atlanta).

Each team will play 5-7 preliminary rounds of divisional pool play. Then, depending on the field size and the number of moderators we have available, there will be either a large (32-team+) single-elimination playoff, or a rebracketed round robin playoff to determine final placements.

Trophies will go to the top 4 teams.

The cost will be $60 for one team (+ $55 for your 2nd, $50 for your 3rd, or 4th, or 5th team = $165 for 3 teams, $215 for 4 teams, $265 for 5 teams.) You may enter up to 5 teams total.

If you are interested in attending or have any questions, please email me at [email protected].

EDIT: clarity

Now that Aaron has posted the pertinent information about the set, I am pleased to announce that Chattahoochee will be mirroring the BATE High School Tournament at the CATT VI this year. We are looking forward to another excellent iteration of the CATT! Thanks to all the writers who made this set happen.

I'm definitely looking forward to playing this set. Expect us there with at least one team (but hopefully more).

That is excellent to hear William. We are hoping for another strong field at the CATT, and Alpharetta's attendance certainly adds to that possibility. I will reserve y'all at least one spot in the field.

Thanks to all the readers and workers at the CATT VI today. And, of course, thanks to the 66 teams that came to the competition.

Congrats to Centennial for running the table to finish 11-0 and claim their first CATT title. Below are some brief results for the top 8. A more detailed SQBS report will be uploaded later.

1. Centennial - 11-0, 564.5 PPG, 23.8 PPB
2. Dorman A - 10-1, 516.4 PPG, 25.3 PPB
3. Alpharetta A - 10-1, 478.2 PPG, 23.7 PPB
4. Dorman B - 9-2, 392.7 PPG, 20.2 PPB
5. Walton - 9-1, 532 PPG, 22.4 PPB
6. Norcross A - 8-2, 381.2 PPG, 19.9 PPB
7. Danville A - 9-1, 363 PPG, 17.7 PPB

That is a lot of teams under 10ppb... what did you think about the difficulty of the set, Elliott?

I think the set overall was very good, particularly the tossups. The bonuses had a fairly wide range of difficulty, and many were definitely a little harder than "regular" difficulty. For the teams around metro ATL (and GA) that aren't very active on the circuit, there were many 0 or 10 point bonuses. I think for the good to very good teams at the CATT VI, the set did a good job of differentiating between them throughout the day. I would definitely recommend hearing this set if you get the chance.

Okay, cool. We'd definitely like to if we get a shot. Or at least, i'm looking forward to reading through and practicing on it later in the year.

This was a great set of well written questions, although definitely harder than "regular difficulty" level. I would imagine that quite a few teams felt a bit overwhelmed by the questions, but they were perfect for the more experienced teams in the field.

Ms. Hirsch made mention of Centennial's 560-110 defeat of Dorman A in the "On-Going Season Rankings" thread as evidence that Fred should rank Centennial higher than 90th. However, the lack of individual stats muddles the significance of that game. Was the Dorman A team at this tournament the "regular" Dorman A team, the "regular" Dorman B team, or some other arrangement?

Mr. Huff can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it was the "regular" Dorman A. The "regular" Dorman B finished 4th.

While the makeup of our A team has changed over the course of the year, this was in fact our "regular" A team. As someone who has seen many of the top teams play this year, I can say without question that Centennial is absolutely an elite team, capable of beating any team in the country, and Adam might be the best individual player I've seen.

Now that I have statistics for them, I can say that I certainly agree with such an analysis of them.

Mr. Rountree a quick edit to the Stats that could change a few teams standings: it is listed as Sonoraville A forfeiting to Norcross A in the round of 32. Norcross had a BYE round after OLA A told us they were leaving during that round.

Hernan, there were no BYEs in the playoffs. All 64 teams made the playoffs - only East Paulding, who had to leave at noon, and the CHS Freshmen, who were needed to help in the playoffs, did not play a round after lunch. However, a handful of teams (maybe 4-5) decided to leave after lunch rather than play another game (in the Round of 64). Unfortunately for Norcross, two of those teams (Archer and Sonoroville A) happened to be the teams you would have played in your first 2 playoff games. I am sorry for this; I hope it didn't ruin your experience. It was quite frustrating to go through the trouble of making sure every team had at least one more round to play (and to have the readers in the rooms) only to see some teams leave early, resulting in a few forfeited matches.

I was alright having two forteits, we played upper vs. underclassmen so it was a great playing experience, but in the round of 32 we had a forfeit against Ola A not Sonoraville. They're listed as going 1-6 that day which wouldn't be possible since the stats have them losing in the round of 64 to Starr's Mill B.
