Twenty-First Walton Academic Challenge

Post by Medelstein »

I am pleased to announce that the 21st Annual Walton Academic Challenge will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Walton High School in Marietta, Georgia.

Unlike the past two years, we will have questions written by current and former players this year. The questions will be balanced fairly between the social sciences, literature, natural sciences and a bit of math.

Invitations will be sent shortly to those coaches and schools for whom I have e-mail addresses. Also, the cost will be posted within the next week.

If you have any further questions or would like an invitation to this tournament (in case I do not have your e-mail), please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks and I hope to see you in early October.

The Walton Academic Bowl will consist of five preliminary round-robin rounds, and five playoff rounds, single-elimination.

The tossup distribution for the preliminary rounds will be:

4 - Natural Sciences
---1 - Biology
---1 - Physics
---1 - Chemistry
---1 - Astronomy/Earth/Computer/General
4 - Social Sciences/Studies
---1 - US History
---1 - World History
---1 - European History
---1 - Government//Geography/Social Sciences
4 - Language and Literature
---1.5 - American Literature
---1.5 - Western European Literature
---1 - World Literature
1 - Math
1.5 - Religion/Philosophy/Mythology
1.5 - Fine Arts

The tossup distribution for the playoff rounds will be:

5 - Natural Sciences
---1.25 - Biology
---1.25 - Physics
---1.25 - Chemistry
---1.25 - Astronomy/Earth/Computer/General
5.5 - Social Sciences/Studies
---1.25 - US History
---1.25 - World History
---1.25 - European History
---1.75 - Government//Geography/Social Sciences
4.5 - Language and Literature
---1.5 - American Literature
---1.5 - Western European Literature
---1.5 - World Literature
1 - Math
2 - Religion/Philosophy/Mythology
2 - Fine Arts

Note that when the amount of tossups relating to a particular subject is fractional, the actual number of tossups in any particular round will be one of the two integers closest to that fraction. For example, the number of american literature questions in Round 7 (a playoff) will be 1 or 2. The total number of literature questions in that round will be 4 or 5.

Regards to math questions, the tossups will be math theory, while the bonuses will be math computation (and will try to cover the different branches of math including algebra, number theory, combinatorics, geometry, and perhaps even calculus).

In both the prelims and the playoffs, the rounds will be divided into two halves. The first half of each round will consist of toss-ups accompanied by two-part related bonuses. The second half of each round will have tossupsaccompanied by three-part bonuses. In all cases, bonuses are bounce-back. There are no negs and no powers.

Central Gwinnett will be bringing at least one team and we may be able to bring two. I can let you know for sure after our practice on Wednesday.

Abubakar,

How many readers do you think you will need? I'll ask some people if they help at WAC.

Currently, we need all the readers we can get. Although teams get a discount for bringing readers, so far (last I checked), the only readers we have are Walton teachers.

Heh, sorry about that. I'll do my best to make sure you two are in contact as soon as possible. We still plan to take 2 teams and a buzzer system. Our registration form is probably bundled with the check which is moving from desk to desk somewhere in the Gwinnett County Public Schools office.

Yet another field update, because we have now reached 34 teams. DUE TO A SHORTAGE OF READERS (and teams willing to bring them), I WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT CUT OFF AT 36 TOTAL TEAMS and then begin a waiting list. In fact, we only have enough readers confirmed at this point for 28 teams to be playing anyway!!!

So, here is the field, to date:

Blessed Trinity (2)
Bleckley County (2)
Brookwood (3)
Campbell (1)
Cedar Shoals (3)
Central Gwinnett (2)
Chattahoochee (4)
Dorman (3)
Etowah (2)
Flowery Branch (1)
Lakeside (3)
Lovett (1)
Norcross (2)
North Cobb (1)
Ola (2)
Woodward Academy (2)

Again, due to a reader shortage, we will take the first 2 teams that contact me/send in their registration info and then we will start a waiting list.

Hey Matt,

we may have 4th team, but put us on the waiting list so other schools can come in first. If you hit your limit before getting to us, we'll stay at three. Thanks!

No Alpharetta or Centennial? That is a bit of a surprise. Hopefully, they will be able to make it in as they would certainly add to the field.

With two weeks to go until the 21st Annual Walton Academic Challenge. Here is the current field:

Blessed Trinity (2)
Bleckley County (2)
Brookwood (3)
Campbell (1)
Cedar Shoals (3)
Central Gwinnett (1)
Chattahoochee (4)
Dorman (3)
Eastside (1)
Etowah (2)
Flowery Branch (1)
Heritage (1)
Lakeside (3)
Lovett (1)
Norcross (2)
North Cobb (1)
Ola (2)
Woodward Academy (2)

At this point, due to an acute reader shortage, we can only take 1 more team to round out the field at 36 (unless more teams can bring readers) and then we will start a waiting list. I realize that the deadline was to be Wednesday 9/22, however, right now I only have enough readers for 28 teams. PLEASE, if you can bring an experienced reader, we need them to make the tournament run as planned!

Please note that Cobb County Schools will be closed for Fall Break from 9/18-9/26, so I will not be able to enter the school to check my mailbox until Monday 9/27. I will, however, check my e-mail when I can. So, if anybody wants in at this point, they have to e-mail me at [email protected].

Thankfully, we now have enough readers to support a field of 42 teams. So, with about 1 week to go, here is the current field...

Blessed Trinity Catholic HS (2)
Bleckley County High School (2)
Brookwood High School (3)
Campbell High School (1)
Cedar Shoals High School (3)
Centennial High School (1)
Central Gwinnett (1)
Chattahoochee High School (4)
Dorman High School (3)
Eastside (GA) High School (1)
Etowah High School (2)
Flowery Branch High School (1)
Heritage High School (1)
Lakeside High School (3)
Lovett School (1)
Mary Persons High School (2)
Norcross High School (2)
North Cobb High School (1)
Ola High School (2)
Roswell High School (1)
Woodward Academy (2)

According to my calculations, this makes 39 teams. We have room for 3 more. Of course, since we are on break this week and I cannot get into the school, the three slots may already be filled by teams who have sent in their registration forms yet have not notified me via e-mail or the board. So, I will make my next (and hopefully last) field update on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Coaches of already-registered teams, I will send out a confirmation e-mail with additional info. So, stay tuned...

Anything from Westminster? My coach said he sent in our forms and checks a while ago...and we're planning on bringing a reader, so hopefully everything works out.

North Cobb High School (1)
North Gwinnett High School (1)
Ola High School (2)
Roswell High School (1)

Waiting List:
Westminster A
Westminster B
Westminster C
(I got a check and nothing else from Westminster (i.e. registration form with contact info!) and since I had to put them on the waiting list, I had to send the check back! If there are openings, Westminster teams are first in line but, you will need to get me registration form and the appropriate amount for entry fee(s))

I am going to send a confirmation e-mail to the coaches of the teams in the field today or tomorrow, so please watch for that. Unless there are any changes, this will be the last field update.

...thanks. I've let my coach know and hopefully we can sort this out soon. Turns out I spoke too soon about bringing a reader (which is still up in the air). And actually, we were going to cancel our C team anyways so I guess there's only two teams on the wait list now, both of which are still Westminster

I want to thank all of the participants, readers, and student & parent volunteers for their hard work.

First, I want to congratulate Dorman on their Championship after the day kinda got off on the wrong foot for them. It was a well-played Finals by both teams; we look forward to many more.

Second, thanks to Mr. Edelstein and the whole Walton staff for making this tournament so enjoyable. It ran smoothly and the questions were very good in my opinion; one of the better house-writes a GA team has produced over the past few years. Well done indeed!

Wow. Thanks a lot Mr. Rountree! A compliment like that coming from a coach and program of your caliber means quite a lot and justifies all of the hard work that the kids and I put into making it happen. Looking forward to coming to your place in 2 weeks for Fall Taste of GATA.

Mr. Edelstein:

Is there any chance that we could get a copy of the questions used in the playoff rounds? I would really like to use these rounds at practice to review what we missed. (Plus we never heard the semifinals or finals so those would be useful for practice, as well.)

Thanks for running an excellent tournament yesterday!

Thanks for coming, Ms. Hirsch!

Unfortunately, when we house write, we never give out the playoff rounds. The only time that we do that is when we use NAQT questions.
