TRASHTASTROPHE @ Loyola Ultima (10/17/09)

Post by Dan-Don » Mon Aug 31, 2009 11:44 pm

Do you think you have what it takes to claim the title of “Trashiest Team in Illinois”? Then prove it at TRASHTASTROPHE 2009!

WHAT?
Trashtastrophe is a high school tournament that features questions from one subject only—trash (pop culture)!

WHEN?
Trashtastrophe will be played on October 17th at Loyola Academy immediately following the conclusion of Loyola’s Ultima Varsity Tournament.

HOW DO I PLAY?
Each round is played between 2 teams of 2 players each. 20 tossups, no bonuses. Sudden death tiebreakers. Negs and blind, 15-point powers are in effect. The field size is limited to 32 teams, and all teams will have the chance to play all 10 rounds, even if it’s just for exhibition.

I’M NOT VERY GOOD AT TRASH. WHAT ARE THE QUESTIONS LIKE?
Each round consists of tossups distributed as follows:

• 6 Movies & TV
• 4 Music
• 3 Sports
• 3 Video Games
• 3 Miscellaneous
• 1 Trash Literature

The tossups are pyramidal and very accessible—everyone will be able to answer these questions. All the questions were written by Dan Donohue and Jeff Geringer. They average 6 lines in length.

ALL RIGHT! HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Form your team of two and email your roster and team name to Dan Donohue (dandonohue91@aol.com). The entrance fee is $20 per team. Mail your check to the attention of David Riley of Loyola Academy. WE ARE STILL ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS.

WAIT! DO I GET TO EAT DINNER?
Yes. Your entrance fee includes the cost of dinner which will be ordered from Lou Malnati’s, Jimmy John’s, or Corner Bakery. There will be a dinner break after the fifth round.

Lots of fabulous prizes for winners! Hoping to see you on the 17th!

Sincerely,

The Garbagemen:

Moved this to the Trash forum, since it is a trash event.

But it's a highschool trash event. No highschoolers would look for it/see it here.

The success of this tournament could determine how many events a very hard-working, unfunded quiz bowl team will be able to attend this year. Finding a good mirror could take some serious financial stress off of the players. I doubt that most potential mirror schools would be browsing the college part of this board.

Side note: I can release some extra/sample questions to potential mirror candidates. All requests can be made to Dan at (curiouscamper(AT)aol.com) or myself at (geringe1(AT)illinois.edu).

If you haven't already, you should probably just add an addendum to the announcement for the main tournament.

Actually the mirror potential for this tournament is probably much greater amongst college audiences. Maryland would probably be willing to run this as a side event at some point, for example, and I'm sure other places would be much more interested. Of course, that's as an open event, not as the bizarre high school only trash event.

The problem with this is that the college circuit would kill this set. I have seen a round of this, and I would have powered 6 or 7 questions. After seeing how good many of you were during CO Trash, I am convinced that this tournament would literally see 20 powers per round if it were used in a college tournament. It is a solid pyramidial set on the easy end for high schoolers. For college students, it would lead to dozens of buzzer races on the first line.

Yeah, it's designed for 95%+ conversion from solo/double teams. While there are more difficult questions (playoff rounds), any player who says "I've never heard of that" more than three times in a round probably hasn't turned on the TV or played a video game in the last decade (I say decade because Dan and I have strove to keep the vast majority of questions in the modern era).

Bumping this with a field update:

Culver 1 (called "Butterburgers" until I think of a better name)
Culver 2 ("Frozen Custard")
Culver 3 ("Concrete Mixer")
Culver 4 ("insert Culver's Menu Item Here")
Culver 5 ("Not Craig T. Nelson") will consist of Coach Phil Blessman.
Fenton 1 ("I Can't Believe It's Not Blake Tutt!") will consist of Blake Tutt and Mike Penicnak.
Ignatius 1 ("Hopelessly Deveau-ted to You") will consist of Andrew Deveau and friend (so I think I've been told).
Ignatius 2 will consist of some people (so I've been told).
Loyola 1 ("Youkhna Handle the Truth") will consist of Nolan Winkler and Marcel Youkhna
Loyola 2 ("Father of the McBride") will consist of Matt McBride and Patrick Rahlfs
Loyola 3 ("V for Venkus") will consist of Joe Burke and Morgan Venkus.
Stevenson 1 ("Savin Private Malis") will consist of Kevin Malis and Mark Savin.
New Trier 1 ("You Got Server-ed") will consist of Steve Server and John Cook
New Trier 2 ("Lost in Translation") will consist of Akhil Vohra and Aahlad Vadrevu.
Viator 1 ("Happy Gilmore") will consist of Ryan Gilmore and Jack Nuelle.
Viator 2 ("Z-Factor") will consist of Eddie Zahrebelski and friend

If you want to play, there is still plenty of time to register. Just send an email to me (dandonohue91@aol.com). Do the same if you want to host a mirror.

Just a reminder: THESE SETS ARE NOT CLEARED FOR DISCUSSION. We still want to host mirrors (email me: dandononohue91@aol.com) and there is the possibility that TrashTWOstrophe could be on its way sooner than you think.

Anyways, Happy Gilmore won the tournament (Ryan Gilmore and Jack Nuelle of Viator). They took home a 5 liter trash can filled with 4 pounds of candy. Second place was Army of Two (Andrew Deveau and Brian somebody from Ignatius). I don't remember who took 3rd through 5th or the top scorer. Top negger was Jack Nuelle of Viator who took home TOSS-UP: The Addictively Dicey Dice Game! All teams took home some crappy DVDs and CDs that Jeff and I didn't want anymore. The winners also took home Trashtastrophe: The Official Soundtrack. I don't know if stats will be up. (I believe Jonah took them on his flash drive though--we'll see.)

Aww...we should've posted them anyway.

And I can't reveal the soundtrack because it consists of things that were tossed up.

Trashtwostrophe is being combined with Trashtastrophe at a minimum of two sites. I am giving both Arcadia, CA and Bettendorf, IA access to both sets, so both sets will be wastebinned after the UIUC Mirror.

EDIT: I have sent the first two rounds of Trashtastrophe to a few potential mirrors so those will most likely not be played again.
