Let's Remember Some Guys IV: 9/11 at 8pm central

Post by theMoMA »

Let's remember some guys again!

What is a "guy"?

Each tossup will be on a single athlete. The "guys" somewhat memorable, but not particularly dominant or otherwise notable. The main criterion is whether, after hearing the tossup, the players will go "oh, yeah, I remember that guy." (It might help to pick guys you actually remember.) Anyone too obscure for that isn't a guy. Anyone whose existence you don't need to be reminded of isn't a guy. Some examples of guys: Rick Ankiel, Smush Parker, Jason Campbell, and Anthony Kim. Examples of not guys: Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady, and Roger Federer.

There are plenty of examples in the packet archive for you to look at.

When did "guys" play?

Because we're actually trying to remember guys, try not to pick players whose careers ended before 1998 or so, or players whose careers are still in progress, although there is some leeway here. If you want to include some historical guys in your "other" category, that's fine, but the main MLB/NBA/NFL tossups should be on guys who retired sometime between 1998 and 2020 (or who are functionally retired).

How should tossups look?

The tossups should be no shorter than 4.5 lines and no longer than 6 (1" margins, 10-point Times New Roman). Clues should focus on memorable career events or off-the-field incidents. Particularly helpful clues--for instance, clues about interactions with teammates, trades, etc.--will provide useful context about the teams a player was on or the years in which they played. Try to keep the clues interesting and not almanacky.

What's the distribution?

Same as ever:

3 MLB
3 NBA
3 NFL
3 "other" (NHL, college sports, tennis, golf, soccer, Olympics, WNBA, historical guys, etc.)

Note that, in this context, "guy" is a gender-neutral term.

Is there any cost to this?

No, but the true cost is in not remembering. So if you're planning to play, you should try to write a packet. Writing longer or multiple packets is encouraged.

When should I be done with my many excellent packets?

Early September. Contact me at [email protected] if you're planning to write but don't think you'll be there to read.

When will this tournament take place? Be specific.

Via Zoom on Labor Day weekend or the weekend after. We'll push it to the next weekend if the holiday means that a significant number of interested players can't attend.

Is this tournament an official function of NAQT or the NAQT national championship, or is it sponsored, endorsed, or organized by NAQT?

No.

Based on the survey responses, it appears that the best date as of now is Saturday, September 4.

I will leave open the survey through this weekend, so if the 4th doesn't work for you and you want your feelings known, please fill it out: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... Q/viewform

Based on the latest slate of responses, the best date is pretty clearly September 11. Tejas has said he's unsure if he can make it, so if you can exert any social pressure on him to clear his 9/11 schedule for remembrance, that would be good.

We will begin gathering on Zoom at 7:30pm central on 9/11 and begin reading by 8pm or whenever we have a critical mass of people.

If you're planning to read questions tomorrow for Guys, please fill out some basic info on this sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

(If you don't sign up, no worries; everyone will have a chance to read. This will just help us coordinate a little faster.)

On the 20th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, we remembered some guys. Across 174 tossups, we saw both the joy of remembrance and the agony of forgetting. An astounding 154 of 174 guys (89%) were remembered, but the remaining 11% remind us that we must do more.

The Patriot Day edition of remembering guys crowned a new champion, Jonathan Mishory, whose 26 total guys remembered and 1.49 PPG (points per guy) both narrowly paced the field. Familiar names scored plenty of points as well, and a full accounting is given below. Thank you to the writers and players for remembering.

PPG Player
1.49 Jonathan Mishory
1.46 Andrew Hart
1.36 Naveed Chowdhury
1.05 Tejas Raje
0.94 Evan Knox
0.74 Ryan Rosenberg
0.69 David Seal
0.52 Dylan Minarik
0.33 Rob Carson
0.25 Evan Nagler
0.24 Sam Rombro
0.23 Pat Freeburn
0.17 Delano Barnes
0.07 Ani Perumalla
0.07 Blake Andert
0.06 Jack Lamberti
0.06 Eric Chen

Several others joined us without scoring points; their names are withheld to protect their innocence.
