Let's Remember Some Guys III: Let's Remember Yet More Guys

Post by theMoMA »

Let's remember some more guys.

What is a "guy"?

Each tossup will be on a single athlete. The key is that the athletes must be in the vein of Deadspin's "guys": somewhat memorable, but not particularly dominant or otherwise notable. The main criterion is whether, after hearing the tossup, the players will go "oh, yeah, I remember that guy." (It might help to pick guys you actually remember.) Anyone too obscure for that isn't a guy. Anyone whose existence you don't need to be reminded of isn't a guy. Some examples of guys: Rick Ankiel, Smush Parker, Jason Campbell, and Anthony Kim. Examples of not guys: Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady, and Roger Federer.

Check out last year's packets for examples of how this tournament looks.

When did "guys" play?

Because we're actually trying to remember guys, try not to pick players whose careers ended before 1998 or so, or players whose careers are still in progress, although there is some leeway here. If you want to include some historical guys in your "other" category, that's fine, but the main MLB/NBA/NFL tossups should be on guys who retired sometime between 1998 and 2020 (or who are functionally retired).

How should tossups look?

The tossups should be no shorter than 4.5 lines and no longer than 6 (1" margins, 10-point Times New Roman). Clues should focus on memorable career events or off-the-field incidents. Particularly helpful clues--for instance, clues about interactions with teammates, trades, etc.--will provide useful context about the teams a player was on or the years in which they played. Try to keep the clues interesting and not almanacky.

What's the distribution?

Same as ever:

3 MLB
3 NBA
3 NFL
3 "other" (NHL, college sports, tennis, golf, soccer, Olympics, WNBA, historical guys, etc.)

Note that some of your guys can, in fact, be ladies.

Is there any cost to this?

No, but the true cost is in not remembering. So if you're planning to play, you should try to write a packet. Writing longer or multiple packets is encouraged.

When should I be done with my many excellent packets?

We will again be remembering guys at HSNCT, but we'll make the packets available (no charge) to people who want to play at NSC or elsewhere. If you won't be at HSNCT but are still planning to write a packet, email packets to [email protected] when you're done. If you'll be there, you can read your packet off your own device and send it to me after so I can make sure all of the guys are in the archive where they can be remembered.

When will this tournament take place? Be specific.

Almost certainly late night on HSNCT Saturday, after other side events have concluded. More details will follow as HSNCT nears.

Is this tournament an official function of NAQT or the NAQT national championship, or is it sponsored, endorsed, or organized by NAQT?

No.

I'll keep everyone interested in remembering guys updated on what we're planning to do. My preference is not to schedule the event online unless and until we know for sure that HSNCT will not be rescheduled for a later date. (The email canceling HSNCT says that NAQT would like to reschedule the event but cannot announce anything now.)

I fear an online tournament will not simulate the full experience which requires starting at like 10:30 PM, running past midnight, be played by people who have been up all day, and at some point features a bumbling Cory Haala buzzing while drunk.

In honor of the canceled HSNCT weekend, I'd like to propose a "remembering guys" online event to take place via Zoom on Saturday, May 23, at around 9:30pm central. There will be no cost, and writing a packet is not required to participate, but come on, what else do you have to do?

Anyone found to be cheating will be forced to watch the next 81 New York Mets home games as penance.

If you are interested, please fill out this form. There are questions on there about date/time, if you have concerns about the tentative plan.

It has come to my attention that May 23 is the beginning of Eid, and that May 24 would be better. Thus, I am changing the tentative date to 9:30pm on Sunday, May 24 (the day before Memorial Day, fittingly enough).

If you've already answered that May 23 is good for you, but May 24 is now not good, please let me know via email.

We've got at least 9 people who are going to be remembering guys a week from today (at 9:30pm central). So far, everyone says they're writing a packet, so we should have around 120 tossups to play, if not a few more from later sign-ups.

Speaking of which, if you're interested in remembering guys but haven't done so yet, please fill out this google form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link

I'll post the Zoom info in this thread on Sunday night before we begin.

The remembrance is nearly upon us. If you are planning to write a packet but cannot join us to read it, or would prefer someone else read in your stead, please send me an email before the Zoom call begins; there's a gracious offer to read if anyone needs or wants it.

I will email everyone who filled out the form with the Zoom link and password around 9pm central. I'll also post the link here when it's available, but you'll need to email me for the password ([email protected]).

One hour into Memorial Day, I am pleased to report that we collectively remembered 128 of the 169 guys tossed up at Guys III.

Naveed usurped Tejas's throne to reign supreme as guy rememberer. The standings by PPG (points per guy) are:

Naveed Chowdhury: 1.26
Tejas Raje: 1.11
Ryan Rosenberg: 0.76
Andrew Hart: 0.76
David Seal: 0.64
Dan Galitsky: 0.57
Ben Koppel: 0.56
Evan Nagler: 0.50
Sam Rombro: 0.38
Jarret Greene: 0.38
Jonathan Magin: 0.36
Carsten Gehring: 0.36
Dylan Minarik: 0.32
Alex Sankaran: 0.18
Jack Lamberti: 0.18
Chris Manners: 0.18
Rohin Devanathan: 0.18
Cory Haala: 0.13
Eric Chen: 0.06
Anthony Delgado: 0.06
Leo Law: 0.00
Andrew Wang: 0.00

Naveed also narrowly won by total guys remembered, 18 to Tejas's 17.

The question set is available here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/questionsets/2491/

Thanks for playing, and thanks for remembering.
