I am proud to announce FIGHT THE POWER!

This tournament is inspired by Ryan Dillon's tournament from three years ago:

http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... op+doubles

The distribution will be as such:

5 2011-Present
5 2000-2010
5 1990-1999
3 pre-1990 (Sorry Kurtis Blow fans)
2 Hip-Hop Grab Bag/history/culture/current events

Questions are not guaranteed to fit squarely into one time period, and there will be 20 Tossups every round (no bonuses). There will be SUPER POWERS, Powers, and regular 10s. All tossups will be between 8-11 lines long, and there will be 7 packets (possibly more).

Update 8/21: The editing team is now set, thank you to all those that offered help! I will be working with Kai Smith, with help from Aseem Keyal and Jason Cheng. Also please notice the distribution has been updated! A question has been taken away from the '80s column and put into the 2011-Present column.

Update 8/30: This set is now 50% done, and will definitely be completed by late September at the latest. Those interested in hosting the set can contact me at [email protected]. Also, stay tuned for details about an HSNCT site!

Update 5/6: This set will be run at HSNCT. Sign-up sheet is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

Update 5/16: The field is now full, but a waitlist is now up. We are looking for one or two more mods still! The tournament will start around 9 PM the Saturday of HSNCT.

Update 5/27: The field is set--apologies to the remaining free agents. I'd be glad to send the set out, however! The staffing team will be Eddie Kim,
Niki Peters, Erik Owen, and Jakob Myers. Thanks for all who offered to help! The tournament will take place at 9 PM Saturday--stay tuned for the location.

Update 5/28: this tournament will be in the rooms M101-5 at 9 PM!! On the Marquis level, near the Imperial Ballroom.

Edit:we are in M105

If this doesn't happen somewhere I can play it, that should be against, the law.

An update: This set is now officially ready for mirroring! 3 rounds of it were played at the Yale mirror of Penn Bowl today, and stats will be posted shortly.

This was awesome! Lots of super cool/fun answerlines. The only thing I would change was to have more questions on 2000-2011 and less on pre 1999, other than that I loved it.

Are there any current plans for this tournament to be mirrored at HSNCT?

Hi all,

Sorry for the late response--but now I am confirmed for HSNCT and this tournament is confirmed as well! The current plan is doubles with a cap of 8 teams, which may increase if the # of staffers allows. It will be ran on the night of the 27th, most likely.

Sign-up sheet is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

I played this at the Canadian mirror this weekend. It was a very enjoyable tournament! Thanks for writing it!

I agree with Aaron, this tournament was well-written and very fun. I am considering producing a rock music tournament similar to this because I liked the format so much.

Apologies for making the sign-up doc read-only--it should be editable now.

I'm a free agent for this. Don't expect me to get anything pre-2000, but I should be solid at the newer stuff.

I plan to play this. I'll mostly contribute newer stuff and some 90s West Coast.

I would very much like to play this. Strictly 90s with an East Coast emphasis.

Sounds like a ton of fun. I'll plan to play at HSNCT.

I'm 100% going to play at HSNCT this sounds awesome! I can handle post-2000 well (especially post 2011) but am probably not entirely useless on pre-2000.

For those making plans on Saturday: This will run after Eddie Kim's João tournament, so it will probably start around 8:30 or 9, unless people can only make it earlier. The whole tournament will run ~2 hours.

Just realized I registered for this as team 9/10.. any possibility of this expanding past 8 teams?

As one of the people languishing in the Free Agents section, what are the chances this gets opened up more aka more teams?

Leaving room for 1 free agent team, the field is now full. We are still looking for one or two more moderators to expand the field size!

Where is the meeting place?

This tournament will take place at 9, in the same 4 rooms that João is running in. I will update this post with the room #s when they are available.

The format will be a prelim of 5 (possibly 6) rounds, with 4 teams in each room. After the prelims, the top 4 teams will advance into a final.

EDIT: We have rooms!! See first post for details.

Hey, this tournament definitely didn't play to my strengths, but it was a fun tournament and I enjoyed playing it. Thanks for putting it together!

Apologies for the stats for this being bad; my laptop had broken the night before. Column addition and/or handwriting parsing errors may have resulted.

This was ridiculously fun- thanks to all of the writers and staffers who made this possible. Will stats/packets for this be posted soon?

I have the stat sheets in my backpack, and will be working my way though them the next two weeks or so. As for the packets, after some editing they should also be up ~1-2 Weeks. Thanks everybody for playing!

Hi guys, sorry for the lack of updates. I'm working in China now so won't be able to make the 2018 HSNCT, but would encourage anyone interested to write a new hip-hop set! I'd be more than happy to add a few questions.

Stats were presumed lost, but I recently found them in an old folder. I'll try to upload them when I have spare time. Some stat sheets went missing or might look funny (ahem, team-that-shall-not-be-named that negged twenty times in a row), but they should be for the most part accurate. SQBS only allows for a max of 3 teams per game, so the team with the lowest score won't be entered. If anybody has a better solution, please let me know
