Gladiator Open [MS-14], 3/28/15 in Elm Grove, WI

Post by MichaelFalk »

Dear coaches, players, and interested others,

St. Mary's Visitation School in Elm Grove, WI is inviting you to the fifth annual Gladiator Open, to be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015, in picturesque Elm Grove, WI. This is an open junior high (up to grade 8) quiz bowl tournament to be played on NAQT'S MS-14 question set. As such, it is a qualifier for MSNCT 2015.

At Gladiator Open, you will hear at least 7 rounds of pyramidal tossups and three-part bonuses played according to NAQT rules, with the exception that rounds will be untimed. By NAQT rules, teams will be allowed four players at a time (plus substitutes) and bonuses will not bounce back.

The entry fee is $65 per team, with a $10 discount for each buzzer system you bring and a $10 discount for your 2nd and subsequent team. Please arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 AM. A brief rules meeting will take place at 8:30, and play will begin at 8:45. We will break for lunch around noon.

I am preliminarily capping the field at 16 teams, for space and staffing reasons. If there is interest in expanding the field, I will take a waitlist and work on addressing the concerns.

SMV is located near a rather large interchange reconstruction, but is still easily accessible from I-94, 15 minutes from downtown Milwaukee and 90 minutes from the Chicago Loop. If you'd like to register your team, please email at mfalk at stmaryeg dot org.

I will moderate again (unless Barrington High School makes it to state).

Are there any discounts if a staffer comes for the school? Just asking, because I didn't see the info in your post.

Hi Peter,

Sorry I haven't been checking here. Yes, I would happily negotiate a moderator discount, but as of right now Station is not planning on attending the tournament. If that changes, we would love to have you ride along.

Here's the field update for Gladiator Open 2015:

Quest Academy (3 teams)
Bayside Middle School (2)
Classical Consortium (1)
Keith Country Day School (2)
St. Mary's Visitation (n)

Interested? I can take a few more teams.

And finally...

We wrapped up the final round at about 2:30, finished the individual shootout at 2:45, and I think every team was on the road by 3:00. Thanks to all of the players, coaches, and volunteers who made this tournament run smoothly.

I myself moderated some impressively close games today, including Bayside A leading by 5 points after 19 en route to a last tossup, 40 point win over Quest B; Keith Blue trailing by 15 points after 19 but then pulling out a last tossup, 5 point win over Quest B; and SMV Cougar going to overtime against Classical Consortium before pulling out a 5 point win. I also had the pleasure of moderating the first place game, wherein Bayside A took a 115 to -5 lead over Quest A, who called a timeout, gathered themselves, and then scored 15 of the next 16 tossups.

I owe a debt of gratitude to:

Donny Parey, Alana Parey, Allen Witkowski Jr., Allen Witkowski III, Lex Witkowski, James Kearney, Nicky Ragonese, and Aidan Parks, for spending their Saturday volunteering;

Peter Rauh, Tim Rauh, and Keegan Mihm, for helping with both setup and teardown;

Beth Parey, for doing an often imitated, never duplicated, superlative job on statistics for the ninth consecutive tournament;

the coaches and players of Keith Country Day School, Classical Consortium, Bayside High School, and Quest Academy, for driving to Elm Grove, WI and spending the day at our tournament;

and Kylie Daemmrich and Burke Seeberg, my co-coaches, for all of the good they do with our teams and our tournaments.

With many thanks,
