***Edit (1/20/20): We are suspending MAGIC indefinitely, until we have more writers and subject editors. It will likely be brought back later, in 2021.

MAGIC (Mira Loma and Gnana Invitational Competition) is a housewritten, “regular level,” set for high schoolers. Current writers for this sets are from Mira Loma, Folsom, and Churchill. We hope to release our set in the Fall/Winter of 2020, potentially for mirrors as well if people show interest.

Subject editors will be paid (50% of money from potential mirrors)/(number of subject editors). Head editor will be paid at least 15% - 20% of total income earned.

Currently, Conor Thompson is editing Math and Geography. We are looking for a Head Editor and subject editors for the following subjects:

History
Literature
Science
Religion/Mythology/Philosophy/Social Science
Current Events
Trash

The current distribution is below:

4/4 History (1/1 European, 1/1 American, 1/1 World, 1/1 Ancient/Other)
4/4 Literature (1/1 American, 1/1 European, 1/1 British, 1/1 World/Ancient )
4/4 Science (1/1 Physics, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Biology, 0.5/0.5 Math, 0.5/0.5 Other)
3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 Visual, 1/1 Auditory, 1/1 Other)
1/1 Geography
3/3 Religion, Mythology, Social Science, Philosophy (1/1 Religion, 1/1 Mythology, 1/1 Philosophy + SS)
1/1 Trash + Current Events (0.5/0.5 Trash, 0.5/0.5 Current Events)

*Math tossups and bonuses are non-computational.

There will also be 1 tiebreaker (in a non-trash subject) for each round.

For the purposes of this tournament:
Other art will contain architecture, dance, theater and film. Visual art will contain paintings, drawings and sculptures. Auditory art will primarily be music.

We have removed the dedicated military portion of the distribution. Military history will still be present throughout the set but will be placed in its respective category.
We have reduced Geography to 1/1, as there is little focus on it in most high schools.
We have increased religion and mythology each to be 1/1 to be more inline with other sets.

If anyone is willing to edit our set, please contact [email protected]. Please do not contact [email protected] (it has been taken over by a rogue operator).

That and why the massive imbalance between World and US Geography?
Also - what does 1/1 military entail?

I second Ameya's confusion; does this mean that the American, European, and World history subcategories will not include any military content? Also, is there a rationale behind the very small philosophy/social science distribution?

They're a new user, so when they make new posts or edit old posts, the post has to be approved before it is publicly visible. They probably edited the original post and it's awaiting reapproval.

Quietly tweaking your posted distribution does nothing to assuage our concerns, and if anything makes me more worried about the choices behind this set potentially being arbitrary and unjustified. Can you please be more clear about the reasoning behind the distribution for this set?

I don't mean to defend any of the other decisions being made in this distribution, but 1/1 combined Philosophy+SS is almost certainly a good upper bound for regular difficulty HS sets and is present in nearly every, if not absolutely every, such set announced for this year.

Assuming my memory is correct the P+SS distribution was 0.5/0.5 combined when Danny made his post (i.e. pre-edit).

Hi everyone, we are still tweaking the distro. Sorry for the confusion as we are all new to making a set. If you guys have suggestions you can reply here.

I hate to be that guy, but I would encourage you to branch out and see if you can collaborate with some more experienced writers, or a set that already has an editing team in place, in more of a secondary writing role than a primary writing role. The worst thing that can possibly happen here is you don't get an adequate editing team and produce a low-quality set that a) isn't played or b) is played and gives people a bad experience, and it's much better to start small and get some experience before producing your own set.
